Airport Worker Suspended
For Wearing Too Much Hair Gel
As reported by Paul Carey (in the Western Mail in Wales on February
12, 2005) a 20 year old airport check-in worker was suspended for
literally wearing too much gel in his hair.
Carey reported that the over-gelled airport worked,
John Graham, was supported by his friends as well as the GMB union.
Graham's fellow worked protected by arriving for work at the
Stansted Airport in Essex with their hair brushed way up in a
Mohican-style.
Graham's union also protected. Union reps
reported that Graham had already conformed to company dress code by
reducing the amount of gel he used in his hair.
GMB organiser Gary Pearce said the suspension
was "outrageous", adding, "Workers are only ever suspended for gross
misconduct, such as stealing or fighting. It is madness to threaten
a person's living over something like this."
