It was a no-brainer when Howard Beach, New York native Pia Toscano, 22, was named one of the top 13 contestants on “American Idol” last Thursday.
The raven haired beauty took the stage and ended her stunning "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders with a standing ovation from the audience and judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
“You were saving that for when it counts,” Lopez said after Toscano’s stunning performance, which has made many entertainment critics say makes her a front runner in the competition.
Before performing "Ill Stand By Your" Toscano was not a major standout but after receiving the first standing ovation of the AI 10, she is considered one to watch. Many winners of American Idol have been instantly vaulted into full-fledged stardom.
Toscano began performing around the age of 2 and has gone on to sing the national anthem during a Mets game and open for the music group the Barenaked Ladies. And while her “all time favorite” performer is Whitney Houston, her biggest inspiration is her sister, Toscano said in an official video released by “American Idol.”
Although talent plays a huge part in deciding the ultimate AI winner, the successful contestants must also exhibit a total package including image, personal style and ability to command a stage presence. Based on her last performance Toscano has what it takes to make it to the end.
Toscano will next perform on the show tonight (3/9/11) at 8 p.m. on Fox. One person will be voted off the show each week from now on until the ultimate winner will be announced on May 25. While Toscano is wildly talented and beautiful, can she compete against some of the amazing other talents? Only time will tell.
