How To Prepare Your Skin For Fall

How To Prepare Your Skin For Fall

Now that Labor Day is here it’s time to transition your skin care needs from Summer to Fall.

While it’s important to continue to protect your skin all year-round with a broad spectrum sun screen, you should also consider other methods of preparing your skin for post-summer needs.

Listed below are some options to consider:

1. Indulge In A Fall Facial

Whether you Do It Yourself (DIY) at home or visit your favorite spa, it’s always great to start a new season with a clean slate.  Your skin will appreciate some tender loving care (TLC) after a long hot drying summer.  Opt for a soothing and moisturizing facial to create a healthy glow and an inner calm.

Your facial whether done at home or by a professional should ideally incorporate the following steps:

A.  Pre-Cleanse – Remove make-up and rinse in lukewarm water.

B.  Cleanse – Apply desired cleanser tied to your skin type and current needs.

C.  Rinse – After cleansing, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. D.  Apply Mask – Apply a facial based on your skin’s needs.  You may wish to moisturize dry skin, brighten a cull complexion or eliminate impurities. After mask is applied lay down and chillax for 20-30 minutes.  If you wish, apply a clean warm washcloth infused with a few drops of lavender to the top of your forehead for ultimate relaxation.

E.  Rinse mask off face with lukewarm water.

F.  Pat skin dry with a soft towel.

G.  Apply eye cream and moisturizing formula.

2.  Switch From A Light To A Heavier Moisture Switch from a light moisturizer to one that provides thicker moisture to combat Fall and Winter winds and cooler temps.  Be sure to follow your normal skin care regimes such as applying eye creams, but amp up the amount to make sure your skin is receiving extra special seasonal transition care.

3.  Transition Your Daily And Evening Scents While summertime is perfect for light fresh scents Fall calls for a richer, deeper, spicier scent.

4.  Transition To Consistent Exfoliation While exfoliation may not be necessary during the height of Summer, once Fall turns the corner it’s important to start using a good scrub on a consistent basis.

5.  Investigate Microdermabrasion If your skin has more serious needs due to a punishing summer you may wish to visit your favorite spa and have a series of microdermabrasion treatments.

Microdermabrasion is non-invasive, but the results are immediate.  When performed properly it will exfoliate dead cells from the skin’s surface resulting in soft and vibrantly refresed skin.  It can also help to treat scars, aging skin and enlarged pores.

6.  Post Summer Chemical Peels A chemical peel is obviously a more serious transition strategy, but  they can produce dramatic results when dealing with sun exposure damage, accelerated aging or other skin damaging lifestyle factors.

Depending on the type of peel you chose, it may include alpha and/or beta hydroxyl acids. A chemical peel requires application by a skin care professional.

There are several different types of chemical peels, but all are virtually painless when applied by an expert technician. One popular Fall peel is a gentle glycolic treatment which is virtually pain free but will help to remove summer damage in one treatment.  It’s also possible to book a series of treatments for deeper treatments.

7.  Sun Spot Removal Some spas and plastic surgeons offer specific treatments for the removal of sun spots, freckles and pigment lesions.  These types of treatments can be performed on any part of the skin on the body.

The most popular treatment options include the face, chest, shoulders, hands and arms.  Some spas will require that you allow any tan you may have to completely fade before having treatments.

8.  Airbrush Tanning If you wish to hold onto your summer glow than you may wish to also have an airbrush tan as Summer  transitions to Fall.  Ask for a custom blend which can be mixed to work with your current tan and transition you seamlessly into the Fall season.

Airbrush tanning is most often performed in a spa and exfoliation prior to the airbrushing is always required.

Summary

Don’t forget to adjust your make-up palette after you’ve prepared your skin for Fall.  This includes transitioning from light and bright eyes and lips to a Fall worthy look.
