Hair Makeover: Elegant Edginess

Introduction

The foundation of any great hairstyle is a well designed and executed haircut. While hair color can be a significant factor to the overall design, other considerations like natural texture, hair condition, long term care and styling requirements are just as important.

To be effective, a hair makeover has to include an evaluation of the current haircut. A master hairstylist will analyze whether the cut provides a solid foundation for styling goals. They will also question whether the color is a good compliment or a distraction to the cut?

By studying face shape, skin tone and other features, the skilled hair master will recommend changes that result in maximum benefits for a long term successful makeover.

Before

Model Jessica (shown above & to the side) recently visited the fabulous Gerard Bollei Salon, NYC (212-759-7985) for a professional makeover that would enhance, rather than dramatically alter, her existing look.

Master stylist Cassie Rita studied Jessica's rounded shaped face that had some slightly squared angles for styling inspiration. Jessica's tresses were a beautiful natural shade of glossy black. Cassie decided to show off Jessica's beautiful natural hues with a slightly modified style.

The Makeover

Cassie Rita's goal for Jessica's makeover was to take advantage of her natural wavy strands and kick up the texture to achieve lots of movement and body.

Softening the ends with a skillful razoring technique, Cassie Rita also feathered Jessica's thick bulky tresses to give her style more flow and bend.

Adding a light fringe of wispy, unevenly textured, bangs instantly flattered Jessica's eyes and minimized her prominent forehead.

Careful snipping and carving of strands around the facial perimeter resulted in a new face hugging silhouette that added a soft sultry appeal. Select pieces of hair were pulled forward along the cheeks to minimize and flatter.

After

The result? A magnificent transformation from thick weightless tresses to a sleek razored basic bob shape.

Jessica's new style combines soft textures with flexibility. She can wear it sleek or play with pomades, pastes or waxes to piece it up a little.

Styling

Cassie Rita used a Volume Boosting Spray like Robert Hallowell's super volumizing tonic to crank up Jessica's roots and the crown with lots of fullness. She blow dried the style using her hands and fingers to lift and pull ends into place. She then used a flat iron around the front to achieve a sleek face framing cap.

The sassy face framing shape combined with an eyebrow shaping from Bollei's talented Suzanne Hadaszy and a make-up tune-up by the masterful Janet Paolucci gave Jessica's eyes and lips the perfect finish.

Styling Products

Rene Furterer - Fioravanti Light Weight Detangling CreamThe key to re-creating this style at home is to choose good products. Use a post-shampoo lightweight, detangling cream rinse like Rene Furterer's Fioravanti Light Weight Detangling Cream designed to remove static electricity, nourish and soften the hair while adding elasticity and shine. This will add to the sleekness of the style and control frizziness as well.

Blow-dry the style with your fingers to lift and pull the strands into placement. If you prefer, you can also use a flat or paddle style brush to get sleek straight strands and then use a round brush for gentle root lift. Add a bit of mousse to help with volume creation.

Apply a tiny bit of styling cream or gel to the bangs and then finger pick to give them that sexy, just tousled style.

Finishing Touches

Phyto - PhytoLisse (Formerly Phytodefrisant RelaxSerum)To add even more color depth, consider using a color enhancing shampoo like those from Mine, Paul Mitchell or Aveda. Or if you prefer ask your hair care professional about Goldwell's Colorance Color 'n Care Conditioner and Color Styling Mousse in a complimentary color.

Add a dab of shine with Phyto's PhyoLisse, Rene Furterer's Spray Gloss or Robert Hallowell's Love That Shine Drops and your 2004 will be a bright and shiny new hair year for you.
