Shondrella Avery: Girl Behaving Badly

Introduction

Shondrella Avery has been quoted as saying "I finally made it when I appeared on One on One on UPN". From her successful launch on the UPN Network Shondrella landed her co-starring role on Oxygen networks' "Girls Behaving Badly".

The show which appears on Fridays at 8:00 pm ET/PT consists of a cast of sexy females that set up a series of pranks on unsuspecting people. The show is a cross between the old Candid Camera and Punk'd with the goal to get a lot of audience laughs and entertainment.

The beautiful actress traces her performing career back to age six or seven when she started to really slip into her big personality.

In the past Avery appeared on "Martin" where she first started doing a lot of work as an extra. Eventually she got more notice from her work on that show and worked on "Living Single", "The Jamie Foxx Show", "for Your Live," and "Cedric the Enterainer Present". The talented performer just completed a feature film with John Amos called "Watermelon Heist".

She also has performed in "Catfish and Gumbo" on Showtime. If that isn't enough, Shondrella appears in a one woman show for HBO. The basis of her show is her life growing up in a family with over 190 foster children.

Her most recent news items are tied to her performance in the controversial film Domino starring Keira Knightly.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State L.A., this 28 year-old rising star has told the media that she strives to be a good a role model, first to her siblings, and then to other women.

Shondrella is a firm believer in the power of good education. She advises all aspiring actors and actresses to "get your education" and to know "what your dreams are and never let anything derail you from those dreams".

Tress Trendsetter

Shondrella definitely knows how to get attention. She not only wears the latest fashions well, she is also a trendsetter with her tresses.

Over the past two years the talented celebrity has worn a variety of hairstyles morphing through an array of colors, textures and lengths.

When she recently strolled down the Red Carpet at the 2005 Vibe Awards she was coiffed in a big afro. Although the traditional hairstyle made fashion statements back in the 1970s when worn by the likes of Angela Davis, the style is again hot for 2005.

As written about by Joan Morgan in Essence magazine in April of 2005 "today, almost four decades since its emergence in American culture, the Afro is very much a survivor, taking up residency everywhere from hip-hops's uban lairs to Parisian runways".

Shondrella has also played with sleek straight looks (shown to the side) and lots of texture (shown above). She has tried on a wide range of hues from very dark black to strawberry blonde.

Steal Her Look

I recently caught up with celebrity hairdresser Robert Hallowell who does not currently work with Shondrella but has worked with many celebrity African American women including The Pointer Sisters.

I asked Robert to help me understand how Shondrella's hairdresser might have created her gorgeous Afro style that she recently wore.

Robert pointed out that the key secret to having a fabulous Afro (besides being born with the right hair texture) is to make sure that the strands are kept moist and soft. He also commented that it is important to start with a good basic cut that facilitates the ultimate shaping of the style.

To copy Shondrella's current 2005 Afro style, Robert recommended the following steps.

STEP 1 For a more uniform Afro style, start with hair that has been carefully cut to allow for uniform Afro puffs to easily and naturally form.

To protect bleached, blonde highlighted or colored tresses, start by dousing hair completely with lukewarm water. Keep in mind that hotter temperatures will speed up fading and dry hair even further.

Select a super moisturizing shampoo formula like Robert Hallowell's Shine Booster Shampoo which Robert actually uses on all of his celebrity clients.

Other formulas you might try include Phytojoba or one designed for colored hair like Phytocitrus. For ultra dry or super fragile strands, use the dry hair formulas and dilute the shampoo for extra gentleness.

Tips For Diluting Shampoo

If hair is super dry, you might consider using a diluted form of shampoo to wash your tresses.

To dilute shampoo mix 1 part of your favorite product in a freshly washed container with 8-10 parts of warm water. Shake until the mixture forms a suds.

Drizzle the suds over the top of your crown and pat into wet strands. Gently drizzle some of the sudsy formula down the length of your strands. Pat carefully.

Apply only one shampoo application. Rinse well with lukewarm water.

If your hair is very prone to extreme dryness or frizz, consider adopting one of the Phyto Special Treatment programs in for dry hair or for fighting frizz.

STEP 2

After one application of shampoo, rinse well. Keep in mind that if shampoo is not completely removed, a soap film will remain on your strands and cause them to be dull or hard to manage.

When you have finished rinsing your strands gently squeeze out any excess water with your fingers. Apply your favorite rinse-out conditioning product. Robert currently uses Robert Hallowell's Prawduct - shine booster conditioner to add necessary moisture, softness and shine.

Be sure to match the product to your hair type, texture and condition. Work the conditioner into the driest parts of your hair. Leave on for up to five minutes. Rinse well. Finish with a cool to cold water rinse.

STEP 3

Towel blot your strands to remove excess drippage. Apply your favorite detangling product or leave-in conditioning product based on your type, texture and current condition of your strands.

Robert recommends applying a small dollop of Robert Hallowell Prawduct - the flat factor - 5 oz (150 ml) and distributing completely through damp strands. Robert pointed out that the gel would soften hair as well as add a nice sheen of moisture to the tresses. He pointed out that the flat factor would also add a nice shine.

To add extra moisture to dry strands, try Robert Hallowell Prawduct - love that shine treatment exlixir - 2 oz (60 ml)

Keep in mind that if you have fine or thin strands, you will want to use a very light detangling spray. For medium to thicker strands, use a heavier conditioning product.

STEP 4

Let hair air dry naturally or use a long finger diffuser and scrunch hair until it is completely dry.

STEP 5

When hair is completely dry, use a pick or wide tooth comb to pick out your tresses into the desired natural shape.

STEP 6

When hair is shaped to desired fullness, apply either Robert Hallowell Prawduct - love that shine spray or Robert Hallowell Prawduct - love that shine drops to the palms of your hands. Lightly brush the shine product over the top of your finished style to seal in moisture and add shine.
