Edwin Paul Styling Paste:  A Great Product For Great Styles
by
Jane Bullock
8/11/01

Introduction

In my ongoing search to find more short hair styling products, I discovered Edwin Paul's Styling Paste. I already love the products I've tried from this line, so I knew that this one would probably work out for me as well. As usual, I was right!

Edwin Paul's Styling Paste allows you much more styling flexibility than gels or mousses. Even with thick hair like mine, you can use this product to twist sections of hair, and keeping spikes standing tall and proud are no problem.

The paste itself is intriguing: it's a silvery gray in color, and has the
gooey consistency of actual paste. The resemblance to real paste ends here, however. It's easy to scoop out a tiny dab or a handful, and it is very light in the hair. Amazingly, the great hold it gives does not weigh the hair down, making the hated "Helmet Head!"

Usage

You can use Edwin Paul's Styling Paste every day. I found that applying it to damp hair worked best for me (see How I Tested this Product section), and I loved how easily it can be diffused throughout the hair.

Packaging

The hair paste comes in an opaque 2 oz. Jar. You can see the silver gray of the product through the jar, and the lettering is thin, crisp, and black with the standard Edwin Paul "E.P." logo.

Ingredients

Cornflower extract, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, disodium cocamphodiacetate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, cocamide mipa, glycol stearate, ovum/egg yolk powder, saccharum officianarum/rum, jojoba oil, panthenol, polyquarterium-10, phenoxyethnol, parabens, fragrance, citric acid, CI 19140/ FD&C yellow no. 5, and CI 15985/FD&C yellow no. 6.  Water, propylene glycol, oleth-3, petrolatum, mineral oil, oleth-10
phosphate, oleth-5, oleth-20, ozokerite, oleth-3 phosphate, PVP/PA copolymer, phenyl trimethicone, PEG-45M, aminomethyl propanol, disodium EDTA, benzophenone-4, phenxyethanol, methylparaben, propylparaben, BHT, Fragrance, red 33, blue 1.

Fragrance

The fragrance of Edwin Paul's Styling Paste is light, fresh, and doesn't linger on the hair. It gives the hair an overall freshness and scent of cleanliness.

How I Tested This Product

Here's the situation: in order to keep my spiky hairstyle, I have to get haircuts every 3 weeks. So, by the end of the 3rd week, my spikes get pretty floppy. My hair was in this stage when I decided to try the hair paste.

After washing and towel-drying my hair, I applied about a quarter-size amount (this varies with the length of your hair) to the palms of my hands, rubbed my hands together a la Mr. Myagi prior to healing a karate student's pulled muscle. Then I ran my hands through my hair and then styled it.

At this point, it looked fine, but the true acid test of any hair-styling
product is how it holds up after the hair has dried. I wasn't disappointed; not only did the paste take the 'flop' out of my too-long spikes, but it also gave my hair an overall shine you wouldn't believe!

Another nice feature is that if you choose to brush your hair after the paste has set, you don't get those annoying drifts of 'gel-snow' we are all not-so-fond of.

You can also use the paste on dry hair. I tried this myself, and while it did a good job, I prefer the look I get when I start off with damp hair.

How the Product Held up All Day

We've all tried hair products that produce an instant look, and you walk out of your house feeling pleased with your hair, your sense of style, and the whole world in general. Unfortunately, we've all had that same shocking experience of checking out our 'do late in the day and wanting to put our lunch bags over our heads in shame! So many gels and mousses have just not been able to belly up to the bar of all-day hold. I checked my hair at 9:15pm after initially putting the paste on at 8am; my makeup had gone home
without me, but my hair still looked 8am terrific! That gets a big
 "Woo-hoo!" from me!

Conclusion

I liked this product very much, and was pleased with how easy it was to style my hair with it. I especially appreciated how well it held my hair and made it look healthy and shiny.

Jane's Rating

On my own scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, I give Edwin Paul's Styling Paste a 9.5.
