Curly Hair Styling – Scrunching Curls With Diffuser For Abundant Tight Ringlets

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

One of the goals of using a diffuser is to help form abundant tight ringlets, coils and curls.  One of the biggest problems with creating bouncy curls is that sometimes the hair at the roots will go flat.

I have discussed this challenge with curly hair gurus Robert Hallowell and Barbara Lhotan.  They both use a range of methods but recommend diffuser scrunching as a good option.

Follow the steps below to scrunch curls with a long finger diffuser:

One method to combat flat roots which can be the bane of well formed ringlets is to actually scrunch tresses with a long finger diffuser.

1.  Separate pre-cleansed, damp naturally curly, wavy or permed hair into individual sections.  Remember, the smaller the sections, the tighter the ringlets which will be form.

If you have a special routine that includes applying a special curl friendly styling cocktail to wet strands and towel plopping, be sure to follow your normal routine before using the long finger diffuser.  Make sure strands are not dripping wet.  The key is to separate curls into even sections and then work on one section at a time.

2.  Position the long finger diffuser so that it’s flush or adjacent with the scalp and scrunch up the target section of hair in the diffuser bowl.

3.  Turn the dryer on to a low heat setting.  If your hair takes a long time to dry you can even experiment with medium heat, but high heat is not advised as it may damage the scalp.

Some fans of this technique prefer to dry their strands on the cool or cool shot setting.  It’s also best to use a low or medium speed rather than a high speed since the goal is to avoid blowing the curls around with air from the dryer. (more…)

Ten Ways To Have Chic Hairstyles On The Cheap

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

When money is tight the aesthetically inspired never give up on having chic hairstyles.  Even regular visits to the hairstylist are no longer on the budget there are still many options to have stunning tresses.

It was during World War II when women couldn’t afford professional salon visits that home perms, relaxers and hair color kits exploded.  During that time women also drew seams on their bare legs with black eyebrow pencils to simulate seamed stockings and figured out all types of treatments to look glam with little or no cost.

A Chic Hairstyle On The Cheap

Economic doom and gloom is the mother of hairstyle and beauty invention. Listed below are ten ways to have a chic hairstyle on the cheap:

1.  Shop at flea markets or similar locations for vintage silk scarves.  Wear them as glam hair accessories.  A beautiful scarf wrapped around the hairline or a few inches back and tied in a beautiful bow on one side can make any hairstyle look gorgeous and updated.  Or roll your scarf to form a faux headband.
2.  Combine big sparkly earrings with a sleek pulled back pony, twist or bun.  Earrings instantly draw attention to your tresses giving them an amped up look.  Even if your hair is short, stunning earrings will make any hairstyle look fabulous.
3.  Invest in a hand crafted beret, fedora or similar.  Not only are you supporting the local community and stimulating the economy, you’ll showcase your hairstyle in a new light with your edgy head wear. (more…)

Canopy Hair Definitions

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Canopy hair is just another name for the top layer of the hair.   Hair aficionados who love to chat about growing their hair, having long hair or dealing with naturally textured hair (wavy, curly, kinky, coily) love to create new descriptive terms.

Canopy Hair Is The Very Top Layer Or Hair

Just as a traditional canopy is an overhead roof or some type of structure over which a fabric or metal covering is attached, canopy hair is the very top layer that covers the rest of the hair.

Canopy hair is the part of the hair which is most vulnerable to environmental toxins such as wind, heat, sun, rain, salt, sand or similar hair enemies.

Canopy hair will also suffer the most damage from chemical hair treatments such as relaxers, straighteners, hair color or similar.   Natural or added color will often fade the fastest from canopy hair and when hair starts to thin it will often fall from the canopy area of the hair first.

When Canopy hair is damaged it’s most likely to break, split or result in frizz, fuzz or other misbehaving hair behaviors. (more…)

Sleeping On Natural Curls, Waves Or Textured Tresses

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

If you have naturally curly, wavy, kinky or textured hair you may wish extend that great first cleanse day into several days.

When you want your naturally textured hair to look great on follow-up days there are many tricks you can use to avoid frizz, fuzz or frumpy tresses.

One important key to extending your first day hairstyle is how you sleep on your hair.  Obviously if you’re in bed for 6-8 hours your hair will take the brunt of your sleep cycle.

This is especially true if you toss and turn in your sleep which can wreck havoc on some textured tresses.

How do you sleep on your hair? Although not all methods work for all types of natural curls, waves, kinks, coils or ringlets, they might work for you.  Be willing to experiment or modify the suggested tips to find what works best for you.

Listed below are some options known to help extend the life of natural textured hair after the first day:

1. Sleep on satin, silk or other hair friendly fabric.
Keep in mind that cotton or other scratchy pillowcases or bed clothes may agitate delicate curls, waves, kinks or other similar textures and actually dry out the hair causing frizz. (more…)

Curly Haircut Value

Introduction

The value of a good ‘curly’ cut can’t be measured by cost, convenience or loyalty to your stylist.

If you’re blessed with any type of  curl  or textured pattern and your hair is not properly cut, you won’t be able to manage your locks.  Visit salons in your area and inquire as to who cuts curly hair.

I promise you not one stylist will tell you they don’t know how to cut texture.  Nor will they be overly willing to recommend someone else. How could this be?  Because they really believe they can cut curly or textured strands.

Tresses Are Part Of Your Everyday Wardrobe

Hair is part of your wardrobe that you wear every day. Some girls will spend money on clothes, shoes, dinners out and shriek at the price of a great cut.  The perfect cut for you is easy for a stylist who is trained and understands your hair.  Not to mention that you only need 3 or four cuts a year.
