Prom Hair: 5 Hairstyles For Long Locks

Introduction

One hot hair trend for Prom 2004 season is stick straight long locks. Why? So many Prom gals have forked out major dollars over the past year for thermal reconditioning (TR) or other similar relaxing treatments that the last thing they want is to hide their glorious straight strands under a bun, twist or updo of any kind. While the 2004 Prom hair trend is to show off those hard earned permanently ironed tresses, there are some styling options you may wish to consider that will still show off your beautiful straight locks but give you a edgy or more finished look to match your gown.

In some cases wearing your straightened tresses down around your dress may actually hide some of the beautiful beading or gown details. You may want to wear your hair long and sleek but position your style to allow maximum show off time for your gorgeous gown.

Prom Hair Long Locks Style Options

When selecting one of the following long locks Prom options consider your dress style and ornamentation, your hair type and texture and the overall image you are trying to project.

Try some of these great Prom hairstyles that will showcase straight strands.

1. Opt for a half up/half down hairstyle.

Half up/half down styles like the one shown right above from Alfred Angelo are very easy to create.

A half up/half down gives you the look and feel of a formal do but with no muss, no fuss and the ability to show off your gorgeous straight locks.

Steps To Create

  • Simply separate the equal sized hair panel from each side of your face.

  • Apply a good styling spray or cream. to make the hair sleek and to add shine.

  • Brush the hair panels until they are smooth and gently pull each side back until they meet halfway at the middle of your crown.

  • Create a small ponytail that rests snugly against your scalp at the back of your crown.

  • Capture the newly created pony with a Blax or hair bungee in the same color as your hair.

  • You can gently pull at the new pony so that the hair lays flatly draped against your sides or you can pull the half pony tight against your scalp for a completely different look.

  • Take a 1/2" strand of your half pony and wrap it around the Blax or bungee to camouflage the wrap. Or if you prefer, decorate the half pony with a gorgeous jeweled pony elastic, crystal encrusted barrette or a smattering of rhinestone French hair pins to hide the Blax or hair bungee.

Use a curling iron, if desired, to give the half pony a slight cascade of curls. Or wear the half pony completely straight and blended into the rest of your cascading straight locks.

(Dress from Alfred Angelo Collection).

Rub a little hair wax or cream into the palms of your hands and then glide them over your hair to prevent any flyways from escaping to ruin your beautiful do. Spray with a good hairspray.

Note: Remember to always spray your hair with any finishing hairspray BEFORE you add any flowers or hair jewels. If you spray the flowers or hair accessories there is a chance that you will speed up the flower's ultimate demise or cause delicate crystals or rhinestones to cloud. Avoid getting any hair wax or creams on accessories as well.

2. Select A Hairline Roll Style

Creating soft rolls accomplishes a number of things. It pulls the hair up and off the face as well as showing off a beautiful gown's top, jeweled neckline or seductive straps.

If you plan on wearing a killer necklace and/or matching chandelier style earrings, this style showcases your hair but keeps it from becoming entangled in your gorgeous jewelry accessories.

Steps To Create

  • Brush your hair until it is completely detangled and silky.

  • Apply a good styling spray or cream to help hold the style as well as impart shine.

  • Create a deep side part. With a rattail comb or your fingers, pick up 1/2 to 1" strand of hair closest to your hairline.

  • Twist the hairline strand in a clockwise direction until you have a fairly tight roll. Experiment with making the roll looser or tighter to get a different look. Securely clip the new hair roll.

  • Repeat the same steps on the hair on the opposite side of the part. Clip the second twisted section.

  • Pull the two newly twisted sections together underneath the rest of your hair. Band them together with a Blax or hair bungee in the same color as your hair. The twisted ends will lay flat near your scalp, underneath all of your other hair. To make sure that it is tight and secure, add several bobby pins to anchor to your scalp.

Decorate the top of the rolls with tiny jewel encrusted French Pins, sparkly hair snaps or magnets or tiny alligator clips.

Arrange the rest of your hair in a long silky veil in the back. You have the option to use a 1 1/2" curling iron to create soft curls on the ends.

Although this elegant style can be designed with an deep side part, if you prefer, experiment with different types of part for a slightly different look. The look can be modified to accommodate a center or other type of part is desired. This style can be worn with or without bangs according to preference.

3. Its A Wrap

One Prom hairstyle for long locks that was showcased on previous Prom dress runway shows was the hot new hair wraps.

A wrapped long hairstyle is unbelievably easy to craft. All you need is shiny stick straight locks and some gorgeous silk, satin, velvet or suede ribbons that are 1-2 inches in width.

Steps To Create

  • Brush your hair until it is completely detangled and silky.

  • Apply a good styling spray or cream.

  • Let the cream completely dry before proceeding.

  • Create a center side part. With a rattail comb or your fingers, pick up 1/2 to 1" strand of hair closest to your hairline.

  • Making sure your hair is 100% dry to avoid staining the wrap, tie the ribbon of choice securely at the base of the hair strand near the scalp. If you are worried about the strand slipping you can cheat with tiny hairpins to hold the base ribbon knot in place.

  • Wrap the ribbon around the strand from top to bottom in a crisscrossed fashion. Securely tie the ribbon at the bottom about 1 inch above the bottom of the strand.

  • Use tiny hairpins that are 1/4 to 1/2 inches in the same color of your hair if you need a secondary anchor for the ribbons.

This style offers a lot of possibilities for customization. You can wrap strands on either side of the part. Or you can wrap two or more strands along just one side of your hair.

One of the recent reality TV Bachelor shows, one of the final bachelorettes had her lush ponytail wrapped with a real diamond necklace. The sparkle was intense and show stopping.

Keep in mind that blondes and dark haired brunettes look stunning in hair jewels that are silvery, brilliant white crystal or diamond or have stark white hues. Red heads and light chocolate brunettes look stunning in pearls and hair accessories with golden and creamy tones.

If you want to break all the rules decorate your style with your corsage. For 2004 orchids, gardenias and sprigs of berries are the happening choices. Why not pin your orchid right into your hair?

Note: Remember to always apply a medium to heavy holding spray to the finished style BEFORE adding flowers or hair accessories. Add a light sprinkling of glitter gel for added dazzle or jazz up the sides or back with hair jewels. Feel free to use tiny bobby pins to help anchor any loose hair. If you spray the flowers or hair accessories there is a chance that you will speed up the flower's ultimate demise or cause delicate crystals or rhinestones to cloud.

4. Braids Are Sizzling

Although saucy three strand and French braids are back in style for Prom 2004, if you want to show off your long straight strands, you may not want to capture all of your hair in a full braid which would hide its appearance to some extent.

Instead, you may want to go with a half up/half down style but braid the tail section of the half pony.

Steps To Create

  • Brush your hair until it is completely detangled and silky.

  • Apply a good styling spray or cream.

  • Create a deep side part. With a rattail comb or your fingers, pick up 1/2 to 1" strand of hair closest to your hairline.

  • Simply separate the equal sized hair panel from each side of your face.

  • Brush the panels until they are smooth and gently pull each side back until they meet halfway at the middle of your crown.

  • Use tiny hairpins that are 1/4 to 1/2 inches in the same color of your hair if you need a secondary anchor.

  • Take the long "tail" and braid into a 3 strand over or under braid. If you prefer, create a French braid or separate the tail into multiple little sections and create tiny braids on each section. Experiment with more or less braids to get a slightly different look. Remember to focus on creating the braids the same size so that the style has a balanced look.

Option #1

Another option is to French braid the half pony and then fold it up and under the crown section so that it looks like you have a half updo with free flowing locks that cascade down from the half pony area. Pin well to secure. Decorate the braided section with tiny faux flowers, jeweled hairpins or tiny jaw clips.

Option #2

Instead of a side hair roll that is twisted into place, you may want to experiment with tiny side braids instead. This braided look was recently worn by the gorgeous Jessica Simpson for one of her singing appearances and was stunning.

Option #3

A final option would be to cornrow the top part of your head just to the top of your crown area. Tie off the individual cornrows and let the rest of your tresses cascade from the cornrows.

5. Sleek Ponies Rock

Celebrities with longer straight hair like Hillary Duff, Britney and Christina Aguilera have all been glamming up with edgy versions of a sleek pony. Whether you wear your pony high, low or somewhere in between, you can show off your spectacular straight long strands to their best advantage.

Steps To Create

  • Brush your hair until it is completely detangled and silky.

  • Apply a good styling spray or cream.

  • Pull all of the hair from the hairline back into a tight ponytail.

  • Pull the ponytail high or low on your crown, depending on your desired look.

  • Capture the newly created pony with a Blax or hair bungee in the same color as your hair.

  • You can gently pull at the new pony so that the hair lays flatly draped against your sides or you can pull the pony tight against your scalp for a completely different look.

  • Take a 1/2" strand of hair from your pony and wrap it around the Blax or bungee to camouflage the ponytail anchor.

  • Use tiny hairpins that are 1/4 to 1/2 inches in the same color of your hair if you need a secondary anchor.

  • Use a curling iron to add a very slight curl or curls to the finished pony.

Option #1

Shake up the trend with a full side pony to show off a beaded back or consider two full side ponies for a more playful look.

Option #2

Decorate the ponies with crystal encrusted pony elastics. Opt to layer the entire pony from top to bottom with alternating jeweled pony bands. Space the elastics every 2-4 inches to create a blinding sparkle.

Option #3

If you prefer you can also apply the hair wrap concept to one full pony or two ponies. Wrap with long beaded strands, ultra chic silk or satin in colors to match your gown or even with long pearl or crystal necklaces. WOW. You will radiate glam chick appeal.
