How Nanosized Particles May Affect Skin Care Products

How Nanosized Particles May Affect Skin Care Products

The rapidly growing field of nanotechnology and its future use in cosmetic products holds both enormous potential and potential concern for consumers. Currently, major cosmetic manufacturers have imposed a voluntary ban on the use of nano-particles in products while they await a ruling from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the safety of this technology.

However, these manufacturers know that when ingredients in products such as sunscreens and anti-aging products are converted into nano-sized particles, the end product displays unique properties that can benefit the skin in ways that otherwise could not be achieved using larger-sized particles.

Speaking at a past Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), dermatologist Adnan Nasir, MD, PhD, FAAD, clinical assistant professor in the department of dermatology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, presented an overview of nanotechnology and how nano-particles may eventually be used in cosmetic products.

“Research in the area of nanotechnology has increased significantly over the years, and I think there will be considerable growth in this area in the near future,” said Dr. Nasir. “The challenge is that a standard has not been set yet to evaluate the safety and efficacy of topical products that contain nanosized particles.” (more…)

“EMPRESS expresses the power of beauty and power of all women. While there are many ladies out there who embody the essence of my new women’s fragrance, I think Kelly Rowland is a perfect example of a modern day Empress.

With her incredible talent and beauty, she has helped and will continue to help me spread the word about my newest signature fragrance,” says Combs.

“I decided to be an Empress Ambassador because I stand behind the notion of what the fragrance represents,” says Rowland. “We are starting a movement with Empress! Every woman is beautiful, powerful in her own right.” (more…)

How To Prepare Your Skin For Fall

How To Prepare Your Skin For Fall

Now that Labor Day is here it’s time to transition your skin care needs from Summer to Fall.

While it’s important to continue to protect your skin all year-round with a broad spectrum sun screen, you should also consider other methods of preparing your skin for post-summer needs.

Listed below are some options to consider:

1. Indulge In A Fall Facial

Whether you Do It Yourself (DIY) at home or visit your favorite spa, it’s always great to start a new season with a clean slate.  Your skin will appreciate some tender loving care (TLC) after a long hot drying summer.  Opt for a soothing and moisturizing facial to create a healthy glow and an inner calm.

Your facial whether done at home or by a professional should ideally incorporate the following steps:

A.  Pre-Cleanse – Remove make-up and rinse in lukewarm water.
B.  Cleanse – Apply desired cleanser tied to your skin type and current needs.
C.  Rinse – After cleansing, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. (more…)

Reports Of Five More Patients Allegedly Blinded By Eye Drug Avastin

LOS ANGELES– The New York Times has reported that five more patients who were allegedly being treated for eye disease with the drug Avastin have been blinded.  This report was made according to one of the patients and medical professionals.

The latest cases of Avastin allegedly occurred last month at the Veterans Affairs medical center in Los Angeles.

Late Thursday, the Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed that the problem had occurred and said that an investigation into the matter was continuing.

Made by Genentech, Avastin is a cancer drug that is commonly used to treat the wet form of age-related macular degeneration.

It’s also utilized to treat other eye diseases because it costs only about $50 an injection.  The low cost of the treatments saves Medicare and patients hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

This is compared with using Lucentis, a somewhat similar Genentech drug which is approved for the treatment of eye diseases, but costs about $2,000 an injection.

Elie Saab Debuts First Fragrance For Fall 2011

Elie Saab Debuts First Fragrance For Fall 2011

This fall, famed Lebanese couturier Elie Saab reveals his first fragrance for women – ELIE SAAB Le Parfum. Created in partnership with Beauté Prestige International, the Paris-based subsidiary of Shiseido Co. Ltd., ELIE SAAB Le Parfum celebrates the splendor and brilliance of the radiant femininity which has always inspired him.

Born in Beirut in 1964 to a family with no ties to fashion, he dreamt only of escaping to fantastical faraway lands.

He was not yet nine when he created his first dress for his younger sister. The name Elie Saab soon became synonymous with dresses of incredible grace and femininity. At 18, Elie Saab opened his own couture house with more than a dozen seamstresses.

Following his first Beirut catwalk show, the country’s golden boy won over the Middle Eastern market, and its wealthy clientele became his faithful followers.

Today, his renown shines from Beirut to Los Angeles via Paris’s Golden Triangle where he opened a boutique off the Champs-Elysées in 2007.

Couture is the raison d’être of the ELIE SAAB fashion house, a passion that has driven the designer for more than 25 years. Naturally instinctual, Elie Saab has an innate sense of cut. He creates directly on the female form, draping fabric on the body without drawing and without patterns. (more…)
