Bad Hair Dye Leaves Young Girl With Blistering Scalp

Two years ago, a 14-year-old girl walked into a location of a large hair salon chain in Florida with her heart set on having her brown strands  dyed blue.

The result?  According to legal papers filed in a civil lawsuit, the young girl left the salon with third-degree burns on a blistering scalp.

Her attorney, alleges that his young client has undergone two skin grafts and must have at least one more to deal with the damage caused by the bad color job.  According to the attorney, the young girl’s parents have had medical expenses in excess of $85,000 for the damage done by the dye to their daughter’s scalp and hair.

Note: Image of Lady Gaga who often sports bleached white or multi-colored hair including blue.  Lady Gaga has told the media in the past that she misses her natural hair color which has been damaged from all the chemical treatments.

“In addition to the initial pain and the surgeries she’s had to undergo, the skin on her scalp is hypersensitive to the touch,” the attorney said.  The girl’s attorney also said “And emotionally, you know, kids at that age can be cruel, and she has had comments made to her. That’s been difficult.” (more…)

Combining Hair Processes

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Although Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera appear to have picture-perfect tresses which appear to combine multiple chemical processes, the reality is that most of these divas wear wigs.

Some, but not all, of the divas and/or their celebrity hair gurus have admitted their use of custom made wigs to combine brilliant color with stick straight strands.

More Info: Chemical Hair Straightening Faqs

Unless us mere mortals have access to the cream of the celebrity hair crop who can create spectacular hair hues and textures, it is never advisable to actually combine hair color with other chemicals.

Yes, if you search you may find hairstylists who say its okay to color and then chemically alter the texture.  But the reality is that most hair experts strongly advise against combining bleaching, coloring, relaxing or chemical straightening.

Even more damaging would be to add weaves on top of hair which is first colored and chemically straightened. (more…)

Hair How To: Questions You Must Ask Before Getting Any Cut Or Color

Monday, April 4th, 2011

It’s common knowledge in the hair world is that the devil is in the details.  What does this mean?

Quite simply that before you spontaneously pop into your hairstylist’s chair and whimsically ask for a sizzling new hair cut and dramatic new color you need to ask the following questions:

1.  What will it take to maintain this cut and/or color?
2.  How often will I need to do root touch up?
3.  How often will I need to have the cut trimmed or reshaped?
4.  Will this haircut work with my face shape?
5.  Will the color complement my skin and eye tone?
6.  Does this haircut work for his hair type, texture and current condition?
7.  Does this haircut add or subtract age and/or pounds?
8.  How difficult will it be to duplicate the styling techniques at home?
9.  If I decide I don’t like it how hard would it be to return to my current hair color and/or style?
10.  How long will it take the hair cut to grow out and what styles can I transition to?
11.  Are there new products I will need to buy to maintain the color or create the new styles?
12.  What is the best features of the color and/or cut?
13.  What are the worst features of the new color and/or cut?
14.  If you were me, would you recommend this cut and or color or something else and why?

Hair How To: Adrianne Palicki’s Sleek Shiny Bone Straight Long Hairstyle

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Adrianne Palicki has experienced a dramatic hair color journey during her acting career.

Palicki (born May 6, 1983) is best known for her role as the platinum blonde Tyra Collette on the NBC television series Friday Night Lights.  She was a series regular for the first three seasons of the acclaimed show.  Palicki left the series to appear in films, but returned to appear in the final two episodes of the series.

When she returned for the last two episodes of Friday Night Lights we came back as a dark cherry kissed brunette.  It was hard to believe it was the same Tyra Collette.  What happened to her platinum blonde tresses?

When Palicki left to co-star opposite Lucas Black in “Legion” her role called for her to be a brunette.  She also starred in Fox/TV’s “Lone Star” in which her hair was also dark chocolate.  Sadly “Lone Star” was canceled after just two episodes but she kept the dark hued tresses.

On February 16, 2011, it was announced that a still sultry brunette hue Palicki was selected to portray Wonder Woman in David E. Kelley’s adaptation for NBC.  It appears her days as a blonde are over.  At least for now. (more…)

Lady Gaga’s Chemical Haircut Highlights Known Bleaching And Blonding Challenges

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Pop star Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta, has admitted to People.com that her trademark white blonde hair is falling out because of constant dyeing and bleaching.

The superstar performer said “I have to get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out”.    Lady Gaga is a natural brunette but has spent many years dyeing her hair blonde.

Hair Problems Due To Excessive Dying And Bleaching

While anything Lady Gaga does with her hair, make-up, body or fashions sets the world on fire, her confession of blonde hair trauma is nothing new.  Many celebrities from Paris Hilton to Christina Aguilera have suffered through bouts of hair problems as a result of excessive drying and bleaching.

Although Lady Gaga’s hair hues range from start white blonde to a mixture of eggnog, egg yolk and ashy gray blonde, it’s hard to know exactly how dark her natural brunette shade it.  The darker her natural brunette hue, the stronger the dye that has to be used to pop open the cuticle and lift the color to a light white. Hair How To: Audrina Patridge’s Long Lush Waves

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Reality Star Audrina Patridge is famous for her long sexy hairstyles and hair hues.

Patridge recently took her trademark long lush beachy waves to a softer, lighter hue cascading from an off-center part.  Her latest hair color incarnation works well with her perpetually tanned skin.  The lighter hue also plays well with her eyes and lips.

Audrina admits on her official blog “I feel my hair is usually my biggest flaw!  My hair is actually naturally super straight! I don’t own a hair straightener.  I wish I had wavy hair. I usually put a wave in it, put it up in a pony tail or clip it half way back!”

As far as her natural hair and eye color, Audrina admits “I’m naturally a dirty blonde. My eyes are hazel, but at times look brown, amber or green. So when it comes to coloring my hair, I sometimes go dark which brings out the green.  But I tend to not ask for a specific color, – I like honey tones.”

Hair How To: Step By Step

To copy Audrina’s lightly tousled beachy waves, start with a toffee or caramel base infused with platinum highlights.

1.  Cleanse hair in lukewarm water with desired methodology such as shampoo, Diluted Shampoo (DS), Conditioner Only (CO), Water Only (WO), Lo Poo, No Poo or a combination.   Select the best products for your hair type, texture and condition.

2.  Rinse well.  Apply desired leave-in conditioner from the ears down to the ends.  With the conditioner still in the hair, use fingers or hair-friendly wide tooth comb to detangle.  Start from the ends and work slowly and gently up towards the roots. (more…)

How To Copy Ashlee Simpson’s Platinum Blonde Short Cropped Hairstyle

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

One thing is definitely true about singer, songwriter and reality star, Ashlee Simpson.  She is a hair pioneer.  Throughout her career she has set trends with her drastic hair hue changes, lengths, styles and individuality.  When it comes to changing her hair Ashlee has no fear.  She appears willing to take on new strand challenges with complete confidence.

Yes, Ashlee has some of the best hair colorists, cutters and stylists at her fingertips, but Ashlee is a strong minded person who makes her own decisions about her image, her hair and her life.  That has been obvious since she burst out from underneath her sister’s shadow with her own reality show as she launched her own singing career to adoring fans.

Although Ashlee settled into a long red hued hairstyle during her pregnancy with her son Bronx, she recently made a drastic change with her super short white, white blonde hair transformation.  Ironically superstore Kate Winslet recently unveiled her own version of a platinum super short crop for the cover of this month’s British Vogue.

Although a white, white blonde hue requires constant upkeep to manage root regrowth, because Ashlee has such short hair, it will be a lot easier to maintain than longer platinum hued lengths.

The advantage to going really short with platinum blonde hues is that shorter hair means less danger of damage from the bleaching agents.  It also means roots are much easier to handle and there is less danger of color overlap or discolored ends.

The other plus to Ashlee’s chic chop is that it’s truly a wash and wear hairstyle. (more…)
