To cut or not to cut. That is the eternal hair styling question that haunts most of us at some time in our life.

When it comes to long strands that have been carefully grown and nurtured for a long time, it is often considered inappropriate for a stylist or hair professional to encourage a major chop. I agree with this commonly held opinion. After all, I am a fan of long hair and believe that sometimes the decision to cut it happens without good cause.

Sometimes a significant cut is necessary because the ends of the strands or the tresses as a whole are severely damaged. Another good reason for a cut is when the hair is too thick, bulky and unmanageable.

Additional cutting issues come into play including the wishes and needs of the client. In this specific case, the model's wishes for how much of her hair should be trimmed off the ends was completely honored by the stylist and the salon.

Before

Model Julia (shown above and below) visited the famous New York City's Gerard Bollei Salon (212-759-7985) with a classic below bra strength (BS) length mane of wild waves and curls.

Julia wanted a completely new hair style that gave her a more professional and mature image that looked more finished. She wanted to brighten up the color of her natural shade. Julia also wanted to have the length reduced to trim damaged ends and give her hair a healthier overall look.

The Makeover

Working with Bollei stylist and colorist Blanche Grauer, Julia discussed her hair goals and the ultimate style and look she wanted to accomplish.

Although Julia wanted to keep her hair length on the longer side so she could grow it out again, if she desired, it was agreed that some of the length would be carefully removed to achieve a healthier overall look.

Blanche started by jazzing up Julia's color. Wella's Color Touch semi-permanent hair color was applied in a sultry caramel tone to add depth and shine.

Blanche then carefully razor cut Julia's tresses to remove a lot of the bulk and thickness. She trimmed the ends to fall a couple of inches below Julia's shoulders. Blanche also strategically added carefully crafted layers to fall in soft layers around Julia's beautiful face.

After Hair Makeover Styling Tips

Blanche designed a new hue and style that accentuated Julia's beautiful face, stunning skin and lips with a delicate yet freshly sensual style.

The slightly squared off angles of Julia's face, especially near her chin area, were softened.

Makeup was applied at the end to show off Julia's gorgeous eyes.

Julia also still has enough length to allow her to wear her hair pulled back or pinned up. The style is breathtaking and polished yet very flexible and easy to maintain.

Styling

Blanche used Wella Brilliance Spray gel on Julia's newly shampooed hair. She then blow dried it using a round brush for lift.

The key to re-creating this style at home is to use a good post-shampoo defrisant product like Phytodefrisant to control fizzy waves and/or curls and maintain the sultry sleekness.

Phyto - Phytodefrisant Baum 3.3 ozBlow-dry the style with a flat or paddle style brush to get sleek straight strands and then use a round brush for gentle root lift and light flicks on the ends. Add a bit of mousse to help with volume creation.

Apply a tiny bit of styling cream or gel to the bangs and then finger pick to give them that sexy, just tousled style.

Finishing Touches

Rene Furterer - Spray Gloss - 100ml/3.38 ozApply a tiny bit of styling cream or gel to the bangs and then finger pick to give them that sexy, just tousled style.

To add even more color depth opt for Ken Paves Healthy Hair Boost Up Color Drops in your favorite hue. Or you may wish to use a color enhancing shampoo to pump up the color.

Add a dab of shine with Phyto's PhyoLisse, Rene Furterer's Spray Gloss or Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shine Serum. Another option is Robert Hallowell's Love That Shine Drops and you will have a bright and shiny hairstyle.

Daily Hair Tip
Choose a hairstyle that specifically suits your face shape, hair type, texture and lifestyle. Never choose a hairstyle for a popular celebrity or for the hair trend of the moment. Celebrity and fashion hair styles change rapidly leaving you with yesterday's style.
