In her unforgettable memoir, One Day at a Time star Mackenzie Phillips breaks the silence about her shocking relationship with her father, John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas.

The former child star stunned fans and family last month (Sep09) when she revealed she had been raped by her father, The Mamas & The Papas singer John Phillips, on the eve of her 1979 wedding to Jeff Sessler. She admitted the sex eventually became consensual and continued for 10 years.

Oprah and many of her viewers took "issue" with Mackenzie saying that her relationship with her father did not really meet the definition of "consensual".

To prove the point Oprah had other incest survivors on her show on Thursday, October 15th, to discuss their own sexual relationships with their parents and why consensual is not really the proper label to attach to that type of relationship.

At one point Mackenzie skyped into the show and further discussed her situation with her father and why she had come to understand it was not a consensual sexual relationship as she had previously thought.

As always, Oprah did an amazing job of providing a different frame of reference for her viewers.  Oprah also touched on her own incest issues she experienced in her past, which is always brave and honest.

Mackenzie's Claims Have Caused Rage In Her Family

Mackenzie's claims have split her family in two, with her former stepmother Michelle accusing her of making up the sensational allegations.

Michelle Phillips, the ex-wife of John and a member of the Mamas & The Papas blamed Mackenzie's long-running struggle with drugs.  Michelle has said that Mackenzie was "delusional" saying, "I have every reason to believe it's untrue... Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She's had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years."

Mackenzie hit back at Michelle, claiming she was only "protecting the abuser".  Actress Valerie Bertinelli has spoken out to defend her former One Day at a Time co-star.

Bertinelli told the media "She (Mackenzie) was a very tortured soul. The many years that I've known her, for the first time I see this light coming out of her because she's letting go of all of that pain that's been inside of her."

Bertinelli also said "It really pains me that people would not believe something coming from her, you know because she had a needle stuck in her arm, but there was a reason the needle was stuck in her arm. So I say, give her grace."
