HairSpray To The Rescue A grandmother living in Beekmantown, New York, used a can of
hairspray to fight off four young male invaders who burst into
her bedroom while she was sleeping. Grabbing her hairspray
that she has kept by her bed, Juliette Jolicoeur sprayed
hairspray right into the intruder's faces.
Jolicoeur confessed that she had thought about using
hairspray as a protective weapon in the past when she lived in a
dangerous area of Florida.
Police nabbed the sprayed suspects shortly after their
attempted robbery and are in custody at the Clinton County Jail
in Beekmantown awaiting trial.
As for Jolicoeur, she was reported thankful for her hairspray
and has decided to keep it close for the future.

Workshop Schedule Changes
There have been some minor schedule changes for this weekend. We
will try and have it up on the website later today, but it will
definitely be available at the office first thing in the morning.
The main things you need to know is that Linda will not be teaching
cockney on Sunday and Annie will not be teaching Victorian
Performing Styles on Saturday. She will instead be teaching on
Sunday in the large room downstairs at Druid's Hall. We have been
trying to find another venue to expand into in case of inclement
weather, but none of the local venues are currently available so
we'll have to wing it.
Emails on the Website
I have requested that Amanda add a page to the website where I
can post the emails. She is currently under deadline on our program
(she is also our graphic designer... and a damn good one) so this
will happen when she has the chance.
Wonderful Web Links
Last year I posted a bunch of cool Dickens oriented websites and
want to re-post them here.
The
Dickens Page: Works & ETexts
Concordances of
Dickens, Charles - 55 Works & E-texts (Search by
keyword in each book!)
David Perdue's
Charles Dickens Page
Dickens'
Works Page (has characters by book and more - very
cool)
Dickens'
Characters Page (alphabetically by character)
The
Dickens Page
A Journal of
the Life of Charles Dickens
The
Dickens Society
PEERS Links Page
(incredible lots o' links!)
Rides Needed
Two people are in desperate need of rides this weekend and one
does not have access to a computer. They are one of our wonderful
pianists, Len Pardoe and an amazing Music Hall singer, back this
year by popular demand, Sean Sharp. Both live in San Francisco. If
you can help, please reply to me and I will give you their contact
info. Thanks.
Yahoo Ride Board
I have created a yahoo web page on which to post if you are
looking for, or looking to offer rides to the workshops or the Cow
Palace. It's also a mailing list, but I think the way it's set up,
you will only receive email replies to your postings, not everyone
else. It's not listed on their main listing page but you should be
able to join just by clicking the join button. Please keep it clean
and enjoy! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DCF2001/
Parking Passes
Just a reminder that each of the parking passes cost us $30.00,
so if you lose it you will need to purchase another for $30.00.
Moral of the story.....
Stage Crew Needed for V&A
We are in need of backstage personnel to help with moving props
and scenery at the V&A Stage. Stage Crew will wear blacks while
working backstage, rather than costumes, but will need to have
costumes when out on the streets. Please respond to me if you are
interested.
Adventurer's Club Staff
The Adventurer's Club is looking for serving staff. If they can
get 6-8 people, the work should be pretty light and leave you the
rest of the day to do other fun things at the Fair. Costume will be
simple black skirts or trousers with white shirts (and Mob Caps for
the ladies). Contact Mike Young at RenKnt58@aol.com
Theme Characters Drills
These are for all theme characters. Please meet Therese Porter
and Rydell Downward at 2:30 Saturday on the front porch of Druid's
Hall and will follow them to the location they will be using .
Game Booths are Hiring
Our game booths are hiring and this year will include a
miniature carousel as well as other fun things! Please contact
Leslie Patterson regarding these at leslie@themeevents.com
Betty's Birthday
Our very own Betty Simmons (Betty Stilts, Christmas Angel, Ghost
of Christmas Past) turns 60 on opening day and would love to have
you help her celebrate. Nothing specific has been planned... but she
says hugs are especially appreciated!
Martin Harris Recordings
Our own, our very own British actor Martin Harris, (better known
to many as the Morris Fool at Faire) is flying back from the heart
of Dickens country to play Ebenezer Scrooge, and has a double
cassette album of his reading the complete unedited original
manuscript of A Christmas Carol. Martin grew up in Gravesend Kent
where Charles Dickens honeymooned, wrote four books including Great
Expectations set in that area and died, in his favourite
house.
As Martin was a BBC radio broadcaster and is a voice over actor,
this version will allow you to get more familiar with the accent and
story line, and makes a wonderful present to encourage friends and
family to come to our great Dickens Fair.
The album which costs $20 is available at the merchandise booth
and will help Martin meet some of his expenses to be here with us.

- In Memory Of Celebrated Platform Artist - Xenon
He was one of the most celebrated and
successful platform artists and educators in the modern hairdressing
world. Although he passed away in early 2001 at the age of 57 from
pancreatic cancer, the memory of this flamboyant hair master lives
on through the Xenon Foundation which he created before his death.
Born to a family of hairdressers,
"Xenon", born as Peter Michael Franelli, entered the
hairdressing trade at age 12. He apprenticed with Vidal Sasson
among others and became famous for his work.
Xenon's work was recognized in numerous
fashion magazines including British Vogue and he was one of the
developers of the "Twiggy" look in the late '60s.
Xenon migrated to Australia in the 1970s where he rapidly became
that continent's best-known hairdressers.
During a late '70s educational tour
sponsored by Pivot Point International, Xenon fell in love with the
U.S. and made it his permanent home. Becoming an American
citizen in 1990 was, he reported "one of the proudest moments
of my life".
Established to honor his life and help
hairdressers in need, the Xenon Foundation will grant support funds
to hair and beauty professionals burdened with catastrophic costs
related to serious or terminal illnesses.
"His life was a blessing" said
Farouk Systems' Farouk Shami, who with Bob Peel, Ken Mammini of Nova
Salon Systems, Katherine Frank, Creative's Frank Cacciato and Pivot
Point's Leo Passage, is a Foundation Organizer.
The Xenon Foundation is his final tribute to the industry that he
cherished. It is his way of continuing to care for hairdressers as
he did for 3 decades. This foundation is a tribute to a man who gave
his whole life towards the advancement of others. The Xenon
Foundation is a foundation dedicated to helping fellow hairdressers
stricken with a terminal illness who can not earn a living.
Hairdresser's incomes are solely determined by their ability to
perform client services. Hairdressers sometimes have no one to turn
to, no benefits, no credit union or bank to borrow money from in
times of need. Xenon knew that unfortunately, many in the
salon industry have no insurance.
In addition to helping others in a time of need, the Xenon
foundation will provide scholarships for individuals to attend a
beauty school of their choice.
Donations directed to the Xenon Foundation
can be mailed to the attention of Janice McCafferty, The Xenon
Foundation, 5010 W. Newport Ave., Chicago, IL 60641. For
more information, call 773-736-9034 or e-mail Janice at
JRM@aol.com.
