Buzz:  How To Tame Summer's Bites, Scrapes And Cuts

Summer months bring mosquitoes and other outside summer dangers.  But with the right at-home care, minor skin injuries — from hungry mosquitoes to a collision with a surfboard — don’t have to leave noticeable scars.

Dermatologists and plastic surgeons suggest the following treatment tips to speed healing and reduce scarring from common summer mishaps:

Carefully washing with soap and water is the first step in treating minor cuts and scratches, says Dr. Jay Calvert, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and associate professor of plastic surgery at the University of California’s Keck School of Medicine.

For sensitive skin, try a diluted solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water.

Some doctors also recommend applying a topical antibiotic ointment to prevent infection, but only for the first few days after injury.

Among over-the-counter antibiotic blends, pure bacitracin is least likely to trigger an allergic reaction, says Calvert.
