Katee Sackhoff - Short Sassy SciFi Strands!!
Karen Marie Shelton
Revised Date: 09/20/07 -  Original Publication Date: 03/01/1997

Introduction

Katee Sackhoff - 3/03/06

Lets dispense with my dirty little secret right up front.  I am a SciFi addict.  You may be wondering how a hair and beauty expert can be addicted to a series like Battlestar Galactica?  Simple, I started watching for the hair and got hooked on the storylines, the characters and the special effects.

My addictions morphed into a completely separate Cylon life of their own. From Battlestar I found myself fretting my Tivo might miss an episode of Stargate Atlantis with awesome dreadlocks and related strands.

From Atlantis I worked my way backwards to SG1.  I refuse to confuse to any other science fiction nerd habits at this time and prefer to focus on my favorite series - Battlestar Galactica.

I adore all of the characters on Galactica from President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to the various "human" Cylons like Sharon Valerii (Grace Park).

My favorite is Kara "Starbuck" Thrace.  Not only is her character a fierce Viper pilot who kicks combat butt, she is a fracking rebel that always wears an appropriate fighter pilot collection of short and sassy hair styles.

Katee Sackhoff as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on Battlestar Galactica 2005

When Starbuck is "on duty" she wears her short bobbed strands in a small no-nonsense - lets kick some Cylon ass - sleek bob or tiny ponytail.

Katee's on-screen strands perfectly resonate with her character's moods and personality.  Starbuck fights to the death and she plays with equal intensity.  When viewers occasionally catch a glimpse of her hidden big heart, she is often coiffed in a slightly softer or tousled do.

In real life Katee Sackhoff (Kathryn Ann Sackhoff), the actress who brilliantly captures the heart and soul of Starbuck is a glamour girl.  Her white on white shimmering blonde tresses are soft and sassy.  They perfectly highlight her stunning features

It's hard to imagine a real life glam girl climbing into a Viper to do fierce battle.  Besides proving that a great actress can be a true chameleon, taking on a completely different screen look and personality, Katee demonstrates the incredible versatility of short tresses.

Katee's Hair Preferences

Katee Sackhoff

Ironically, if she had her wish, Katee would have much longer hair.  In an interview with About.com's SciFi Channel she admitted

"I do want Starbuck to have longer hair. I’ve had long hair my entire life. It’s really hard to chop your hair off and go to work and not feel like a boy."

While I personally respect Katee's feelings about loving long hair, she looks absolutely stunning with her current style and it really does underline her role on the show.

I managed to locate a pre-Battlestar photo of Katee with somewhat longer locks. She looks charming but it does invoke a soft and feminine look that would seem alien to her Starbuck character (Sorry Katee).

Steal Katee's Short Hair Style

Katee Sackhoff

Katee's short bob style for her role as Starbuck is built upon a foundation of precision perfect lines flow into shorter defined angled sides to a straight back that has more length.  A deep side part results in a sleek draping of sleek shiny hair that hugs one side of her face.  The other side is slicked back behind the ear with the ends directed forward towards her chiseled face.

Steal Katee's stunning short style with the following steps:

1. Start with a precision short cut that takes into consideration your own face shape, hair type, texture and condition.

2.  To duplicate Katee's sleek Starbuck look, shampoo hair with a shampoo designed to address your hair's special needs.  If you color, highlight or chemically treat your hair, select a shampoo that supports those treatments.  If you prefer, use a dilution formula or a conditioning only (CO) treatment.
3.  Apply the appropriate rinse-out conditioners.  (Avoid if hair is super thin or fine).
4.  Finish with a cool/cold water rinse to close cuticles and encourage natural shine.
5.  Towel blot and apply cocktail of desired leave-in detangling/conditioning or styling products (mousse, gel, glaze).
6.  To style, hair is parted deep on one side.  Using a blow dryer with a concentrator nozzle, hair is blow dried with a paddle brush for a super sleek finish.
7.  Once hair is 100% dry use fingers to finish style and direct hair behind one ear.  Opt for a dab of pomade or styling cream to finish ends and keep them sleekly in place.
8.  For super watt shine, apply a tiny drop of shine spray or drops to the palms of hands and lightly swipe over the top of the style.

Red Carpet Short Haired Sass

For her Red Carpet spins, Katee goes Glam Girl with more volume along the top and sides which are finger picked forward to create a sassy frame for her face.  The back is styled in a softly tousled form to add to the saucy star style.

1. Start with a precision short cut that takes into consideration your own face shape, hair type, texture and condition.
2.  To duplicate Katee's Glam Girl pizzazz, shampoo hair with a shampoo designed to  build in natural volume, movement and softness.

Note:  If you color, highlight or chemically treat your strands, select a shampoo that supports those treatments.  If you prefer, use a dilution formula or a conditioning only (CO) treatment.

3.  Apply a light rinse-out conditioner or a product designed to help build in volume, body and movement.  (Avoid this step if tresses are thin or fine).
4.  Finish with a cool/cold water rinse to close cuticles and encourage natural shine.
5.  Towel blot and apply cocktail of desired leave-in detangling/conditioning or styling products (mousse, gel, glaze).
6.  Concentrate volume enhancing products along the roots.
7.  To style, create a short part on one side. Using a blow dryer with a concentrator nozzle, hair is blow dried with a round boar's bristle brush for a volume enhanced finish.
7.  Once hair is 100% dry use fingers to finish style and direct hair around the face.  Use a hot curling iron to slightly turn the ends slightly under along the perimeter of the style.
8.  For super watt shine, apply a tiny drop of shine spray or drops to the palms of hands and lightly brush over the top.  If you prefer, use a very light hairspray for a silky soft finish.

Summary

Whether commanding a war-weary Viper squadron or demonstrating Red Carpet posing savvy, Katee is a true hair warrior. While she might wish for long tresses for Starbuck, she looks fabulous in her stunning short strands.
