Hair How To: Questions You Must Ask Before Getting Any Cut Or Color

Monday, April 4th, 2011

It’s common knowledge in the hair world is that the devil is in the details.  What does this mean?

Quite simply that before you spontaneously pop into your hairstylist’s chair and whimsically ask for a sizzling new hair cut and dramatic new color you need to ask the following questions:

1.  What will it take to maintain this cut and/or color?
2.  How often will I need to do root touch up?
3.  How often will I need to have the cut trimmed or reshaped?
4.  Will this haircut work with my face shape?
5.  Will the color complement my skin and eye tone?
6.  Does this haircut work for his hair type, texture and current condition?
7.  Does this haircut add or subtract age and/or pounds?
8.  How difficult will it be to duplicate the styling techniques at home?
9.  If I decide I don’t like it how hard would it be to return to my current hair color and/or style?
10.  How long will it take the hair cut to grow out and what styles can I transition to?
11.  Are there new products I will need to buy to maintain the color or create the new styles?
12.  What is the best features of the color and/or cut?
13.  What are the worst features of the new color and/or cut?
14.  If you were me, would you recommend this cut and or color or something else and why?

Celeb Hairstylist Orlando Pita Says Kate Winslet’s Hair Was Cut And Dyed For British Vogue

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

According to an interview with MODERN SALON, celebrity hairstylist Orlando Pita says that Kate Winslet’s hair was cut for the British Vogue cover.

He told MODERN “I think Kate is very versatile and can wear many different looks.  We chose this look because the photographer Mario Testino wanted to giver her a very different look.  The fashion in the story was black and white so we decided to go with almost white hair and cut it short and choppy.”

(Image of Orlando Pita – Shear Genius 3 – Bravo/TV – All Rights Reserved)

Pita, a celebrity hair consultant on Bravo’s recent season of Shear Genius, also noted the Academy Award winner’s hair on British Vogue was a dramatic departure from her former shoulder length, dirty blonde locks.

Of course transitioning hair color from dirty blonde to stark white was shocking to fans as was the short choppy hair which many questioned.  Did Kate really cut her hair or not?  After all, many celebrities over the years have stunned fans with a drastic new length or color only to confess later to wearing a wear, hair extensions or some other instant hair altering accessory.

Jessica Simpson famously shocked fans a few years ago by showing up at a red carpet event wearing a drastic new red hair hue.

Shortly afterwards her celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves explained he and Simpson had collaborated on her stunning new do by having her wear a new wig from her Jessica Simpson collection.  Simpson also told the media she used powder mascara to camouflage any random blonde roots that might have popped out from the wig. Justin Bieber’s Hairstylist Vanessa Price Cuts His Hair Every Two Weeks

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Justin Bieber recently made hair headlines when he presented Ellen Degeneres with a bag of his recently snipped hair.  The talk show host posted the hair for sale on eBay where it fetched over $40,000 with the proceeds going to charity.

With all this talk about the value of a bag full of Bieber’s hair clippings you might wonder who yields the scissors shaping the Bibermeister’s strands on a regular basis.  it’s hairdresser Vanessa Price who designed his original swooped fringe style back in 2009.

Price reportedly trims Bieber’s hair every two weeks to keep it picture perfect.  The cost?  $760 per cut, just for the cut.  That doesn’t include washing, drying or styling.  That might sound like a lot of money for a haircut but considering the Bieb’s hair snippets went for $40,000, it pays for him to have the best haircuts in town.

Price travels on tour with the Biebs to make sure his signature strands always look spectacular.  Afterall, what would Justin Bieber be without his trademark tresses?

Haircut Controversy Continues In Virginia Prison System

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

As reported by The Huffington Post, several Rastafarians and other prison inmates have been moved to a high-security prison as official push the prisoners to cut their hair.  The standoff between the prisoners and prison officials boils down to issues of religious belief versus state’s grooming policies for prisoners.

This is not a new issue.  In fact, many inmates have reportedly spent more than a decade in isolation for refusing to cut their hair.  The prison puts those refusing haircuts into a program to persuade them to cut their hair.  Virginia corrections department spokesman Larry Traylor told the media that nine of the prisoners chose to go back to segregation rather than cut their hair.

(Image of Rastafarian with dreaded hair – Wikipedia – Photo by Jonathan Stephens – Found on – All Rights Reserved)

While corrections officials said the the program to encourage compliance with prison haircut rules offers inmates more privileges and a change to socialize, the prisoners not wanting to cut their hair aren’t buying it.  In letters to the AP, the inmates criticized the program and said it was just segregation by another name.

The prison program encouraging compliance with prison haircut requirements gives graduated privileges to inmates such as time outside cells, money to spend in the commissary and freedom during recreation time if the inmates take classes on anger management and behavioral modification.    Inmates who finish the program “graduate” to the general population, where there are even more privileges. Ginnifer Goodwin’s Sexy Short Hair

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Ginnifer Goodwin was born Jennifer Goodwin on May 22, 1978 in Memphis, Tennessee.   She’s best known as Margene on HBO’s Big Love, the third wife in a Mormon polygamous family. Sadly, this is the last season for Big Love.

The TV and film actress also co-starred in the movies Mona Lisa Smile and He’s Just Not That Into You.  She also appeared in Ramona and Beezus (playing Ramona Quimby’s Aunt Bea), co-starring with John Corbett, Bridget Moynahan, and Selena Gomez.

In 2008, MaxMara honored Goodwin with a “Face of the Future” award, an award recognizing up and coming women in film. Also, Goodwin was one of the celebrities featured in Gap’s Fall 2008 ad campaign.

The adorable vegan actress changed her name from “Jennifer” to “Ginnifer” because that is how she and her family pronounced it in their regional dialect. Her younger sister, Melissa Goodwin, is a stop motion animator on shows such as the Emmy Award-winning Robot Chicken, on which Ginnifer has also appeared as voice talent. (more…)

Hair-salon Operator Regis Corporation Has Management Shakeup

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Hair-salon operator Regis Corp (RGS.N) undertook a management shakeup on Thursday, February 3, appointing current Chief Financial Officer Randy Pearce as President, to replace Chief Executive Paul Finkelstein.

Finklestein, who has spent 23 years with Regis, will remain as Chairman and CEO through 2011 and will transition to the role of Executive Chairman in 2012.

Brent Moen — currently Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller — will take over from Pearce as CFO, the company said in a statement.

Regis, which operates the Vidal Sassoon and Supercuts chains, has been witnessing sluggish sales as shoppers spend less on hair cuts and personal grooming amid an uncertain economic environment.

Shares of the Minneapolis-based company closed at $17.06 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Pauly D Gets Naturally Curly Hair Cut Every Week

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

The January 31st issue of Us Weekly listed 25 Things You Don’t Know about Pauly D of MTV’s Jersey Shore.  The resident DJ, who is 30, is famous for spending a lot of time on his strands but the Us Weekly piece offered some interesting insights.

Pauly D said he washes his hair every day and flies home “once a week for a haircut – same guy for 14 years!”  Wow, that’s a lot of airline miles for a haircut ,but Pauly D has naturally curly tresses and everyone knows natural texture requires the skills of a hair cutting expert.

It’s no secret the handsome DJ spends lots of time on his hair.   Afterall, it shows.

Pauly D also claims to be a neat freak whose daily blowouts take 25 minutes.   Of course the daily blowouts combined with the daily shampoo sessions cut into his famous GTL time, but since Pauly also gets a manicure every other week, you know this Jersey Shore star is very well groomed.

Pauly explained he goes for his manicures because a “DJ’s hands have to look good” and his hands always look spectacular.  He didn’t mention pedicures but I bet he gets them.  He seems to really be on the ball with doing what it takes to look great.

My only regret?  Pauly D didn’t disclose the name of his haircut guru.  It makes sense.  If Pauly’s there once a week and the fans find out where and who does his impeccable cuts on his natural curls he risks walking into a madhouse.

I loved that Pauly told Us that “my favorite thing in the world is the feeling I get when I walk out and see the crowd right before I deejay.”

No wonder, with impeccable hair, nails and fashions, the man should feel great.  Kudos to Pauly D for being a great example of the importance of men’s grooming.

Justin Bieber’s $760 Haircuts Create Media Buzz

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

One of the news stories currently buzzing on the web is about Justin Bieber’s expensive haircuts.  According to various media sources Justin gets  his hair cut twice a month at a rate of around $760 per cut.  According to insiders, that amount is just for the cut without any of the add-on items such as washing, blow drying, styling or coloring.  The Bieb’s hairdresser?  Vanessa Price who claims bragging rights for his very first iconic hairstyle introduced in 2009.

Price travels with Justin and coifs his hair for his concerts and other personal appearances.  This is a very common practice.  All major recording and performance artists travel with a hair and make-up team.

Sometimes the hair and make-up are provided by the same person. Depending on how successful or popular the star is, they may have several people who travel with them to cut, blow-dry, color, style and fluff and puff.

While some bloggers are making a big deal out of Justin paying $760 for a cut, this is actually very little compared to what Britney, Madonna, Rhianna and Beyonce pay for their hair cuts.  Many of the big celebrity stylists like Chris McMillan charge literally thousands a day to travel with their celebrity to keep their hair looking chic and photo ready.  Remember when the media went crazy over Aniston’s budget for McMillan on one of her film promotional trips to Europe?

My only comment about Justin’s monthly haircut bills is that I’m glad to see his hairstyles are changing.  I am really loving his latest hairstyle with the separation throughout the bangs.  It showcases his eyes and gives him a softer more accessible look.  Kudos to Price for her ability to keep The Bieb’s bangs looking fresh and celebrity worthy.  His hair looked fantastic at the recent 2011 Golden Globes.

If you think $760 is a lot, imagine what Price’s daily rate to travel with Biebs is.  Yep, didn’t see that one coming, did you.
