Curls Were Wild At 2005 BET Awards
Karen Marie Shelton/Dedicated To FFOS
Date: 7/1/2005

Introduction

Hollywood California was the recent scene of the BET Awards sponsored by BET.com.  The Red Carpet was swarming with celebrities including the likes of Beyonce, Halle Berry, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, to name a few of the dazzling stars that sashayed down the runways.

While Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle made an eye popping trio in their various shades of purple, the more significant trend of the evening was a stunning array of natural styles that incorporated lots of cascading tight curls.

Chante Moore was stunning in an all white lace studded bolero style top and matching wrap skirt with her natural  cinnamon hued curls worn over to one side and clipped right above her right ear.

Miri Ben-Ari - Tousled Ringlets

Miri Ben-Ari, talented Israeli born violinist and 2005 nominee for Best Female Hip Hop was breathtakingly beautiful with a mop of shimmering ringlets and curls.

The "Hip Hop Violinist" as she is called was stunning in a black peekaboo lace trimmed camisole style top with matching satin skirt.  Her natural curls were gently tousled by the wind as she walked the Red Carpet holding her beloved violin.

Halle Berry - Lots Of Sassy Loose Curls

Halle Berry look radiant in a rich cherry gown with a flirty open back and a beautiful jagged skirt.  Her auburn hued hair was worn very full in an au natural style with tons of loose curls cascading down to the tops of her shoulders.

Jada Pinkett Smith who co-hosted the awards with her husband was also a vision of big hair with masses of super tight ringlets and curls that touched the top of her shoulders.  She wore a stunning beaded gown that worked perfectly with her handsome hubby's all white ensemble.

Taraji Henson went with a softer curly look while Beyonce was coiffed with big loose waves that cascaded to the middle of her back.  Alicia Keys wore a soft look with a hint of big waves and curls around the edges.

A few of the celebrities such as Melissa Ford and Kimberly Brooks went for silky straighter tresses.  By far the most prominent hairstyle worn by the ladies was big hair that was tightly curled.

Steal The Look

If you have naturally curly hair, recreate the looks of Halle, Jada and Miri by washing hair, towel blotting until strands are damp and then working a good anti-frizz product like Phytodefrisant from the roots to ends.  You may want to mix a defrisant product with a good styling cream or mousse, depending on your hair's type and texture.

Blow-dry with a long finger diffuser to light and separate curls.  Touch up loose curls with a small barrel curling iron and spray with a lighter hairspray to allow curls to have natural movement and bounce.

(Product to try: John Frieda - Frizz Ease - Corrective Styling Mousse - Curl Reviver w/ Sunscreen).

If you have naturally straight hair, shampoo strands, towel blot and blow dry with a round brush.  Separate hair into 2 inch sections and curl with a medium sized curling iron or hot rollers.  Let hair cool and then tousle lightly with your fingers to create Old Hollywood Glamour.

Summary

Many of the female celebrities at the 2005 BET awards gave validity to the current trend for big hair, soft waves, tight bouncy curls and sassy ringlets.  For 2005 hair is loose and natural - a look that requires less time if you are blessed with God-given curly hair or wavy tresses.
