Geena Davis:  Diamond Studded Ponytail

Author: Karen Marie Shelton

Date: 09/05/06

Geena Davis is a winner in all areas of her life.  Besides winning the esteemed Oscar Award for Accidental Tourist she recently won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of the first woman president in Commander In Chief.

Celebrity Hairdresser Robert Hallowell has been working with Geena's hair since he first met her on the set of the movie Angie some years back.

Robert adores Geena and even though working on a TV set is very grueling (think 18-20 hour days with lots of pressure) he gladly signed on to be the head hairdresser for Commander In Chief.

Being the head hairdresser entails working with the producers to honor the vision of the show.  It also meant that Robert coiffed Geena's hair on a constant basis.  Constant being defined as just about every minute of every day that she was filming on set.

It also meant that Robert coiffed Geena's hair for her appearances on The Ellen Degeneres show and her appearances on Red Carpets for various award show.

Even though Commander In Chief has been sadly cancelled (I adored the show) Robert will continue to work with Geena for her various appearances.  He confirmed that he will also be working with her on the new Commander pilot that is still in the works.

After all these years of working with Geena's hair Robert has a special insight into how to whip her strands into absolutely perfection.

I caught up with Robert via cell phone to get the scoop on Geena's Emmy hairdo as he made his way to the sand, surf and sea in Mexico for a much needed rest.

Robert coiffed his long time client - Geena Davis - who he reported "was decked out in approximately $16 million dollars worth of spectacular diamonds".   Her "borrowed" diamond booty consisted of a stunning lariat style necklace set in a rose gold hue with matching earrings.

The diamonds to the Emmy nominated star by the famed Hip Hop diamond designer Ayre. Robert explained he put his head together with Geena's longtime stylist - Vivian Turner - to create a very long, lean and sleek look that worked with all those eye popping sparklers.

The Gorgeous Ponytail

To carry the theme of Geena's custom made couture tuxedo (designed specifically for women vs the traditional man's tux) Robert, Vivian (and of course Geena) agreed to go with a very high pony (yes ponytails are still hot in the hair fashion world) that Robert anchored tight at Geena's crown "just above her occipital bone" and elevated even higher by wrapping a thick strand of hair around the base.

Customized Stuart Weitzman 4" heels completely encrusted with gorgeous white crystals were worn by Geena as the finishing touch to all the sparkling spendor.

Robert also pumped up Geena's "red hues" right before the event with Goldwell colors.  For her "permanent base" color Robert reported that he used Goldwell Top Chic.

For added brilliance he added Goldwell Colorance (Level 7).  Robert confirmed that he uses Goldwell color on Geena all the time.

I queried him on what color he would describe the star's hair as being.  Robert reported that he would describe the hue as "a right orange red with wonderful woodsy undertones".

He noted "Geena has gorgeous creamy white skin" which he pointed out works better with red hues that have an bright orange base.  Robert told me "Geena's skin clashes with the reds that have a blue base" and "anyone thinking about going with a red color should definitely pay attention to how the color would work with the skin tone".

Since the ultimate goal was to create a fresh, clean, sleek, long look, Robert wanted to make Geena's hair sleek and slicked back off her face to avoid any type of clash with those gorgeous gems she wore around her neck and in her ears.

Robert first applied his straightening balm (The Flat Factor) to Geena's towel blotted damp strands.  Then he dried Geena's hair stick straight using a boar's head brush (Mason Pearson) and a blow dryer.  He directed the air-flow of the dryer down the shaft of her hair from the roots to the ends.

Note:  Robert has been using his famous Kitchen Beautician products on Geena's hair - which he has been doing since he first created the product line.

Once Geena's hair was 100% dry he used a flat iron to make sure that all of her strands were perfectly straight.  He applied his Dream Cream styling cream to the sides of Geena's hairline to give the hair a slightly textured but sleek look.  Robert created a "teeny tiny part on the left side measuring approximately 2 1/2" long from her forehead".

He pulled the ponytail very high making sure that the crown was perfectly smooth and wrinkle free.  After he had finished creating the pony he applied a few drops of his applied a few Love That Shine Drops to the balms of his hands and fingers.  He then carefully raked through the finished pony with the Shine Drops to add a glassy shimmer to the strands.

MIA On The Red Carpet?

From Past Emmy Awards

Sadly the beautiful star wearing the eye popping, mouth dropping array of diamond sparklers was nowhere to be seen on the Red Carpet before the show. Although the cameras panned by her in the audience at the Emmys, there were no real close-ups.  Even more disappointing the brilliant actress did not win the Emmy award for her category.

According to Robert, the reason Geena was a Red Carpet MIA was due to a major traffic and security checkpoint jam which caused a bottleneck on the strollways making it difficult for the major stars to sashsay down the carpet. Geena unfortunately got caught in the loggerjam even though she left for the show at 3:30 in the afternoon.

The good news?  Thanks to Robert and the good folks at MultiMedia Mags we were able to get a few photos of the beautiful red-haired star.
