Miss California USA Pageant Unhappy With Carrie Prejean

Officials of the Miss California USA pageant strongly criticized some of the actions of titleholder Carrie Prejean Monday but as of Monday evening, May 11, 2009 the controversial beauty queen still had her title.

Co-executive directors Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler told a press conference that only Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump can make that decision. He plans a news conference some time today (Tuesday 5/12/09) in New York to discuss Carrie's status with regard to holding the title.

According to pageant officials, Miss California has been consistently "unavailable" to fulfill her duties as Beauty of California Ambassador.  Since Carrie Prejean has been so busy making personal appearances tied to her gay marriage views which caused major controversy at the pageant, the first Miss California runner up,  Tami Farrell, has been stepping in and handling what should be Carrie's duties.

If Donald Trump allows Carrie to continue as Miss California, the state pageant officials have agreed to welcome her back but will expect her to step up and fulfill her duties as Miss California.

The 21 year old Carrie Prejean created International controversy during the Miss USA pageant when she answered Judge Perez Hilton's question by saying she believes marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Since losing the pageant, many additional scandals have dogged Miss California including whether she violated her contract by making public appearances with groups opposed to same-sex marriage and her failure to reveal that she posed in her underwear as a teenager.   All women entering the pageant are given documents which require full disclosure.  It is believed that Carrie did not provide full and complete disclosure of her prior photo shoots.

California State Pageant officials have never criticized Ms. Prejean for her beliefs about gay marriage or any other issues but they do believe that as a representative of the state, Miss California USA must represent everyone in the state and not just special interest groups.

In addition, many critics are expressing anger about the fact that Carrie used state funds to finance her breast implants which she used as an advantage in the competition against other contestants.  Others believe that it is not uncommon for contestants to ask the state to help them finance various beauty enhancements to help their odds of winning for the states that they represent.

Miss USA 2005, Chelsea Cooley Altman agreed that Carrie's use of Miss California pageant funds for breast implants should not be part of the current decision about whether she should retain her crown or not.

"When you have a state director," Altman said, "they really go out of their way to do whatever they can to prepare the girls to their best ability (for the Miss USA competition). "They don't promote having surgical implants of any kind. But if a title holder comes to them expressing the need and it's something that they genuinely desire, then the state director, I can imagine how they would want to go out of their way to help her, if this is something that she came to them for. I don't think it's something they went to her about. So I don't really think there's an issue there."

What is your opinion.  Should Miss California lose her crown since she has not been available to fulfill her appearance duties or do you think she should be allowed to retain her title?
