Saturday, February 12th, 2011

When American Idol winner Jordin Brianna Sparks (born December 22, 1989) first appeared on the sixth season of the reality TV show she showcased her stunning natural curls.

She was noteworthy not only for her beautiful ringlets and voice, but for her age.  At the time she won AI she was the youngest winner in the history of the competition.

As she progressed towards the finals her hair went through a transition from tightly curled to lightly waved.  The American pop and  R&B singer, songwriter, model and actress from Glendale, Arizona also changed her make-up and fashions.

In the five years since the then 17 year old Jordin won AI, her hair styles have changed dramatically.   She traded in her natural curls for bone straight strands.  She also cycled through a range of different hues and lengths. (more…)

Transition Into Spring With Great New Hair Color And Styles

Friday, February 4th, 2011

It may not seem like Spring is only five weeks away, especially if you live in the Midwest or East Coast where Winter storms are raging.  As warmer temperatures and sunny skies approach, we’ll all be craving a fresh new hair look.  Maybe even an updated hair color!

Below are some tips from Pam Kelly, the Senior Director/National Technical Education for Fantastic Sams® Hair Salons to help guide you through the process of deciding what hair color and/or styles might be best based on the latest trends in Spring hair color and care.

Find The Right Shade – The first thing you need to do is make sure the color matches your skin tone. Chestnut brown, blonde and copper shades compliment warm undertone complexions. Burgundy, cinnamon, and mahogany work best for those with cooler complexions. Platinum blondes will be very popular this spring and summer but if your complexion doesn’t allow for the white blonde shades, try a shade in beige or light golden tones that will brighten up the face. Celebrity Related Orthorexia Can Lead To Accelerated Hair Loss, Thinning, Damage

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Celebrities are often applauded by the media for how fast they shed pregnancy pounds, diet into teeny bikinis or get instantly thin for a movie or music tour.

While nutritionists worry about celebrities diets triggering anorexic behaviors in young women, there is a new danger for women in their 30s and 40s known as orthorexia.

While anorexia is severe restriction of any type of food and bulimia is the need to immediately purge food binges, orthorexia is an eating disorder tied to obsession over the purity of the food that enters the body.

Orthorexics often avoid entire food groups in order to lose weight.  Many of these entire food groups are essential to eating a balanced nutritional plan,.

Nutritionists highlight celebrity fads such as the blood group diet, which is advertised by Cheryl Cole, and the Maple Syrup detox diet, used by Beyonce and Naomi Campbell as two diets which might trigger orthorexia in some people.  Those on the maple syrup diet consume little else, but sugary water. This has none of the protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals needed to remain healthy. (more…)

Ellin LaVar Is Still The Queen Of Weaves, Extensions, Braids And Naturally Textured Hair

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Although I somehow fell through the Oprah cracks as one of her ultimate viewers, I have actually been watching the show since the beginning.  I will admit that many of the shows I focused on were related to hair and beauty topics because afterall, that’s been my focus for a long time.

(Image courtesy of Ellin LaVar – All Rights Reserved)

Recently I found a huge three ring binder stuffed to the brim with clippings and notes I had squirreled away over the past 25 years with all kinds of hair and beauty tips, notes and obscure goodies.  One one of the pages I found a note to myself about New York’s fabulous weave and hair extension expert, Ellin La Var, who has appeared on Oprah.

I popped over to Ellin’s website and sure enough, she has a video clip from one of her visits on Oprah where they discussed the fact Ellin had coiffed Oprah’s hair with a weave.   Yes, we all know that Oprah has Andre Walker as her long time show hairdresser but she obviously worked with Ellin at various points in her career and admitted to wearing weaves.

Is Oprah’s Hair A Weave Or Not A Weave?

When Oprah first joined Twitter she tweeted that her hair was not a weave.  At least at that point it wasn’t and for her trip to Australia she was spotted wearing her hair in a series of perky little ponytails.  Again, definitely not a weave. (more…)

How To Get Your Natural Hair Color Back – If You Really Want To?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

It’s a common wish amongst those hair consumers who’ve dabbled with hair color at home or have gone through a series of hue transitions with the help of a color professional.

How easy is it to take your hair back to it’s God given hue?  It depends on a variety of factors including do you really want to revert to the color you were born with?  If you’ve been coloring your hair for many years, you may actually be disappointed if you go back in color time to the original version of yourself.

Dig Out The Photo Album

Before you hit the hair color aisle at the local drugstore or book a very expensive professional hair color appointment so some soul searching.  Dig out photos of yourself as a baby, small child and teen.  Did you like the way your hair color evolved as your aged?  Or did you change your color because your original hue looked dull, boring or lacking in pizazz?  Good question, right?

Once you’ve researched your hair color from the past talk to your family and friends.  Do they prefer the color you currently have or do they prefer you in a previous shade?  You might be surprised to hear what they have to say. (more…)
