Hair Transplant Surgeon Warns Against Hasty Surgeries

Hair Transplant Surgeon Warns Against Hasty Surgeries

The BBC has highlighted concerns by a top surgeon regarding the fact that young men who start losing their hair shouldn’t immediately sign up for hair transplant surgery.

Dr. Bessam Farjo, is one of the UK’s leading hair transplant surgeons. In a recent interview with The BBC’s Newsbeat, he cautioned that some hair transplant clinics are not doing enough to warn people under 30 about the long-term risks of hair transplant operations.

Although Dr. Farjo reports he has had inquiries from men as young as 19, he personally doe not recommend hair transplants for those under the age of 25. Why? It may not be the best first course of action for someone losing their hair.

In fact, even though he makes his living as a hair transplant surgeon, he warns people not to have surgery until they are closer to the age of 30. Why? Dr. Farjo warns that if you get surgery too young, it can look worse than it did in the first place.

Unfortunately when celebrities like footballer Wayne Rooney get the procedure done and openly discuss it with the media, it becomes a much more popular option. It may not be the best option but it certainly becomes more well-known due to the celebrity factor.

When Rooney had a hair transplant in June of 2011, the 25 year old sports celebrity was willing to talk about it and show photos of the results.

Exhaust All Other Hair Loss Transplants Before Surgery

Dr. Farjo believes in exhausting all other avenues before taking the hair transplant surgery plunge. He notes that he asks questions about his hair loss patient’s family history.

The doctor has his patients record their hair loss and monitor it over a set period of time. He also offers medications to see if the hair loss will stop or at least slow down. The doctor’s goal is to preserve as much of the current hair and prevent it from falling before taking the ultimate plunge with surgery.

Influence Of Wayne Rooney Over Transplant Surgery Trends

When discussing the recent transplant surgery of Wayne Rooney the doctor said “When a celebrity comes out with it, you only hear the good things,” he said. “You don’t hear the cautions or the potential complications.”

He noted “If you have the surgery too early and you go bald, you don’t have enough hair to keep chasing the hair loss. You can end up with isolated patches of hair. You could end up with hairy temples and a bald forehead which isn’t pretty but is also hard to fix.”

By taking time and understanding a patient’s hair loss history and patterns Dr. Farjo notes that “I am (then) able to have a much fuller picture of how much hair they will lose.”

Hair Transplant Surgery Is Best After Age Of 25

The BBC Newsbeat spoke to 16 other hair transplant surgeons besides Dr. Farjo and 13 agree that they were not eager to operate on men under the age of 25.

Male baldness can start in the late teens. According to The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery baldness affects a quarter of men in their 20s.

There were more than 33,000 hair transplant operations in Europe last year.

No Medical Code Of Conduct

Unfortunately there is no code of conduct or regulation to force hair transplant surgeons to stick to a minimum age. Due to the enhanced public awareness of Wayne Rooney’s hair transplantation surgery at age 23, more people are pursuing this option at earlier and earlier ages.

Other surgeons have told BBC’s Newsbeat that there should be a regulatory body to stop abuses in the industry. The surgeons want to make sure hair loss clinics give people the best possible advice and treatment.

Dr Farjo, who runs the The Farjo Medical Centre, admits there’s no concrete way to stop some clinics putting money before the well being of patients. He believes hair transplant surgeons should work together to educate each other and their patients about risks.

Hollywood’s Most Expensive Engagement Rings

Hollywood’s Most Expensive Engagement Rings

Beyonce recently announced her pregnancy at the 2011 VMA’s by unbuttoning her jacket and flashing her baby bump. The pop star is used to flashing her treasures. When she got engaged to celebrity rapper Jay-Z she was flashing something else, her 18-carat flawless diamond sparkler which reportedly is valued at $5 million.

Although Kim Kardashian’s $2 million dollar engagement ring weighs in at 20.5 carats, it doesn’t hold a candle to Beyonce’s stunner.

Of course Beyonce is married to a rapper supposedly worth $940 million dollars or more. Being such a high profile rapper, Jay-Z was required to show up all the competition by popping for one of the most expensive engagement rings in the Hollywood set.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s engagement ring which she received from hubby Will Smith weighed in around 12 carats although it’s value isn’t well-known.

Other big Hollywood sparklers?

1. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – Her 40-carat diamond ring from Aristotle Onassis auctioned for 2.6 Million dollars in 1996 made it one of the most expensive engagement rings in history. Just imagine what it would be worth in 2011. (more…)

Vienna Girardi And Bachelor Pad Ladies Showcase Chunky Braids

While various types of chunky braids have been hot for years now, check out how these Bachelor Pad women who recently put their own twist on the popular hairstyle trend while competing for love and money on ABC’s Reality TV show.

Vienna Girardi, who retired her long below-the-shoulder golden blonde hair after her time on The Bachelor with Jake, now has a chin length choppy bob.  Vienna’s hair is now a light beach blonde base with lighter highlights and some darker low lights.

Vienna appeared at last week’s Kissing Challenge wearing her blonde tresses hair  in a chunky French style braid extending off from her hairline and directed off to one side.  Her braid formed a chic headband.

Jessica Sarah Parker Has Frizz Filled Bad Hair Day

Actress and fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP) was recently spotted in London with her below-the-shoulder ombre tresses in a big frizzed filled wave infused hairstyle.

TheTwitter featured a photo of SJP’s hair and mentioned the English weather as the reason for her “big crimped bouffant hairstyle.”

They also hypothesized that the 46-year-old actress had traveled across the Pond without her hairstylist and that she did her hair herself with too many passes with a curling iron or hot rollers.

The truth? We will probably never known what happened with her hair except for the fact that she has naturally curly tresses. When you mix natural curls with humid climate like London is famous for you may be heading for a frizz filled bad hair day. Even SJP isn’t immune from a frizz hair attack as shown by her images in the DailyMail.

Although the Sex And The City star looked amazing in a sparkling tailored dress with a matching tuxedo jacket, her big, bushy, frizz filled wavy hairstyle was out of character for her normally well-coiffed look. (more…)

How To Prepare Your Skin For Fall

Now that Labor Day is here it’s time to transition your skin care needs from Summer to Fall.

While it’s important to continue to protect your skin all year-round with a broad spectrum sun screen, you should also consider other methods of preparing your skin for post-summer needs.

Listed below are some options to consider:

1. Indulge In A Fall Facial

Whether you Do It Yourself (DIY) at home or visit your favorite spa, it’s always great to start a new season with a clean slate.  Your skin will appreciate some tender loving care (TLC) after a long hot drying summer.  Opt for a soothing and moisturizing facial to create a healthy glow and an inner calm.

Your facial whether done at home or by a professional should ideally incorporate the following steps:

A.  Pre-Cleanse – Remove make-up and rinse in lukewarm water.
B.  Cleanse – Apply desired cleanser tied to your skin type and current needs.
C.  Rinse – After cleansing, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. (more…)

Reports Of Five More Patients Allegedly Blinded By Eye Drug Avastin

LOS ANGELES– The New York Times has reported that five more patients who were allegedly being treated for eye disease with the drug Avastin have been blinded.  This report was made according to one of the patients and medical professionals.

The latest cases of Avastin allegedly occurred last month at the Veterans Affairs medical center in Los Angeles.

Late Thursday, the Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed that the problem had occurred and said that an investigation into the matter was continuing.

Made by Genentech, Avastin is a cancer drug that is commonly used to treat the wet form of age-related macular degeneration.

It’s also utilized to treat other eye diseases because it costs only about $50 an injection.  The low cost of the treatments saves Medicare and patients hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

This is compared with using Lucentis, a somewhat similar Genentech drug which is approved for the treatment of eye diseases, but costs about $2,000 an injection.
