LA Makeup Maven Juliana Landis’ Secrets To Glam Hollywood Make-up

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Oscar was in town last week and there is no way to miss that big golden man with the amount of star studded events invading LA.

KTLA reporter, Lu Parker got glam for the Hollywood Reporter Big 10 party with a visit to LA makeup maven, expert Juliana Landis at her private brow and lash studio.

Using some of this season hottest makeup must-haves…Juliana gave Lu Parker a gorgeous glow to her beautiful soft skin making her look fabulous on the red carpet!

Listed below are some of Juliana’s insider tips on how you can also achieve this look:

She wanted to give Lu a dewy look and used her favorite foundation Face Atelier Ultra, which is silicone based and sits beautifully on the skin and giving the affect of a soft dewy glow.

Next Landis used a small amount of Mac Studio Sculpt concealer around the eyes, nose and mouth and used Mac’s Mineralize Skin Finish in a dark golden color as a bronzer just on the forehead on the cheeks down the nose and on the jaw line. (more…)

Natalie Portman’s 2011 Oscar Make-up Secrets

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

On Oscar night, we saw Natalie Portman looking stunning in a deep purple Rodarte dress, which from the looks we saw on the carpet it will definitely be a standout color for the Spring season.

The Oscar winner’s complexion was naturally glowing as a mommy to be and her makeup was soft and pretty to highlight that.  Get the lovely Natalie’s gorgeous make-up at home with simple tips from LA-based makeup connoisseur Juliana Landis.

To re-create this look start with a primer and a light tinted moisturizer, lightly conceal around the eyes nose and mouth and use a setting powder such as Mac’s Mineralize, to help set the makeup for the evening.

Use a neutral shade all over from the lid to brow with a slight purple hue such as Mac’s Yogurt would be a great color, follow with a softer lilac color all over the lid such as Glomineral’s lilac and Mac’s Parfait Armour in the crease and to line the eyes for a slight smokey look, use a big fluffy brush to blend and finish with a waterproof mascara just incase you weep.

Use Nars Orgasm on the apples of the cheeks to accentuate the glowing skin and a beautiful peachy gloss.

NCIS’ Pauley Perrette’s Big Bang Hairstyle Theory

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Pauley Perrete plays Abby the adorable brainy lab technie on the beloved NCIS every week on CBS.  When Pauley is onscreen as Abby she rocks thick eye-grazing bangs with a few longer face-framing pieces of hair which blend into her trademark high pig tails.

Pauly’s bangs look best when they’re sharp, precise and kept at the proper position along the forehead.  Too short and they look dorky, too long and you can’t see Pauley’s gorgeous eyes.

(Image of Pauley Perrette and Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory – Comic-Con 2010, July 22, San Diego, CA – All Rights Reserved)

Big bangs like Abby wears don’t work for all face shapes, hair types or hair textures.  Someone with naturally curly, wavy or textured tresses may only be able to achieve blunt across-the-forehead bangs like Abby with the popular clip-on bangs.

Of course someone with natural curls can achieve a version of bangs by having a fringe cut that literally extends below their chin to allow for natural curl shrinkage.  Wavy hair can be tamed into a fringe (I know, I have this type of hair) with a paddle or round brush and a blow dryer. (more…)

Simple DIY Masks To Fight Wrinkles And Fine Lines

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Mask #1

This mask is designed to soften facial and neck lines.  Cleanse your face with a pure natural oil,  such as almond, sesame or olive. Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry. If you prefer, you can use your favorite facial cleanser.

Instructions

Prick a Vitamin E gel cap with a pin to open.  Squeeze the contents of the Vitamin E gel into a clean bowl or cup.  Use a fork to mix the Vitamin E gel with the yolk of an egg.  If possible, use an organic or free range egg.   Use clean fingertips, cotton swabs or balls to apply to the face.  Be sure to avoid the mouth in order not to swallow any of the raw egg mixture.  Also, be sure to wash your fingers with hot water and soap after you have applied the mask.

Apply to the face, especially on the lines around the eyes and any facial laugh lines.  You can also apply the mask to any lines on the neck.  Leave the mask on for at least 15 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.  Pat dry with a clean soft towel.

Do this once a week for several weeks to see a change.

Mask #2

This mask is designed to smooth out fine lines.  Before you start clean face with lukewarm water and the oil of your choice.  If you prefer, you can use your favorite facial cleanser.

Instructions

Dip 2-4 all natural chamomile tea bags (available at health food stores or online) in filtered or bottled boiling water.  Make the tea just as you would as if you were going to drink it.  Allow the tea bags to cool and then squeeze out excess water.

Lie down and apply the cooled tea bags to the eye area.  You may wish to lay a clean towel on your face to catch excess drips.   Allow the tea bags to remain on eyes for 30 to 60 minutes.

Mask #3

Cleanse your face with a pure natural oil,  such as almond, sesame or olive to remove any dirt or grim. Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Instructions

Grate a medium raw potato and mix it with two tablespoons of sour cream.  Apply as a mask, leave on for 20 minutes.  Wash off with cool water.  Do this once a week for very best results.

Right Makeup For Your Hair Color – Transitioning From Brunette To Red

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Khloe Kardashian captured the attention of the news media with sizzling hot red tresses at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards.  Although she kept her signature long flowing tresses, her new hair color was a big departure from her normal chocolate brown strands.

While it’s true changing your hair color is a fabulous way to freshen up your look, if you want to amp up the results you’ll need to tweak your makeup too.

When you migrate from a chocolate brown to a deep red it’s important to make sure the undertones in your hair works in harmony with your cosmetics  rather than work against them.

If your new red hair color has a lot of auburn in it then consider ditching cool shades and opt for warmer make-up hues.

What are the right shades?  It really needs to be a personal choice but some make-up experts might suggest hues in the soft gray, champagne, tawny or milk chocolate ranges.  This suggestion would be especially true for the eyes.

Softer warmer shades are also suggested for the lips.  Bright red lipsticks might not work as well with red hair colors than brunette because of the potential for a clash with the hair color.  When in doubt mauve y browns and nudes are good choices,  For a pop of color opt for a pale pink. (more…)

Easy Tricks For Removing Waterproof Eye Makeup

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

While I love the smudge proof benefits of waterproof eyeliner and mascara sometimes they’re challenging to remove without elbow grease.

A make-up guru suggested layering would afford me a much easier time removing my waterproof make-up.  She suggested applying my waterproof eyeliner and mascara on top of a traditional non-waterproof version.

I was amazed by the results. By following a double coating technique I enjoyed the stay-put liner and smudge free lush lashes the sealers provide, but the under layers made it much easier to remove because the first coat prevents the sealants from adhering directly to my lids and lashes.  Thus any eye irritation from excessive scrubbing is gone forever.

I’m always amazed at how a few simple tricks can always make hair and make-up application and removal a breeze.

Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner Lives Up To Its Stay Put Reputation

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

It all started recently when I had a complete make-over at the Fresh Boutique in North Park Mall in North Dallas.

After emerging from the mall with perfectly applied eyeliner, shadow and a yummy Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, I felt all shiny and new.  My long lost obsession with cosmetics was reawakened.

[amazon-product text=”Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment” type=”text”]B003SDGKDW[/amazon-product]  As soon as I got home with my new face I decided to send my longtime esthetican a Facebook message booking an oxygen facial for my neglected skin.

Fresh Dewy Skin Courtesy Of Sophia Stavron & Karin Herzog

Once my skin was all plumped and supremely oxygenated thanks to the amazing talents of Sophia Stavron (972-804-0408) and Karin Herzog, I started playing with my new make-up.  Of course I wasn’t satisfied with the single eyeliner I had purchased from Fresh.  Oh no, I wanted to play with a variety of eyeliners.

Digging through my make-up files I found a Beauty Reporter from the March 2006 issue of Allure.  Ranking the five best eyeliners, Revlon ColorStay came in at the top of the list, especially in black.  Although I usually prefer brown or burgundy, I decided to experiment with the black.

Crayon Versus Pencil Eyeliner

After the black Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner arrived from Amazon.com I put it through the paces.  Ironically, the better I became at applying the crayon style self-sharpening roll-up eyeliner, the more I realized I had to work on my shadowing skills to match my great eyeliner, which is a blog for another day.  I also realized that I liked a crayon much better than pencil liners.

The ColorStay waterproof eyeliner which comes in a 1 oz tube ($6.99) is famous for providing extended wear up to 16 hours.  Indeed, once I managed to apply this famously popular eyeliner, it didn’t smear, smudge or fade from the time I applied it at 9 am until I removed it at 9 pm the same day.    I love the creamy texture too.

As advertised, it doesn’t budge for hours.  In fact, I found it to be a bit of a challenge to remove it.   Ultimately I had to use make-up remover to eliminate it from my eyes.

No Danger Of Raccoon Eyes

I’ve read various reviews which said the liner can create raccoon eyes on oily skin but I didn’t experience this problem since my own skin is medium to slightly dry.

I noticed the eyeliner appears to smear a tiny bit if I place it near the outside of my lids.  I generally don’t extend my eyeliner past the edge of my eyes so it’s not an issue.

After playing with the Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner for a few weeks I am totally loving it.  It’s a great product available at a great price and can be purchased at your favorite drugstore or online from Amazon.com.

[amazon-product text=”Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner” type=”text”]B001P2NZH2[/amazon-product]

With a little practice I have learned to apply it exactly the way I like and it has a cool little sharpener for a finer point.  It’s true to its name, it really does stay all day and it makes my eyes pop.   No wonder it made Allure’s list of best eyeliners.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner life can become so busy and crazy it can zap even the best energy reserves. When life gets hectic consider incorporating some of the following energy boosting tricks:

1. Start the day with an energy infused shower. Select a peppermint enriched body wash, gel, lotion or hair cream to start your day with a natural boost.

Peppermint’s powerful aroma has been proven to activate an area in the brain that controls alertness.

Consider finishing your shower with a quick blast of cool or cold water which naturally amps up your circulation and makes you feel instantly invigorated.

2. Take the time to start every day with a healthy breakfast. While you might be tempted to grab a quick donut or other high fat food, opt for fiber rich foods which balance your blood sugar and give you balanced energy. (more…)
