Waves, Curls, Coils Or Kinks may or may not fit into a clear definition or classification.

Whether your naturally textured hair consists of waves, curls, coils or kinks only really matters when trying to determine your possible treatment, maintenance and hair product plans to utilize.

Textured Hair Classification Systems

Although there are a number of Textured Hair Classification Systems which have been around for many years, many textured hair people consider The Andre Walker Hair Typing System is thought by experts to be the most comprehensive system.

The FIA Hair Typing System is very similar to the The Andre Walker Hair Typing System

Unlike the Andre Walker system it has one extra category for Type III Curly hair and also adds the definition of the “Z” shape to Type IVa and b hair.

The Andre Walker Hair Typing System was created by Oprah Winfrey’s long time hair stylist.

According to the Andre Walk system there are four types of hair:

Type I – Naturally Straight Hair
Ia – Straight (Fine/Thin) – Hair is shiny, potentially oily, hard to damage or hold curls.
Ib – Straight (Medium/Coarse) – Hair is coarse with volume and/or body
Ic – Straight (Bone Straight/Coarse) – Hard to curl, this is often found in Asian hair.

According to the FIA Typing System, some Ic naturally straight hair may have one or two loose S patterns intertwined throughout hair.

Type II – Wavy
IIa – Wavy (Fine/Thin) – Hair has definite “S” pattern.  Easy styling straight, wavy or curly.
IIb – Wavy (Medium) – Can be frizzy and resistant to styling.
IIc – Wavy (Coarse) – Frizzy or very frizzy with thicker waves.  Resistant to styling.

Type III – Curly
IIIa
– Curly (Loose) – Curly hair that usually presents a definite “S” pattern and tends to combine thickness, fullness, body and/or frizziness.
IIIb – Curly (Tight) – IIIa “S” pattern curls,  but with tighter curling more like a spiral. The FIA Typing System includes a IIIc pattern which defined coils.
IIIc
– Curly (Extremely) – IIIb pattern but with very tight spirals and/or coils

Type IV – Kinky
IVa – Kinky (Soft) –  Hair tends to be very fragile, tightly coiled and can feature curly to very tight curl patterning
IVb – Kinky (Wiry) –  Like IVa, but with less visible (or no) curl patterning.
IVc – Kinky (Very Wiry) – As IVa and IVb, but with almost no defined curl pattern in any.

The FIA Typing System includes a IVb and IVc pattern description whereas the hair has a “Z” pattern, sharp angles and tight to very tight kinks.

Challenges With Hair Texture Classification Systems

Although it’s helpful to have well-defined hair texture classification systems as a general rule of thumb, all people will not necessarily fit neatly into one category.

Every head of naturally textured hair is unique and different.  Some people may have multiple types of hair on the same head of hair.

Or one hair type might include all different subcategories.

Personally I have naturally wavy hair which would most likely be classified as IIc with coarse wavy hair which at times is prone to being frizzy if I don’t keep my hair highly hydrated.  It’s definitely resistant to styling.

Waves, Curls, Coils Or Kinks Classification
Systems Are Meant To Be Broken

My hair also has IIIa loose curls around the nape of my neck which presents a definite “S” pattern and tends to combine thickness, fullness, body and/or frizziness.

There are other potential differences in each and everyone’s hair type and texture which makes it difficult in some cases to get a well defined texture profile.

In other words, texture classification systems are meant to be broken depending on the person.

The length of the hair can also determine unique differences.  When hair is worn shorter, the texture patterns may be more pronounced.  When hair is worn longer, the patterns may soften and be hard to easily spot.

Summary

What is the benefit of utilizing hair texture classification systems to determine if you have Waves, Curls, Coils Or Kinks?

Not only can you get a better understanding of the best hair care products to utilize on your hair type and texture, you can learn the best tricks or techniques for manifesting your very best hair.

The downside is that not all people fit easily into a single category.

Many people might fall into multiple categories and have a range of types and textures on one head of hair.

Ideally it’s best to create your own definition of your hair type and texture, match that as closely as possible to the texture classifications you relate to and then build your own custom textured hair care program.

Simone Missick who was a fan favorite on Luke Cage, has beautifully naturally textured hair

She’s shared her hair product preferences for Carol’s Daughter Sulfate Free Poo and Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shea Moisture (or JBCO) for loc and braiding her hair.

She also has shared how much she loves Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercreme for a twist out hairstyle which is always poppin.

Ted Gibson Is A Shooting Star

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019

From the very moment of HairBoutique.com‘s birth back in the mid-1990s I was aware that hair guru Ted Gibson is a shooting star.

Ted Gibson Is A Shooting Star

Born in my own beloved state of Texas, Scorpion Ted Gibson (November 15, 1965) has risen to become one of the top celebrity hairdressers of all time.

In 2003 he made International headlines with his 2,500-square-foot eponymous salon in New York’s Flatiron district.

From Austin, Texas To A Household Name On TV’s What Not To Wear

The brilliantly talented hairstylist and his famed hair colorist husband, Jason Backe, had the hair world in the palms of their ultra-talented hands.

Ted went on to become a household name on What Not To Wear from 2009 until 2013 when he appeared on the popular TV show.

Launching The Hottest New Hair Trend For 2019

Some of the world’s biggest celebrity, socialite and political stars have Ted Gibson as Favorites on their smart devices.

Just recently Ted made International headlines for creating actress Sandra Oh’s gorgeous wave infused hairstyle at the recent Golden Globes where the lovely star was a co-host and Globe winner.

By working his legendary hair magic and cutting bangs into Sandra’s naturally textured hair Ted launched the hottest hair trend for 2019.

A Virtual Who’s Who Of Celebrity, Socialite And Political Hair As Well As Fashion Clients

Ted Gibson Is A Shooting Star

Ted’s famous clients also include, but aren’t limited to: Angelina Jolie, Debra Messing, Anne Hathaway, Gabrielle Union, Bella Hadid, Elizabeth Banks, Lupita Yong’o, Gug Mbatha-Raw, Hilary Duff, Ashley Greene, Gabrielle Union, Bella Hadid, Ashley Greene, Renée Zellweger, Zoe Saldana and Demi Moore, to name just a few of his famous clients.

His hair genius is in demand by many of the world’s top fashion houses including Chanel and Prada.

Ted started working with fashion hair on the runways many years ago.  In an interview he did in 2012 during his work for Rachel Roy he noted that the first shows he ever did was “Miu Miu, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.”

A Humble Man Who Is Loyal, Kind And Never Forgets Those Who Gave Him Career Guidance

Over the years since I first started hearing about Ted Gibson the one thing which always impressed me about Ted is his loyalty to his roots and the people who helped him get his start.  He is also incredibly humble, kind, thoughtful and just a really good person.

From his humble beginnings going to barber college part time until he began a mentoring program under the renowned coaching of Zan Ray in Austin, Texas, Ted has remained loyal.

Ted continues to credit Zan for much of his success in life and as a hair guru.

Inspiration From The Late Great Horst Rechelbacher

Ted Gibson Shooting Star Creates Spectacular Styling Results On Both Wet And Dry Hai

Ted Gibson Shooting Star Creates Spectacular Styling Results On Both Wet And Dry Hair

He also never forgets his time with the late Horst Rechelbacher (founder of Aveda) whom Ted says “changed the way I thought about styling hair” and “he (Horst) showed me how to develop products, dress hair, and be an entrepreneur.”

Loyalty and kindness are two of my life touchstones which is why I have never lost the utmost respect for Ted Gibson and his amazing talents.  In the past Ted recommended Hairboutique to InStyle magazine.  I will never forget his lovely words and will always owe him my debt of kindness.

A Master Of Reinvention

Maybe because Ted is a Pluto ruled Scorpion who is always reinventing himself, or because he’s got secret crystal ball in his bedroom, he is always reinventing himself and his business model.

Ted has stated that the most challenging part of the hair industry “is maintaining relevancy: Once you’re on top, staying on top is a challenge. I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to carve out these different pieces of my business.”

He also wise said “you have to have many touchpoints; it’s not just about being behind a chair. I’d tell my 20-something self not to stress so much about money, where I was going to live. Everything is going to be all right and good.”

Taking His Own Career Advice

It really shouldn’t have been any surprise in 2016 when Ted and Jason decided to close their breathtakingly beautiful salon in New York City.

Even though Ted closed his gorgeous salon, he continued onward with his Internationally famous Ted Gibson Artistic Team consisting of hand picked artists from around the country representing the famous Ted Gibson brand.

Ted also made plans to develop a new product line and to continue to run the Ted Gibson Advanced Academy which provides classes for stylists who want to advance their careers to the next level.

Attracting A New Generation Of Hair Fans And Followers

Why did Ted and Jason close their New York salon?

Jason told WWD at the time “[Millennials] want to be able to create their own schedules.” He also said: “The way that they work is different. If we want to be attractive to that generation, then we need to be inspiring to them.”

Although at the time Jason said “new plans were in the works for a completely new venue for the future” he didn’t provide details.  He also explained “our whole idea of an 18-20 chair salon is kind of like a dinosaur.” He said “we want to be ahead of the curve. It’s really about a boutique kind of idea.”

Starting A Brand New Adventure Across The Country

When Ted and Jason closed their New York salon the duo promised they would be creating a brand new business concept.  Indeed they did, in spades.

Instead of just moving to another part of New York City Ted Gibson and Jason Backe grabbed relevancy with both hands.

SUNDAY TODAY WITH WILLIE GEIST — Pictured: Melissa McCarthy on Wednesday, May 13, 2018 — (Photo by Mike Smith/NBC) NBCUniversal Media, LLC.

Surprising many, the two hair gods moved completely across the country to the West Coast where Ted and Jason created a complete reinvention of their famous hair business.

Ted Gibson’s Shooting Star Texture Meringue Product

Even while busy reinventing himself Ted Gibson continued to work on creating amazing hair products.

After all, who better to create a new hair texture product than Ted Gibson who’s styled hair on a dizzying array of editorial shoots, for celebrity Red Carpets and for other key events?

Ted Gibson created his sizzling new Shooting Star Texture Meringue (SSTM) to offer endless styling possibilities.

Melissa McCarthy in the February 2019 issue of InStyle Magazine swears that Ted’s Shooting Star Texture Meringue “literally doubles” her hair volume.

SSTM Works On Both Wet And Dry Hair

Whether you use SSTM or wet or dry hair, you can achieve incredible results.  On wet hair the products creates big, beautiful, sexy blow outs.

SSTM is a high performance product with an intoxicating fragrance.  It has notes of fig and amber which gives way to notes of coriander and vanilla rounded out with creamy coconut and warm woods.

Ted Gibson Is A Shooting Star

By now you’ve probably figured out that I’m a huge fan of the amazingly gifted and talented superstar hairstylist Ted Gibson. Not because he’ll always be a Texan like me, or because he’s a Scorpio (one of my favorite signs after many years of studying astrology), but because he walks his talk.

This hard-working, kind and wildly talented man continues to push himself to ascend even higher mountains.

What else would you expect from a shooting star like Ted Gibson?

Recently when my partner and I moved just 26 miles away from our last home in Dallas I was a hot mess.  Imagine how much I admire Ted Gibson for moving completely across the country. I was totally in awe of his chutzpah.

I have no doubt, as he said in a past interview, Ted Gibson is “going to be all right and good.”

Step into the Fergie Hair 2018 Time Machine and set the dials to March 30, 2009.

Back in 2009 OK Magazine asked their fans an important Fergie (born Stacy Ann Ferguson on March 27, 1975) hair question.

“Is Fergie more Fergielicious as a brunette or a blonde?”

The fans weighed in with their opinions.

Blonde Or Brunette – Fergie Hair 2018

The results?

56% of the fans thought the beautiful singer looked most beautiful as a brunette.

44% thought the 2018 Host on Fox/TV’s  The Four:  Battle For Stardom looked best as a blonde.

Why was OK Magazine dissecting Fergie’s hair color?

Fergie Stunned As A Brunette

In March of 2009 the sexy songbird appeared and performed at the March of Dimes Beauty Ball with apl.de.ap her Black Eyed Pea Band Mate.

Fergie shocked many fans by showing up with shocking stick straight long dark brunette strands replacing her iconic white blonde tresses.

Since she first appeared on the music scene Fergie has cycled through every imaginable hair color, length and style.

Combining Blonde And Brunette Together

Although Fergie primarily wears her hair much lighter than darker, sometimes she combines both blonde and brunette into the very same color at the same time.

When she recently appeared at the Fox All-Star Party on Monday, May 14, 2018 her hair was platinum blonde with black tipped edges.

The American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress appeared at the party to promote her appearance as the host on Fox TV’s The Four.

Fergie has the perfect background to be the host on the The Four.

She originally achieved chart success as part of the hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas.

Her debut solo album, The Dutchess (2006), saw commercial success.

It spawned three Billboard Hot 100 number one singles; “London Bridge”, “Glamorous”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”.

Wild Orchid And Then The Black Eyed Peas

Fergie was originally a member of the children’s television series Kids Incorporated and the girl group Wild Orchid.

In 2001, she left the group and in the subsequent year joined The Black Eyed Peas.

She worked with The Black Eyed Peas on two albums before releasing her debut solo album in September 2006.

Fergie continued her collaboration with The Black Eyed Peas, and released a further two albums with them, The E.N.D. (2009) and The Beginning (2010).

Fergie began touring with her own group in 2009.

Her second solo album, Double Dutchess, was released on September 22, 2017.

Besides being known for her iconic hair colors, lengths and styles, Fergie has made a name for herself in the world of fragrances.

In May 2010, Fergie launched her first fragrance, Outspoken, under Avon and has since released four more.

Summary – Fergie Hair 2018

Fergie continues to delight her fans with her constantly changing hair lengths, styles and colors.

Beth Pearson’s Natural Hair On This Is Us (TIU) on NBC is one of the many great new hair stories included in the new Fall 2018 TV season shows.

Actress Susan Kelechi Watson (November 17, 1980) plays the strong, sassy wife of Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) on the critically acclaimed hit drama which highlights the lives and families of two parents, and their three children, born on their father’s birthday.

Showcasing Gorgeous Natural Hairstyles

Since the very episode, Beth has showcased an array of beautiful natural hairstyles ranging from stunning box braids to a spectacular afro which works in perfect harmony with her steely character as a mom to two natural and one adopted daughter.

Yes, she’s also been shown with a simple, but elegant ponytail which highlights how natural hair can be worn in a dizzying array of gorgeous styles.

Just like everything else the writers have so thoughtfully presented on TIU, Beth’s hair is just one component of the entire Randall/Beth marriage.

It’s not a perfect marriage, but it’s presented as realistically as possible.

THIS IS US — “Number Three” Episode 210 — Pictured: (l-r) Susan Kelechi Watson as Beth, Lyric Ross as Deja — (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC)

Last season when talking to Deja’ (Lyric Ross) mother about his wife Randall described Beth as “a Black Queen” who sleeps in “a headscarf and coconut oil”.

While it may seem like a small thing to most people, the way Beth wears her hair on TIU helps to shape her character and underlines her relationship not only with Randall and her family, the rest of the world.

Watson has shared in the media that she intentionally is constantly showcasing her naturally textured hair as Beth with the blessing of NBC. She has explained her constantly changing natural hairstyles on the show is her very personal “shout-out to black women” everyone.

She is demonstrating the death of the old American standard of beauty.  Women of all ages and color can do “beautiful things” with their hair to honor all different textures.

The 37-year-old actress who is directly descended from Jamaican and Nigerian ancestors has confessed to thinking through her story lines in advance with thoughts about how to wear her hair.

Watson has confessed she creates new hairstyles with the help of her on-set hairstylist which are most appropriate for the story’s message.

Once she has figured out in her head what she wants to do with her hair, she works with her stylist Renee to create it.

Constantly Changing Hairstyles – Beth Pearson’s Natural Hair On This Is Us

Watson has shared with the media in the past that she loves to play around with her hair and try out lots of different looks.   The actress plays with her hair both on and off screen and loves to experiment.

Since she likes to constantly change up her hairstyle, Watson is a big advocate for add-on hair. She also embraces an array of clip-ins, add-on braids, and various crochet hair options.

Not only does Watson as Beth showcase her fabulous naturally texture hair in an array of beautiful hairstyle, but her story lines also have included hair related issues with her family.

Summary – Beth Pearson’s Natural Hair On This Is Us Is A Key Theme

Last season her character developed growing concern over the well-being and self-esteem of her adopted daughter Deja who was refusing to deal with her hair.

After a touching bonding moment between Beth and Deja in the family home, the hair challenges of the newest member of the family seemed resolved.

That is, until an awkward Randall intrudes on the new trust Deja was building with Beth.

Trying to help Deja feel comfortable in their home and with her own natural beauty proven to be a major Pearson challenge.  Even though the outspoken teenager eventually chopped all her own naturally textured hair off, the ultimate message was delivered.

This Is Us provides so many hair stigma busting messages for 2018 that it’s inspired many devoted fans.

The hit TV serious has launched a new appreciation and awareness that all hair is beautiful, regardless of the type, texture, length or hairstyle.

Best Curly Hair Cut In Dallas – Model Charisse – A great haircut showcasing balayage highlights and low lights.  Hair by Rebecca Leigh – #BlancHairSalon – All Rights Reserved

Luckily I’ve discovered the Best Curly Hair Cut In Dallas which will instantly eliminate many super textured haircut horror stories.

Seriously?  Did I say Dallas, as in Dallas, Texas?

Yes, Dallas is famous for some of the most beautiful blondes on the planet.

Just ask Jessica Simpson, Robin Wright, Renée Zellweger and Morgan Fairchild.  A historically dark hued Selena Gomez went blonde temporarily.

Even the late Blonde Bombshell Jayne Mansfield was from Dallas.

Curly Hair In Dallas, Texas?

Curly hair?  Maybe Dallas isn’t known for textured hair, but it’s as big here as blonde tresses.

Dallas gets very hot, steamy and humid during the late Spring and Summer months.  Just imagine what happens to naturally curly hair in that type of weather.

Best Curly Hair Cut In Dallas – Hair by Rebecca Leigh – #BlancHairSalon – All Rights Reserved

When I think of superstar curly hair gurus I think of Lorraine Massey, a curly hair pioneer from England.

Or maybe the late John Sahag who reigned in New York as a brilliant dry hair cutter.

John Sahag, who I had the great opportunity to interview before his untimely death, could dry cut any unruly textured hair into a work of art.

Best Curly Hair Cut In Dallas – An Amazing 100%

Never mind her incedible blonde hue inventions.

Back to her incredible hair cuts on textured hair.

Having a fun and frivolous attitude regarding your hair is your ultimate secret.

All Hair Is Magical

Everyone’s hair is magical in their own unique, beautiful and amazing way.

Studies have shown the mind and body are intricately linked.  That means what you experience in your mind is reflected in your hair, skin and body.

Hair Imagery, Positive Thinking & Affirmations

With further thoughts, you can continue to feed the energy with positive imagery and affirmations which program your desire in your conscious and subconscious brain.

If you’re already familiar with utilizing visualizations and affirmations in your daily life simply redirect the focus to your thoughts, feelings and spoken words regarding your hair.

However, if you’re not familiar with how to incorporate those practices into your life, do some research on the best methods which might work for you.

Personally I’ve been a huge fan of Louise L. Hay for years.  She has published a wide range of books, tapes and videos on how to incorporate affirmations in your life on every imaginable subject.

Summary –  Supergirl Hair

Collagen In A Glass

Since 1975 the FDA has required all consumer products like collagen in a glass or similar drink mixes to include a complete product listing.

Collagen is a protein substance found in connective tissue, cartilage, and bone.  The dermis, which forms up to 85 percent of the thickness of skin, consists mainly of interlaced collagen fibers.

Elastin, responsible for making the skin supple and flexible, consists of springlike fibers that run between the collagen fibers.  When you’re young, collagen and elastin fibers form a tight-knit network.

As you age, those fibers tend to deteriorate.  The dermis loses its support and begins to bunch and fold underneath the epidermis.

Unfortunately the epidermis retains its original size, so the folds manifest as wrinkles.

Do Collagen Skin Creams Help Regenerate Deteriorating?

Collagen, as well as elastin molecules, are too large to penetrate the stratum corneum and soak down into the dermal layers.

While collagen and elastin infused creams are great at binding moisture to the stratum corneum, especially in climates with low humidity, they can’t replenish deteriorating collagen fibers.

Collagen and elastin face creams make the skin look and feel satiny or plumped up.   Unfortunately, the results are temporary since the creams only remain on the upper service of the skin.

Does Drinking Collagen In A Glass Live Up To The Sizzling Hot Hype?

Which brings me to the benefits of drinking collagen in a glass, versus slathering collagen, on my skin.

Although controversial in some circles, drinking collagen in a glass has been proven to be effective for some people.  I was impressed with what I discovered.

Why?  Collagen accounts for 25 to 30% of the total protein in the human body.  Even more importantly, it comprises approximately 75% of our skin.

Collagen is what gives the dermis (the thick inner layer of our skin) its firm structure.

As we age, the production of collagen in our bodies diminishes resulting in the loss of firmness and elasticity, and the appearance of wrinkles.

The Science Behind Collagen Beauty Booster

The Bioactive Collagen Peptides used in the Collagen Beauty Booster product consist of isolated collagen peptides.

These peptides provide maximum benefits for skin improvement.  The peptides were developed through a refined production process.   When consumed, these peptides support the production of collagen in your body.

More About The Collagen Beauty Booster Product

I’ve been experimenting with a range of various collagen drink mixes with some noteworthy results.

One collage drink mix I found which I liked, and seems to make a difference, is called The Collagen Beauty Booster.  The product is manufactured by Herbalife.

Why I Liked This Product

The reason I liked this product was because of the impressive clinical results which have been documented by the company.

I definitely liked how easy the product is to take.  It tastes good which is important to me.  Some of the other products I’ve tried didn’t taste very good and that made it hard for me to drink.

The suggested usage is to mix 2 scoops a day with water, tea or aloe juice.  You can also mix it with yogurt into a protein drink shake.

Formulated with Verisol collagen*, The Collagen Beauty Booster Product has been tested to show definite support of skin elasticity.  It’s also been proven to assist in the reduction of fine wrinkles.

Additional Vitamins Help Prevent Harmful Free Radical Cell Damage

Formulated for women and men, the product contains Vitamins A (as beta-carotene), C and E.  It’s been proven to help prevent harmful free radical cell damage which ages skin.

The Bioactive Collagen Peptides can also help to reduce signs of cellulite.

Additionally, the product supports strong nails and healthy hair with selenium, zinc and biotin.

Results will vary depending upon different people, their skin age and type.

Cheaters Blowdry Guide

Cheaters Blowdry Guide - Trendline Lagoon - 2004 - All Right Reserved

Cheaters Blowdry Guide – Trendline Lagoon – 2004 – All Right Reserved

I created my own Cheaters Blowdry Guide shortly after I got caught in a torrential downpour right after I had finished my normal wet wash procedure.

My hair looked and felt fabulous  Then an unexpected disastrous rainstorm left me looking like a drowned rat.

I had to break my own No Blowdry Rules because my hair had to look finished and polished.

Emergency Wet Hair Tricks

Regardless of whether you prefer to air dry or not, sometimes you just have a hair emergency which requires a quick blowdry.

Listed below are the easy steps for my cheaters blowdry guide which anyone can do after a flash flood or just a sweaty time at the health club:

#1.  Accordion Squeeze – Gently finger squeeze hair from roots down to the ends in an accordion style movement to remove as much moisture as possible from hair.  In an emergency you can pat hair dry with absorbent paper towels or a microfiber towel.
#2.  Add Leave-in – Once all excess water has been removed apply a leave-in conditioner, preferably with added heat protection which coat hair to help water slide off and speed drying.
#3.  Rough Dry – Power dry your hair moving the dryer in small circles, directing the dryer’s air flow up towards the roots.

Note:  If you’re worried about blow dryer heat damage, dry hair upside down, with your head hanging upside down.   Set the dryer to the slowest, coolest setting to minimize heat.

Use a dryer with a cool/cold setting or keep the cold shot button pressed in while drying.   Keep in mind that the colder the blow dryer temperature, the slower the hair will dry.

#4.  Polish Dry – Once hair has been power dried to 90%, use a 100% boar bristle brush or fingers to divide hair into four sections (2 front, 2 back).

Quickly polish hair by using the boar bristle brush to anchor hair at the ends, turning them under and directing air flow from the roots down to the ends.

#5.  Seal – After a short polishing, apply a drop of two of shine spray or serum to the palms of your hands and massage together

Lightly finger pick hair through entire of head to seal from moisture and humidity.

#6.  Wear Up of Down Or Both – Depending upon how your hair turns out after the emergency blow dry, you can wear your newly dried hair a variety of way.

Optional Steps

If your hair is naturally textured with waves or curls, if you prefer you can either scrunch hair while power drying and skip the polishing or use a long finger diffuser after a quick power dry.

If all else fails, after the quick blow dry, if your hair is long enough, pull hair into a knot, pony or braid.

At least your hair will look polished and in short order.

Summary – Cheaters Blowdry Guide

One of the most important attributes to utilizing a Cheater’s Blowdry Guide is to modify it according to your own hair type, texture, length and condition.

Sometimes it’s not even necessary to blow dry hair which has suddenly been exposed to a torrential downpour or other unexpected storm.

Maybe the best thing for you and your hair is to remove the excess moisture with an accordion squeeze, towel blot and then braid or pin into a knot or bun.

The most important thing to remember with any hair care tips and tricks is to start with the basics, modify for your own unique needs and then be sure to have fun with your experimenting.

Happy Hair Drying.

Long Male Layered

Actor Matthew Gray Gubler is a classic example of a long male layered hairstyle.

As Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds on the CBS Television Network, the former runway model rocks a classic long male layered hairstyle with panache.

From Edgy Skater Boys To Sexy Professionals

The popular male cut, which traditionally has been showcased by edgy skater boys, surfers and bad boy rockers has a more squared shape.

Just as long hair on women has become much more popular over the past few years, the same can be said of me.

The long male layered hairstyle is a great compromise for professional men who want the sexy edge while looking polished.

One Size Does Not Fit All Hair Types & Textures

Although Matthew wears this classic style just below his ears, it can be worn collar or shoulder length without compromising the integrity of the hair cut’s shape.

Although it can be worn on stick straight hair, it will require styling products, a brush and blow dryer to create movement and flow.

Ultimately it’s ideal for hair which has some bend and can be air dried.

It’s also great for strands which have a medium wave pattern.   It’s not the best cut for fine or fine hair.

Definite & Square Weighted Area

While haircuts for females are traditionally more rounded and curved, haircut’s like Matthew’s have more defined square shapes and weighted areas.

The long male layered haircut originates from classical men’s barbering techniques.  The style has a precision layered effect with longer lengths.  It has a definite finely tapered style and design.

The sideburns are cut with a scissor-over-comb technique.

They have to be just right since the side burn area plays a key role in defining and tying together the entire look.

A Man’s Haircut With Balance & Symmetry

The long male layered haircut like Matthew’s is generally started at a central area of the head to establish balance and symmetry.  The center back of the head is a neutral position and the hair is often the thickest in this area.

By starting at the center back the barber or stylist is better able to establish control.

As in the case of Matthew, styling is kept natural with a center or long or short side part.  A lot depends upon the hair’s natural texture.

Creating Harmony With Natural Hair Texture, Type & Condition

When the haircut is created in harmony with the natural texture, type and condition of the hair.

This long layered silhouette provides textural movement and dimension.  The layers begin at nose level and progress to below-the-ear, collar-length or slightly below-the-collar.

The recession areas at the front hairline and crown are used as basic cut guidelines.

How To Style – Long Male Layered Hairstyle

Follow the steps below to style this hair cut:

1.  Wet wash detangled strands in lukewarm water with formula compatible with hair type, texture and condition.
2.  Rinse completely.
3.  Apply a rinse-out conditioner to the middle and ends of hair.  Focus product on sections requiring hydration.
4.  Detangle individual sections with a hair friendly wide toothed comb.
5.  Rinse completely.
6.  Finish with a cool to cold final rinse.
7.  Accordion squeeze down the length of the hair from roots to ends to remove excess water
8.  Blot with a clean cotton t-shirt or similar cloth.  Avoid rough towels.
9.  Remove 50% of the moisture
10.  Apply a styling cocktail which includes, but isn’t limited to a leave-in conditioner, styling lotion, gel or glaze-like
product.
11.  Use your fingers to scrunch hair to emphasize natural texture or take individual curls and twist them into ringlets.
12.  Let hair air dry completely.
13.  For a more tousled look use fingers to light rake through hair or bend over at the waist and lightly shake strands.
14.  Optionally you can use a paddle brush and a blow dryer to create loose movement.

Or use a long finger diffuser attached to a blow dryer.

If possible, blow dry on the slowest, coolest setting  to minimize damage to strands.

Summary – Long Male Layered

This long male layered haircut showcased in various lengths and stages of tousle by Matthew Gray Gubler is very popular for men with medium to thick hair which is naturally textured.

It can be worn edgy or finished for a more professional look.

Unfortunately this cut and style is not ideal for all hair types, textures and conditions, but it can be modified to work with all different face shapes.

It would not work well for certain thinning conditions.  Work with a skilled barber or stylist to get the best cut possible customized for you.

Long hair on men is gaining ground and has become very popular.  This is an ideal cut and style for any male who wants to grow their hair longer into a ponytail stage or below the shoulders.

Don’t be surprised to see this longer male cut and hairstyle showing up on more super hero on TV and in the movies in the upcoming months.

Do You Have Frump-Factor Hair?

It’s a serious hair issue to consider.  Do you have frump-factor hair?

Liz Lemon of NBC’s 30 Rock had bona fide frump-factor hair.

Ironically, Tina Fey has naturally good hair according to hairstylist Ann Minahan in the April 2010 issue of TV Guide.

The brunette superstar who’s just launched NBC’s “Great News,”understood the importance of being believable as the super stressed Ms. Lemon.

Tina had to suffer for her art to properly portray the aggressively unkempt entertainment executive on the small screen.

Ms. Minahan, owner of NYC’s Riah Salon, told TV Guide “forcing locks to look like that (Lemon’s messy frump-factor hair) is no small feat.”

In fact “it’s as labor-intensive to get that (messy mane) result as it is to do good hair!”

Why did 30 Rock portray Liz Lemon as the Queen Of Frump-Factor Hair?

Because Tina had to look realistic as workaholic low maintenance Liz Lemon, Ms. Minahan had to make sure her hair appeared frumpy and dumpy.

Ms. Minahan confirmed Liz Lemon characters were alive and well off screen.  She often had frazzled female entertainment executives slumped over in her chair fighting messy manes.

High pressure jobs can leave little time for visits to the salon to create picture perfect strands.

Trying To Pinpoint What Constitutes The Frump-Factor

Bad hair is considered by many experts to be one of the strongest contributors to the frump-factor.

The frump-factor can be fleeting.  Some people can wear a dated hairstyle with flat curls, shapeless texture and misshapen layers and still look sizzling hot.

Others can have just one of the hair frump-factors and look like a major hair disaster.
Sometimes it’s hard to  exactly pinpoint where frump starts and ends.

Yes, it’s true, frump on one person can be cool on another.

Common Causes Of Frumpy Hair

Listed below are some of the most common causes of frumpy hair:

Max Black (Kat Dennings) - 2 BROKE GIRLS, Thursday, May 5 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Photo: Monty Brinton/CBS ©2016 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved

1.  A dated hairstyle
2.  Bad hair color
3.  Faded, dull, drab, flat hair color
4.  Overgrown roots
5.  Frizzy, fuzzy, chemically over-processed
6.  Dry, brittle strands
7.  Scraggly, split end
8.  Flat curls, shapeless texture, misshapen layers
9.  Unmanageable length, volume or overall shape

Even pulling hair up into a raggedy ponytail or misshaped bun can give hair an instant frump-factor.

Dated Hair Accessories

Hiding frumpy hair under unfashionable or dated hair accessories can only make the situation worse.

It’s not necessarily the accessory, but more likely how it’s been attached to the hair or what it’s been paired with.

Some hair accessories are timeless, but when attached to frumpy hair the accessory can inherit the frump-factor.

Summary – Do You Have Frump-Factor Hair?

Flat hair with zero style might hint of the frump-factor, but there’s always hope at the nearest salon.  A great hairstyle and color can make the world of difference.  The challenge?  Harried people with high pressure jobs, families or other responsibilities may not have the time necessary to get hair shaped up.
