Dreadlocks On American Idol: Hair Locks Bring Attention

Introduction

History has demonstrated that American Idol contestants with unusual hair styles have an instant and unique way to attract attention which might help get fan votes.

Dreadlocks were the way that Jason Castro stood apart on his season of American Idols.

Jason René Castro, born March 25, 1987, is an American acoustic/folk-pop/contemporary Christian singer-songwriter and was the fourth place finalist on the seventh season of American Idol.

When Jason was on the show in 2008 he was 20 years old and won fans over with his blue eyes and stunning dreadlocks.

After Idol, he signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records and his self-titled debut album was released on April 13, 2010.

Jason was part of a season with a group of contestants who exhibited intense talent in the competition. But Jason had an edge. He instantly caught fan's attention with his dreadlocks and was nicknamed "Dreadheads".

If you're an American Idol fan you know that the contestants build a strong fan base who often give themselves names to show their support for their Idol. Thus Jason's fans were known as the Dreadheads.

In a phone interview with the Dallas Morning News, Jason's hometown newspaper, the dreaded Jason confirmed his hairstyle takes "virtually zero" upkeep. He noted "every morning I just wake up and look the same". He did confirm he regularly "washes his hair" because "it's still hair - it'll still stink".

During his time on American Idol Jason had a controversy with the song he chose to sing in his original AI audition. The song wasn't granted clearance to be used on the show so Jason had a bit of a disadvantage.

Nigel Lythogoe, executive producer for Idol talked about the controversy. Lythogoe said "the song was "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, which is owned by three entities. Because one of the three said no, Jason wasn't allowed to perform "one of the best performances we've ever had, and we couldn't show anyone."

Lythgoe said Jason's performance was "one of the best performances we've ever had, and we couldn't show anyone."

Even though Jason wasn't allowed to show his performance of "Crazy" he was fine with it. He explained to the media "I'm kind of camera-shy." He said "I was always freaked out, so in front of the camera I look anti-social."

Summary

Although Jason Castro didn't win American Idol, he finished 4th which is an excellent place to finish.

He has continued to perform since leaving American Idol. Jason release a self-titled album, Jason Castro, on April 12, 2010 on Atlantic Records.

He worked with songwriter, producer and Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi and producer John Fields. On the album he also worked with DioGuardi, Guy Chamgers, Martin Terefe and Dave Lichens, Jason Reeves, Sacha Skarbek and Espionage.

Jason recently married and he and his wife are expecting a baby in August of 2011. And yes, he is still a dreadhead with his amazing dreadlocks continuing to grow and look spectacular.
