Eyebrow Haircolor 101

An age-old question about going blonde is whether or not you should match your eyebrows to your hair.  Unfortunately when the hair and brows match there result can be rather strange looking.

Yes, you can easily lighten your brows at home by using Jolen Cream Bleach, but should you?  Maybe not.  Home bleached brows tend to take on a brassy look.  Overly lightened brows may completely fade into your skin.

According to Damone Roberts, who has shaped brows for beauties ranging from Madonna to Mandy Moore “eyebrows frame the face;  if they’re really light, you can’t see them-it looks unnatural.”

Most beauty experts still rank too-light eyebrows as a beauty blunder.  It can leave even the most gorgeous looking women look like they’re from an alien race or have superpowers like Jessica Alba did in Fantastic Four.

In fact, when Jessica Alba went through her blonde hair period back in 2005-2006, she tried out a variety of eyebrows ranging from platinum blonde to a more balanced golden blonde.  (more…)

Hot New Make-up Trends For Spring 2011

Makeup Trends For Spring 2011

Bobbi Thomas was on the Friday, April 1st Today Show (on NBC) talking about the latest make-up trends for Spring 2011.  Bobbi pointed out that everyone is so anxious for Spring to kick in that they are pulling out big, bold colors to kick it off.

Bobbi noted that for Spring 2011 make-up is all about color.   Big, bold, color.  Bobbie showed off all the latest cosmetics including:

Eye Shadow

Although it may seem a tad scary, blue eye shadow is back and it’s big.  Bobbi pointed out the best blue eye shadows are in the wet/dry version available from YSL, Elf or Maybelline, to name a few.

Wet/dry is best because it means you can apply it either wet or dry, but it prevents too much color transfer or powder flying everywhere.  It definitely provides more control over traditional eye shadows that are not wet/dry.  Not only will you not over apply color but you can mix better with wet/dry formulations. The Top 5 “Lash Looks” for Spring

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

When it comes to looking good, many women believe their most important asset is their eyes. Eyelashes have long been considered an indicator of beauty, so it is no surprise that classic beauty Elizabeth Taylor was recently revealed to have a genetic mutation that gave her lush, thick eyelashes naturally.

Since we all can’t grow our own second row of eyelashes, Barbara Rattigan, founder of Shavasana Eyelash Extensions, has the next best option: natural-looking eyelash extensions. According to Barbara, “adding volume to your lashes with extensions can create a beautiful, natural look.”

Barbara notes that eyelash extensions commonly mistaken as a “one size fits all” service, which is not the case at all. “Adding eyelashes can create a wide variety of looks and styles,” says Barbara. Below; she has shared her top five favorite “Lash Looks” for spring and how to obtain them with eyelash extensions.

Barely-there lashes for the “fresh faced” look

Barbara says, “this is my favorite look, because it’s for the woman that doesn’t want a lot of fuss, doesn’t wear a lot of make-up, but wants to feel beautiful when she walks out the door every day.” To achieve subtle, long lashes that appear natural but give a boost to your everyday look, Barbara suggests a very thin lash that is identical to your natural look, but slightly longer.

“Chocolate brown lashes are a great way to really soften the face if you don’t want to appear harsh,” says Barbara, “people shouldn’t know you are wearing extensions – they should just know you look great, but can’t figure out what ‘it’ is!” (more…)

Sarah Steele Lets Her Natural Curls Shine In The Good Wife

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

In a previous blog I shared that one of my guilty pleasures is the film “Spanglish” which was released in 2004.

Although the critics panned it, I love the film and all the various actors including Sarah Jane Steele (born July 24, 1988) who plays Bernice, Sandler’s awkward teen-aged daughter.

Sarah beat out thousands of young hopeful females to win the role.  She was fabulous as the lovable teen dealing with her mother’s constant lack of approval due to her weight, frizzy curly hair and overall appearance.

Her mother, Deborah, played by Tea Leoni was blonde, beautiful, athletic and reed thin.  She also had long, bone straight tresses, which were always perfectly coiffed.

Much to her mother’s disappointment Bernie physically and emotionally takes after her father, John who has bushy natural curls, full eyebrows and a healthy weight.  Sarah Steele was spectacular in the role.  Every time I see the movie I want to reach through the screen and give her a hug. (more…)

No Hair Role Made Malin Akerman Question Growing Up Without Hair

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Swedish actress Malin Akerman is famous for her beautiful blonde tresses and her role as the annoying sister in 27 Dresses.  Her latest role as Annie in the film ‘Happythankyoumoreplease’ deals with issues of being completely hairless.  In the film Annie has alopecia.  The movie is about six friends living in New York and dealing with a child separated from his mom on the subway.

“I actually think she’s way more beautiful than any of the other girls I’ve played,” Akerman tells PopEater. “When you look in the mirror you see somebody very different from whatever everybody else sees, and that is the same for me.”

Akerman expressed appreciation for the role.  She told PopEater I’m in love with this character. I actually miss her a lot. She was actually an amazing character to play.  She’s obviously a very sensitive soul, wears her heart on her sleeve.”

Akerman explained “She (Annie) has alopecia, which is a condition where you lose all your hair. It creates a different kind of persona in a person. Growing up without hair, it must shape you as a person, and that was something really interesting to play with and figure out what her sensitive spots are because of that, what obstacles that presents. It was such a great, beautiful character.” (more…)

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Estée Lauder is a cosmetics giant with a history spanning 60 years and through 135 countries.  The company recently introduced its beauty products in India.  The beauty business was founded in 1946 by Estée Lauder with just four products.  Now the products are sold in 18,000 doors.

Mumbai was the first location for the Estée Lauder company-owned store in India, followed by one in Bangalore and two in Delhi.

Estée Lauder also planned to open the freestanding Delhi stores in Promenand and the other in Courtyard Malls.   Over the next three years, the company planned to open 20 locations and expand into cities including Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata.

In its second quarter results, Estee Lauder reported sales of $2.31 billion on the back of strong performances in the emerging markets. In particular, the company highlighted the Asia Pacific region and China where most of its brands sold out during the period and sales reached $347.4 million. (more…)

Hilary Duff Showcases Natural Beauty By Appearing Out In LA Without Make-up

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Beautiful blonde actress Hilary Duff was caught by photographers  having breakfast with her mom in the LA area on Tuesday, June 17th.  Proving how gorgeous she is, Hilary was photographed without make-up.  Her long shoulder-length wavy strands cascaded from a center part.

Duff was wearing sexy jean short, boots and an orange top which worked with her beautiful blonde hair.  Hilary and her mom, Susan Colleen stopped by the Papoos Hot Dog Stand in Toluca Lake.  After eating and running errands, the duo headed back home away from the always present paps.

Duff will appear in the film “Foodfight” which  is scheduled to be released  in August.  Duff recently told press she hopes to be more likely to be considered for more ‘serious’ roles as she portrayed in “War, Inc.”

L’Oreal Found Guilty Of Racial Discrimination And Fined After Trying To Exclude Non-White Women From Promoting Shampoo

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

In a landmark case, the Garnier division of the L’Oreal beauty empire, along with a recruitment agency it employed, were fined €30,000 (£20,300) each after they recruited women on the basis of race. The historic ruling – the first time a major company has been found guilty of systematic race discrimination in France – saw a senior figure at the agency given a three-month suspended prison sentence.

The French campaign group SOS Racisme brought the case against L’Oréal, the world’s largest cosmetics firm, over a campaign which was held in 2000. According to the case, Garnier France sought saleswomen to demonstrate the shampoo line Fructis Style in supermarkets outside Paris. The company sought young women to hand out samples and discuss hairstyling with shoppers.

In July 2000, a fax detailing the profile of hostesses sought by L’Oréal stipulated women should be 18 to 22, size 38-42 (UK size 10-14) and “BBR”, the initials for bleu, blanc, rouge, the colours of the French flag.

Prosecutors argued that BBR, a shorthand used by the far right, was also a well-known code among employers to mean “white” French people and not those of north African, African and Asian backgrounds.

Christine Cassan, a former employee at Districom, a communications firm acting for Garnier, told the court her clients demanded white hostesses. She said that when she had gone ahead and presented candidates “of colour” a superior in her own company had said she had “had enough of Christine and her Arabs”.

One woman working in the recruitment firm involved said foreign-sounding names or photos showing a candidate was of Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian or other African origin would ensure candidates were eliminated. Another said: “I once had a good woman candidate, but she was non-white. I had to ask someone to pretend that our list was full. It was hard.” (more…)

Beauty Experts’ Favorites, From Budget To Splurge

Beauty experts’ favorites, from budget to splurge

NEW YORK — Beauty products are personal: What works for one oily-skinned woman with brown eyes and thin hair might not work for her dry-skinned friend with blue eyes and thick, color-processed hair.

But some products have better batting averages. The editorial staffs of many magazines, their readers and an industry group called Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) try to navigate through the slew of new beauty products with awards and best-of lists.

Many of CEW’s winning products this year are multi-tasking, says the group’s president, Carlotta Jacobson.  The other undeniable movement in the beauty industry is all things green, Jacobson says.

Women’s Health magazine editor in chief Tina Johnson and beauty editor Liesa Goins say readers ask about the environment along with sensitive skin and acne. Goins notes that many of the products Women’s Health highlighted, with help from a panel of experts that included salon owners, makeup artists and dermatologists, were inexpensive standbys.

“I’m always surprised how many products you can find at the drugstore. We’re conditioned to think you have to spend a lot of money to get effective products,” she says.

Count Johnson as one of those drugstore fans: She has been a longtime user of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and also is a fan of Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 45 and RoC Retinol Correction Deep Wrinkle Night Cream. (more…)
