The Short Hair Diva

Introduction

Ok, what’s up with all the buzz I’m hearing about gray hair? From what I’ve heard, some of you out there with gray hair feel you must cover it at all costs, some find it flattering on them, and others even consider each gray strand a badge of honor.

Babies, listen to the Diva. It’s all about choice. One of the most attractive women I know is in her mid-thirties, and has long ash-gray hair cut to sweep across her shoulders. It highlights her light skin and ocean-blue eyes, and she looks fabulous. Obviously this is not the case for everyone. If you choose to cover your gray, then do what the Diva does: do your homework. When it comes to your hair, never act on impulse! This is not the time to stride into a strange salon, and demand they take years off your look by coloring your gray hairs carrot red.

When you think of coloring your hair, first consider your skin tone (and if you don’t have a clue, go to a cosmetician to find out). As popular as red hair is, not everyone can carry it off. If, for example, your skin tone is winter, which means you tend toward cool colors like bright white, true red, purple, turquoise, black, and silver; then red (a warm tone) hair may give the impression that your skin and hair are fighting with each other. If you do decide to have your hair colored, do go to a stylist who knows (and is licensed) what he/she is doing.

Never leave your hair to chance!

Question

Dear Diva,

Hi! My hair now is shoulder length and it's really killing me! I  can't stand it no more. I need a change. I really really wanna cut my hair real short. But the problem is, I have a round face. My face will look big if I cut too short. But the is the cut that I really want! The really short one.

By the way, I am Chinese and I have a rather small eyes, a round face and black hair.

What do you suggest I should do? Please help me. I can't stand  long hair no more!

Thanks.

Lee Tin

Answer

Sweet Lee Tin,

Welcome to the about-to-be-short-hair-club! I know you want to cut your hair right now, but do yourself a BIG favor and go to a professional stylist (if you have one already, great! If not, get one--this is no job for a non-professional!). Take the time to talk with him/her about what you want,  your lifestyle (how much time do you want to devote to hair care each day?), and maintenance (short hair means getting trimmed every 4-6 weeks, depending on the style).

Do not defy The Diva on this one--it will make *all* the difference.

Now--why would you think your round face would look larger with short  hair? Given the right cut, it would be sooooooo flattering! For example, you can have your hair cut so that you have longer pieces in front of your ears that swing forward, making a "C" on each cheek. This automatically gives the illusion of those attractive hollows under the cheekbones. How about one of the new sliced shags? If you're interested, please read Karen's article on them at If you choose to have bangs as well, then you can play up those eyes to make them look larger if you like.

If you like, since your hair is already shoulder length, you can even have the stylist save a long strand of hair for you to braid or bead to add a hip and unique look to your new short hairdo. Don't forget to check out the Hair Gallery for all the cute shorthair styles in there; it may help to take a picture to your stylist to help her.

Good luck, and please let The Diva know what you decided to do!

Bye Bye for now,

The Diva

Dear Diva,

Thanks a lot for the advice. I still haven't decided what to do.

Well I was thinking of cutting my hair really really short as in like Pink's haircut. Do you know who Pink is? She's this new singer.  Well, I do like what you suggested. The hairstyle I mean.

Well, about the professional help, it may cost... LOL. I always get my haircut at my aunt's . She's a  hairstylist. I'm not sure if she's a good one. But she 's ok. But she lives quite far.

Thanks a lot.
