Felicity Huffman: Frazzled Housewife Hair

Introduction

Felicity Huffman Atlantic Theater Company's 20th Anniversary Gala New York, New York

Offscreen Felicity Huffman is much less frazzled and rocks much better hair than her high-strung Desperate Housewives character, Lynette Scavo.

A Sagittarius (born December 9, 1962), Felicity is very different from her on-screen character.

The beautiful blonde actress has two daughters, Sofia Grace, born August 1, 2000 and Georgia Grace, born March 14th, 2002, whom she adores, Felicity has her act together. Maybe she had a lot of experience dealing with kids. Afterall, she is the youngest of seven daughters and one brother.

Married to the highly respected actor, William H. Macy since 1997, Felicity seems more focused on doing a great job as an actress than worrying about on-screen feuds or other unnecessary dramas.

Trained In The Arts

Felicity graduated in 1981 from the very prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy (high school) in Interlochen, Michigan.

She followed up her arts training with a BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of Arts in 1988.

The actress won her the best actress award in 2005 at the Tribeca Film Festival for her performance in "Transamerica," in her role as Bree, a transsexual woman.

She was especially proud of that role, talking about it with Ellen Degeneres on the Ellen show in May of 2005.

Felicity explained that she had to work hard to research the role and worked with several coaches to understand how to really get behind the character.

If you had never heard of Felicity before her appearance on Wisteria Lane, its not because she hasn't been around the acting block.

The blonde actress played straight-talking TV producer Dana Whitaker on Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night (1998-2000). where she was nominated for for two Golden Globe awards in 2000.

Felicity co-starred on Showtime's 2003 mini series "Out of Order" and had a recurring role on NBC's comedy as Julia Wilcox on "Frasier."

During 2004 she was featured in Garry Marshall's "Raising Helen" as Lindsey Davis and the CBS TV movie "Reversible Errors" opposite her husband, William H. Macy, and Tom Selleck.

Her guest appearances are impressive. She appeared in a multitude of roles on Law & Order, The X Files, Chicago Hope, The West Wing and The D.A. The actress is very talented and very much in demand.

Bobbed For Beauty

With the huge success of Housewives, Felicity, who has sometimes been credited as "Flicka" has joined her cast mates in helping to promote the show and greet the fans on the Red Carpet.

She was quoted by a recent issue of Redbook, when she was the cover model, that she "didn't look good in jeans".

Little did she know. In reality, she is more known for her long lean buff figure than her honey blonde tresses or her beautiful smile. Felicity does not shy away from wearing form fitting gowns on the runway.

Even though Felicity cleans up nicely, she appears to be the least interested of the wives in morphing into a fashion or hair icon. She definitely seems more focused on her role as a wife, mother and professional actress.

In fact, she often appears at film events on the arm of her equally talented actor husband.

Forty Three And Fabulous

Felicity Huffman

Felicity was born in New York and went to school in Michigan, but she is currently a California girl where she resides with her family and where Housewives if currently filmed.

Desperate Housewives is a fabulous show with a great cast of characters that have saved us from the death of the Sex And The City girls, even better, it has blown off the doors for actresses who have left 40 in the rearview mirror.

Felicity along with the other 40+ actresses on Wisteria Lane have demonstrated that you can still look hot and have a sizzling career regardless of your age.

How To Steal Felicity's Hairstyle

Right now Felicity is busy filming new projects, taking care of her family and making the required round of appearances on the various talk shows.

On the Red Carpet the award winning actress isn't afraid to let her hair down.

Since Housewives appeared in 2004, Felicity has shown up in some stunning couture gowns with her long layered bob worn in loose sassy curls, twisted up in a cascade of bouncy tendrils and worn silky straight.

The beautiful blonde morphs back and forth, courtesy of great hairdressers between full blown bangs, center and side parts.

Unlike harried housewife Lynette who seems to have endless bad hair days, Felicity is blessed with healthy, glossy tresses that currently cascades just below the top of her shoulders.

Her face is a mostly an oval shape with some square angles and a slightly prominent.

Step By Step Instructions

To achieve Felicity's sleek and straight, slightly layered bob style, complete the following steps:

STEP 1

Over the life of her acting career Felicity has stayed close to a range of blonde hues and has avoided drastic color changes. Her current tresses appear to have been lightly highlighted with a splash of honey highlights which compliments her eyes and skin tone.

Felicity Huffman

Start with a hair treatment program from Phyto designed to protect and maintain highlights.

For ultra dry or super fragile strands, select a super moisturizing shampoo formula like Phytojoba or one designed for your specific hair type, texture and current condition. Experiment with diluting the shampoo for extra gentleness.

STEP 2

Gently squeeze excess water out of the strands. Apply your favorite leave-in conditioner with your fingers. Match the conditioning product to your hair type, texture and condition.

Work the conditioner into the driest parts of your hair. Leave on for up to five minutes. Rinse well. Finish with a cool to cold water rinse.

STEP 3

Towel blot your strands to remove excess water. Apply your favorite detangling product or leave-in conditioning product based on your type, texture and current condition of your strands.

Felicity Huffman

Keep in mind that if you have fine or thin strands, you will want to use a very light detangling spray. For medium to thicker strands, use a heavier conditioning product.

If you are prone to frizz, experiment with frizz fighting formulas like Phytodefrisant or similar that help provide a sleeker smoother finish.

STEP 4

If you want to go for Felicity's sleek straight style, be sure to either apply a defrisant product like Phytodefrisant or a straightening balm.

Distribute a dime-sized dollop of the product of your choice into the palms of your hands and mix well. Use your fingers to work the product completely through your tresses.

STEP 5

Separate your hair into 2" sections and blow dry with a large round brush, starting near the back of the head and working around to the front on either side.

Beginning at the back of your head, blow-dry hair in half-inch pieces using a large round brush. To create extra volume, hold brush in the hair near the scalp until the hair cools (about five seconds), then move the brush down and through to the ends of the hair.

STEP 6

To create a super straight finish, separate strands into 2 inch strands and then use a hot flat iron to touch up any sections that require a smoother texture. Work around the head from side to side to achieve an even look.

If you prefer to add saucy curls like Felicity separate strands into 1-2 inch sections. Use a 1 12" curling iron or hot rollers to set hair. Let new curls cool completely and then remove. Tousle with your fingers.

STEP 7

If desired, spray lightly with the hairspray of your choice. Finish with a shine serum or spray. Apply to the palms of your hands and lightly brush across the surface of your hair.

Optional Look - Soft Curly Ponytail

If you prefer to go with Felicity's soft pony that she wore to the Trevor in December or 2004, complete the following instructions:

Step 1: Start with second day completely dry hair. Apply a small dime sized blob of hair cream to the palms of your hands.

Use your fingers to evenly distribute the cream from the top of the ears down to the ends. Avoid applying any product near the scalp which can make hair greasy and prone to falling flat.

Step 2: Use a large boars or all natural bristle brush like one from Mason Pearson, Kent or Conair to brush all strands off of the face. Felicity has loose tendrils on either side. If you wish to copy those, use a comb to pull them out of the rest of your hair.

Step 3: Using fingers, carefully smooth the sides and back of your tresses into a high ponytail that rests right below the back of your crown. Be sure that all hair around the front and sides are neatly pulled into a sleek pony.

Step 4: Tie off the newly created ponytail with a "hair friendly" elastic band such as a Blax in the same hue as your hair color.

Felicity Huffman

Step 5: Once the ponytail is carefully tied off, lightly backcomb the entire tail to give it fullness and encourage curls to form.

Step 6: Use your fingers to carefully smooth the back combed ponytail hair down into a smooth look.

If you wish, use a 1 1/2" curling iron to "touch up" all the ends and add back some curls.

Step 7: Spray with a firm hold hairspray.

Hairsprays to try: Phytolaque & Phytolaque Soie for a softer hold, for a strong hold, Rene Furterer Instant Hold Hairspray.

Step 8: For added dazzle, apply a tiny drop of shine serum or shine spray to the palms of your hands.

Glide your hands lightly over the top of your strands, avoiding the roots, to add instant shimmer.

Other shine products to try: Philip Pelusi - Glisten - Anti-Frizz Spray & Sunguard, Phyto - PhytoLisse.

Customize the pony look to fight your face shape, hair length and texture by experimenting with different parts. Try tucking parts of the side hair behind the ears for a different look.
