Iconic Hairstyles Through The Years

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Hairstyles have been making waves throughout the history of the world.

However some of the most iconic hairstyles still in rotation in 2010 includes the following:

1.  The Bob – A very popular short haircut from the 1920s, the Bob hairstyle often linked to actress Louise Brooks, was considered extremely controversial for the times.  It created quite an uproar in the hair fashion world and many consider it to be one of the most iconic hairstyles of any period in American culture.

Although The Bob has ebbed and flowed in popularity over the years and morphed into a range of modified shapes, it is still a popular hairstyle close to 100 years later.  Now that’s hair staying power.

2.  Super short geometric haircut – The 60s issued in the era of Twiggy and her uber short haircut.  The supermodel’s super short cut has also been modified through the years and been reborn as The Crop and The Chop, to name just a few of the new names attached to versions of the Twiggy do.

3.  The flip – Another popular haircut which won fame in the the 60s was the flip worn by Sally Field in her role as teen queen Gidget.  You may know Sally as the mother on ABC’s popular Brothers And Sisters but back in the day she was rocking an iconic shoulder length flip hairdo which was all the rage at the time. Secrets About Janine Jarman Of Shear Genius 3 (SG3)

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

If you’re a Shear Genius 3 fan you’ve watched Janine Jarman for the past nine weeks cutting, coloring, blow drying, brushing, curling, pinning, extending strands and turning out spectacular hairstyles in a very limited amount of time.

Who will ever forget her first Elimination Win in Week One when her stunning blonde Nymph from the sea floated down the runway strutting her gorgeous cloud of blonde tresses.  It was a WOW moment.

Male Hair Extension Victory Plus Bob Success

Janine also completely transformed a frumpy man into a hunk using HairUWear hair extensions.  The bubbly competitor also created a picture perfect bob on a model with naturally curly hair.   Of course Janine has had a few misses, but for the most part she has come in either as doing Shear Genius work or being a close second.  Her performance on the reality TV show has been stupendous.

Get To Know The Real Janine

While you might think you know Janine from her Shear Genius 3 performances, you may surprised with the real Janine.  I have known Janine since she opened her fabulous Hairroin Salon (www.hairroinsalon.com) located at 1553 North Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles, California (90028-7312 –  Phone (323) 467-0392).

I’ve had the great fortune to visit Janine at Hairroin which is by far one of the coolest salons in Hollywood. (more…)

Sassoon Son Building Hair Business Of His Own

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Elan Sassoon is creating an empire of his own in the Boston and New York areas.  Although he is originally from sunny California, he is now living the cold of the Northeast.

The son of the legendary hair stylist, Vidal Sassoon, has been working on creating The Academy for Hair and Skin by Elan Sassoon since 2008.  It is scheduled to open soon.

The academy is a $22 million school near the Boston University campus on Commonwealth Avenue.  The academy is a 90,000-square-foot facility with dormitories, the first of its kind in the country and the largest. It offers training from international stylists in everything from hair history to hair etiquette.

More are eventually planned to be opened around the country.

Elan also partnered with Lord’s & Lady’s Hair Salon founder Michael Barsamian to open a 3,000-square-foot high-end salon, Mizu, next to L’Espalier restaurant at the new luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel and condominium complex on Boylston Street.  Another Mizu is planned for New York on Park Avenue.  At Mizu which in Japanese means “water” the haircuts and coloring services start at $125.

Elan’s also partnered for a line of spas called Green Tangerine.  The two partners have launched two new spa and salon businesses, Green Tangerine at Patriot Place in Foxborough and Legacy Place in Dedham. (more…)

Marsha Hunt Iconic “Natural” Curly Haired Celebrity

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Marsha Hunt is famous for many of her accomplishment including becoming an icon for the natural curly haired style which back at the time she wore it was known as a “natural” or a “Fro.

The lovely Marsha Hunt was born April 15, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania renowned as the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the American Flag.

(Image of Marsha Hunt as it appeared on her book “Undefeated” – Amazon.com – All Rights Reserved)

The family emphasis was on academics and taking advantage of the opportunities opening up for Negroes in the 1950s. Her mother, her primary parent, was a librarian, and her father, educated at Harvard was one of America’s first Negro psychiatrists.

Marsha was an academic star, but she was also under the spell of another powerful influence. To youngsters in that decade, Philly was the pop music mecca of America, the home of ‘American Bandstand’.  Kids in that city lived and breathed music. Marsha was no exception. She loved to dance.

Marsha studied at the University of California, Berkeley (at the time of the student riots).

In the late 1960s she moved to Britain.   She was 19 and found herself penniless in London, the new music and fashion mecca: home of the Beatles, the Animals, Donovan, Gerry and the Pace Makers, Herman’s Hermits and the Rolling Stones. Home of Mary Quant, Vidal Sassoon and mini-skirts.  (more…)

Janine Jarman’s Diana Ross Hair Victory On Shear Genius 3 Episode 7

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

After doing a spectacular job winning the Shortcut Challenge on Shear Genius 3, Episode 7, Janine Jarman stepped up and blew away the other SG3 contestants, judges and viewers in The Elimination Challenge.

I decided to go back and do a blow by blow, no pun intended, of all of Janine’s actions, quotes and results for anyone who missed this hair diva extraordinaire on the show last week.  I for one can’t believe it’s only Saturday and we have to wait four more days until the next competition with the bottom four.

(Image Of Four Remaining Shear Genius Contestants after Episode 7 – LR Front Row – Matthew, Janine, Back Row LF – Jon, Brig – Shear Genius 3 – Bravo/TV – All Rights Reserved)

The Elimination Challenge started with the five contestants being greeted by host/judge Camilla Alves wearing a short sleek bob.  Probably a wig but definitely cute.

She told the SG3 contestants about their elimination challenge which was designing hairstyles for Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Estelle who was hold “a Red Carpet event that will be happening here, later tonight.”  Camilla then introduced Estelle. (more…)

Shear Genius 3 Why Brian Buterbaugh Shouldn’t Have Been Given The Final Cut

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I’ve already written a blog about the sequence of events which lead to Brian Buterbaugh being cut from Shear Genius 3 (SG3) Episode 7.

To be honest, I was shocked when Brian was cut and Brig was kept.  The only reason I could see was because Brig is a drama queen, troublemaker and all around pain in the butt.  Of course that makes for great TV and afterall, Bravo/TV is in the reality TV business.

Thinking back to all of Brian’s competitions, he did some amazing work.  I was first blown away by his chocolate mousse creation in Episode 2 of The Elimination Challenge.

His creation truly looked like you could swipe a finger into the design and get a lick of chocolate.

Camilla Alves commented on how much Brian’s work looked truly edible and delicious.  I was actually surprised Brian didn’t win the Elimination Challenge, but Jon beat him with his sea scallops design.

Of the two hairstyles, I thought Brian had the edge but that’s the way the cookies crumbles. (more…)

Janine Jarman Has Grand Slam On Shear Genius 3 Episode 7

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I had the pleasure of meeting Janine Jarman some years ago at the point in her career when she was just opening her amazing Hairroin Salon.  Since that time I have watched Janine grow into a world class celebrity and high fashion hairdresser.

It’s almost as if Janine was a rare flower and I have had the special privilege of watching her blossom over the years.

(Image of Shear Genius 3 cast – Janine Jarman is far left in the red dress – Bravo/TV – All Rights Reserved)

I was so thrilled when I heard Janine was going to be on Shear Genius 3.

While I’ve watch Shear Genius 1 and 2, I was not nearly as obsessed with every little detail as I am for Shear Genius 3.  Maybe because I’m rooting for Janine to win.

Imagine my glee when Janine swept both the Shortcut Challenge and the Elimination Challenge on the seventh episode.

Janine started with a bang when she took an African American model and designed a spectacular custom updo for her.  Not only did Janine do any amazing job of creating a winning hairstyle, she won high praise from guest judge, Kimberly Kimble.   Although Brian came in second, Janine’s hairstyle was so brilliant, Brian wasn’t even a close second. (more…)

Shear Genius 3 Recap – Episodes 1 – 7

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

If you’re like me you start to forget who won what during each of the competitions on Shear Genius 3.  I also forget the guest judges which rotate through every episode like crazy.

Sometimes the guest judges will judge only one of the challenges.  Other times they will judge both.  It appears that the guest judges were selected based on their particular expertise in the hair world.

Ding Dong The Brig Witch Is Alive On Shear Genius 3, Episode 7

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Episode 7 of Shear Genius 3 picked up the pace with lots of thrills and chills.  There were two guest judges, celebrity hairdresser Kim Kimble and singer Estelle.  There was more filming behind the scenes at the SG3 contestants lodging and Brig’s fangs became even more visible.

(Brig – Bravo/TV – Shear Genius 3 – All Rights Reserved)

The Shortcut Challenge involved African American models who recently graduated from high school.  The challenge was dealing with styling African American hair for formal events.

The guest judge was celebrity hairdresser Kimberly Kimble who is hairdresser to Beyonce and Mary J. Blige.  I have interviewed Kimberly in the past and she is a doll.  Very knowledgeable, but a great lady.

The remaining contestants included Janine, Matthew, Jon, Brian and the evil orange haired Brig. Although Janine, Matthew, Jon and Brian all seem to get along well, Brig doesn’t seem to get along with anyone now that Amy is gone.

Brig has made it clear it’s her against Janine and Matthew who appear to be on the fast track to winning.  Jon and Brian have had successes but not compared to Janine and Matthew.

For the African American Short Cut challenge Janine told the camera “I’m super experienced with African American hair.  I’m used to the texture.  I did Lil Kim’s hair for awhile, I’m confident going into this.” (more…)

Katie Cassidy Goes With An Ultra Glam Updo Hairstyle

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Although CW’s Melrose Place didn’t catch on fire as the network had hoped, the new show is definitely helping to blow up the career of blonde beauty Katie Cassidy who plays the resident schemer.

(Image of Katie Cassidy – 6th Annual Hollywood Style Awards – DailyCeleb.com – All Rights Reserved).

Katie combined a very tight, very short black dress with a sweetheart style back which meant completely open from her shoulders to her waist except for one well-place strap.  The front of her little black dress had a plunging V neck.  The focal points of her dress were her puffed cap sleeves and stand up color.

In other words, the tiny little black dress showcased all of Katie’s other assets including her gorgeous back, long legs, beautiful arms and tiny waist.

In some respects Katie could have walked down the Red Carpet in a spray painted dress and would have shown the same physical gifts.   She set off the dress with high black peep toe shoes which showcased her ankle tat. (more…)
