A natural curl hair flat top problem is one of the most common naturally textured hair problems.

The flat top problem, also known as the dreaded curly triangle often occurs when curls are arranged so that they sit too close to the scalp or the rest of the curls.

Flat tops and triangles aren't always as flattering as they could be.

Shalita Grant's Gorgeous Natural Hair Texture

Actress Shalita Grant who appears as Sonja Percy on NCIS:  New Orleans has gorgeous naturally texture hair.

The gorgeous Shalita wears her naturally textured hair redirected to the opposite side of her head to create fullness all across the top of the scalp.

She also alternates between no part, an angled part and reverse parting.  Shalita even utilizes an off-center part with the sides rolled on either side to create more volume and texture.

Ringlets With Volume And Spacing

When ringlets like Shalita's have more volume and are spaced looser, they create romantic voluminous spirals which flatter any age or face shape.

The flat tops and triangles often occur as the result of bad haircuts created at the hands of stylist not familiar with natural textures.

Causes Of Flat Hair Tops

Stylists not properly educated in how to create great haircuts for textured hair often mistakenly utilize thinning scissors to try and reduce extra bulk.  In the process of thinning natural textures, the curls lose their natural shape.

Even worse, the weight of the hair from the ears down, pulls the curls down, making them appear wider and flatter.

Even with the very best cut designed to enhance the shape and form of the natural curls, the weight of the hair may still pull it down slightly, giving the illusion of a wider, flatter top and/or part.

The best solution to address a flat top or triangle shape is to do the following:

1.  Work with a texture hair expert who can great a great basic cut custom designed for your specific hair.

2.  Wet wash your hair with your normal texture formula.

3.  Finish your wet wash process with a cool/cold final rinse.

4.  Blot excess liquid from your hair with a clean 100% t-shirt.

5.  Apply leave-in product cocktail.

6.  Avoid combing, brushing or turban drying which can pull out curls and make roots flat.

7.  Before plopping, air or diffuser dryer, create a part down the center on the opposite side of your head from the way you normally wear it.

8.  When your hair is almost dry for whatever process you deploy, reverse your part so that your hair falls on the side it normally does.  This move will help to build natural volume at the roots.

9.  Avoid straight parts.  Instead, angle your hair diagonally or create a zig-zag part.  This minimize the appearance of a flat top or part.  It also helps curls float up a bit higher.

Other Options To Prevent Flat Tops

Other options include, but aren't limited to the following:

1.  Detangle textured hair in the shower.

2.  After applying rinse out conditioner, use a hair-friendly wide tooth comb to gently work out any knots in your hair working from the bottom to the top.

Note:  Keep in mind hair is weaker when it’s wet.  Take care when detangling.  Don't pull at knots to avoid breaking your hair.

3.  Utilize your fingers to detangle and shape. When you need to detangle knots from dry hair, spray the knot with a leave-in conditioner spray and use your fingertips to smooth out tangles.

3.  Apply curl enhancing product to t-shirt blotted hair.  Diffuse dry with head bent over at the waist - upside down.

4.  Clip curls at the roots and allow them to dry with clipped support for more root lift.
