Steve Buscemi Takes Lead In HBO's Boardwalk Empire

Unless you've lived in a cave and don't have TV, you probably already know who Steve Buscemi is.  He's had an amazing career as an actor, writer and film director not to mention his voice work (Bucky in G Force) which places him in the category of quadruple threat.

Steven Vincent "Steve" Buscemi (pronounced /buːˈsɛmi/, boo-SEM-ee by the actor himself, but often /buːˈʃɛmi/, boo-SHEM-ee by others was born on December 13, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York.  The Sagittarian is also a Ba Gua 7 for those Feng Shui fanatics out there, which probably explains in part, his ability as a multi-nominated award winning actor.

Parting Glances

Buscemi made his bones as an actor in the film Parting Glances in 1986 which was directed by Bill Sherwood.

His acting work in Parting Glances began a dizzying trajectory that has ended with his eagerly awaited lead role in HBO's upcoming Boardwalk Empire scheduled to be released in September of 2010.

Although Parting Glances has been praised for its views on gay-life during the 80s as well as Buscemi's performance in the role of Nick, Buscemi is best known to the general public for his other roles and appearances in the Hollywood movies Reservoir Dogs (winner of Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor), Billy Madison, Fargo, Escape from L.A., Con Air, The Big Lebowski, and Mr. Deeds.

Armageddon

Buscemi is a very busy actor, writer and director because he is an amazing talent and what network or film director wouldn't want his brilliance as part of their project?  I've personally first enjoyed Steve's work as Rockhound in the 1998 hit Armageddon with Bruce Willis.  That's the first time he appeared on my radar.

After watching him play the crazy, but paternalistic Rockhound, I started looking for his other performances.  Imagine my surprise to see him as the hilarious Crazy Eyes in Mr. Deeds who favors oreo pizza and truly has crazy eyes.  Who could resist his portrayal of the drunken loser brother of a groom in The Wedding Singer?

Showcasing his many talents he directed four phenomenal episodes of my favorite Showtime series, Nurse Jackie, starring Edie Falco.  Edie created the role of the amazing Carmella Soprano, but to be honest, when I think of Edie these days, even though I loved her as Carmella, she's magnificent as Jackie.

In two of the Nurse Jackie episodes Buscemi's brother played the quirky character of God who stirs up all kinds of drama in the hospital.

Boardwalk Empire And Steve Buscemi Posed To Be Huge Hit

Although Steve continues to work on new projects, many industry insiders believe Boardwalk Empire is going to be a huge hit for HBO, Steve and the mega talented producers of this series.  No, the new series set in the 1920s is nothing like HBO mob series although co-executive producer Lawrence (Larry) Konner believes it will be widely "compared to The Sopranos".

If you're even thinking there is any connection between the two HBO series, put it instantly out of your mind and watch it with an unbiased and fresh perspective.   The two HBO series are completely and totally different.  If you even think about comparing the two, bite your tongue.

How could this new series be anything but phenomenal?  It has a great cast, amazing writing and award winning directors and producers attached to the project.  I for one can't wait to see Steve step up and shine as the leading man.  Can he pull it off?  I think he can with panache.

HBO, get those shelves ready in your trophy room for all the awards this spectacular series is sure to generate.  Meanwhile, don't forget to set your Tivo to make sure you don't miss a second.
