JerkyFlea: September 1999

Author: JerkyFlea

Name That Celebrity!

I suspected that last month may be too easy if I included that the singer in the second picture sang backup for The Freak Formerly Known As Michael Jackson.  Judging by the overwhelming number of correct entries, it look like I was right.  Oh, well, them's the breaks.  For the few that didn't guess them correctly, the mystery celebrities were...

Mystery Celebrity #1: ALANIS MORRISETTE

Mystery Celebrity #2: SHERYL CROW

Sheryl had some damn big hair didn't she?  How the heck did she get that through doorways?  Though that particular quandary remains unanswered, her identity and that of the teeny-bopper Alanis posed no problem for the first correct guesser...

Shawn!

Yup, just Shawn.  Like Cher, except that he's a guy and has fewer costume changes.  As for the rest of the correct guessers, the next nine in order were Vanessa Cordero, KellyAnn Hagendoorn (an amazingly consistent winner), Allison, Susan Sundsbak, Barry Benintende, Bcatc19, MOrab, Jennifer Morgan, and Carrie Blacker.

vvv

On to this month's contest.  As usual, I give you either a picture of a celebrity from early in their life or career with some completely different look or I disguise a current picture.  You then have to tell me who the celebrity in question is.  Simple enough?  Of course.

This time we go back to those horrible high school pictures and hopefully I picked two that will be a challenge.

So, tell me, who are the two celebrities who'd like to forget these photos were taken?

Mystery Celebrity #1:

Mystery Celebrity #2:

Only hint this time is that one is a singer and one is an actress.  In fact, even that is probably too much information.  Pretend I didn't write it.

As usual, THE FIRST PERSON to send me the correct answer for both gets a hearty virtual handshake and pat on the back...and their name featured in the next column.  The next nine just get their name in the column.  Sure, it's a subtle difference, but those yellow letters don't come cheap.  Good Luck!

Did Ya Know?

This month's tidbit concerns a haircut that didn't actually happen.  If you remember a couple of columns ago, the Did Ya Know? was on Nancy Allen's haircut to portray a future cop in "RoboCop" and I said that she should be thankful that she didn't have James Cameron as a director, since, in "Aliens", he had the women in his Space Marines get crewcuts.

Apparently, James believes that women with buff bods look more convincing with short hair.  Case in point, "Terminator 2", starring his future ex-wife LINDA HAMILTON.  According to the backstory, in the time period between when the first and second movies take place, Linda's character, Sarah Conner had been confined to a mental institution.  Sarah makes good use of her time while confined, exercising herself into phenomenal shape and quite the muscular physique.

At the time, Linda's blonde hair was quite long, falling to midback.  James wanted her to cut it short, thinking that it would be more in tune with the character's new harder, aggressive look and attitude.  Linda refused, saying that shearing her long locks to crop would make the character appear much too masculine and too much of a departure from her initial portrayal of Sarah in the original "Terminator".

Thankfully, Linda won out, since 1) her character would have looked WAY too butch with a short cut and 2) she looked terrific with the long hair.

By the way, as you probably know,  James and Linda have gone their separate ways, with James abandoning Linda for Suzy Amis (the granddaughter in "Titanic").  I guess it's vaguely ironic that Suzy has just recently finally regrown her red hair very long after cutting it short from extremely long a few years back.  What the heck am I talking about?  Wait until next month. J

As usual,
