I first interviewed the lovely Chinese American actress Linda Wang (王憲苓) by phone in 2000.
Although Linda has stayed in touch over the past 14 years since our first interview, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a recent call from her to update me on her latest acting project.
Low Down With John Hawkes
Linda told me she had just finished filming "Low Down" a film directed by Jeff Preiss.
The film stars John Hawke, Taryn Manning, Elle Fannin, Glenn Close and one of my personal favorites, Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).
Written by Topper Lilien and Amy Albany the daughter of Joe Albany, based on her memoir of the same name, “Low Down” is set in the New York jazz scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
John Hawkes, an Oscar nominee for "Winter's Bone" as well as for "The Sessions," "Lincoln" and HBO's "Deadwood" plays legendary jazz pianist Joe Albany.
Albany found early success playing with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, but struggled with heroin addiction later in life.
The film is an in-dept look at the life of pianist Joe Albany from the perspective of his young daughter (Elle Fanning) as she watches him contend with his drug addiction during the 1960s and '70s jazz scene.
Linda Wang In Low Down
Linda (王憲苓) will appear in two different time zones in the film from 1974 to 1976.
As a restaurant owner, her character looks very different than the actress does in person. Her hair is pulled back and her make-up ages her significantly.
Second Time Around With John Hawkes
This is the second time Wang collaborated with Hawkes. They both worked on the HBO hit series "Deadwood."
Linda's role in Low Down is a restaurant owner who is one tough cookie. When she interacts with John during the film, she shows a deep kindness at a low point in his life.
Linda, whose goal has always been to be the very best character actress , told me she was thrilled by the opportunity to work with John for a second time.
In her career, she believes "every acting opportunity, especially if it helps her grow in her craft, is precious." The chance to work with John was definitely career gold for Linda.
She told me "working with John the second time was amazing. I truly respect him as an actor.
John is someone I admire greatly in this profession. He is a great actor and gave this role everything I expected he would. Have is approval is a privilege."
Linda reminded me how careful she is to lavish praise on other actors.
With John she told me "she doesn't say it often, but he is one of the great ones."
Linda believes the film is going to be spectacular and garner a lot of industry praise for John's work.
The delightful actress also had great things to say about the other star studded cast, but was most impressed with the work of Hawkes.
During my initial 2000 interview with the lovely Chinese American actress Linda Wang (王憲苓), who is warm, charming and incredibly funny, she was very forthcoming about her goals as a character actress as well as her desires to continually work on her acting craft.
Although it's been many years since our original interview, Linda's dedication and love of acting has not wavered.
She is a very tenacious person who continues to push herself to improve her craft and strive to be the best character actress possible. Be sure to catch John Hawkes, Linda and the star studded cast in Low Down which is scheduled to be released in 2014.
