A Tribute To An Award Winning Hairdresser - Janet
Esther Montgomery
Lees Summit, Kansas
Former hairdresser Janet Esther Montgomery died on
February 15, 2008. Her tribute in the Kansas City
Star caught my eye because of her love of hair.
According to the tribute, Janet was an only girl with
three brothers but she loved to play with other people's
hair including putting pin curls in her little brother
Denny's hair.
She also tried out different hairstyles on her male
model. Her early love of hair which resulted in
her curling and coiffing the hair of her friends and
family lead to enrollment in cosmetology school in 1962.
Her younger daughter Cindy Haus reported that her mom
enjoyed trying out different dye jobs on her own hair
and eventually had "every color of hair in the
rainbow.....red hair, blond hair, black hair".
Janet also won first-place trophy in a hairstyling
competition in the 1960s.
After she left the hairstyling biz she devoted her
time to caring for her kids and working different jobs
including a job at the Prairie View Elementary School in
Lee's Summit where she was dubbed as "the Cookie Lady"
for giving away cookies to kids who couldn't afford
them. She also was a very dedicated grandmother
with a great sense of humor which she kept until the
very end of her life.
This former hairdresser is remembered as a loving,
caring lady who not only gave her heart to the hair
world but to her family and children who she would help
whenever she could.
A full tribute to this lovely women was featured in
the Kansas City Star on Sunday, March 2, 2008.
