Short Hair for 2001! |

Introduction
Hello, sweet things—did everyone have a lovely
New Year?
This brand new year, 2001, holds more promise
than ever for fabulous new short hairstyles. Have you ever noticed
that what was once old is now new? Witness the rebirth of the 70’s
shag, for instance. (And, Heaven help us, those awful platform shoes!)
Well, the Diva predicts 2001 as THE most fabulous year ever for short
hair. Just look at all the celebs in the mags if you don’t believe
me. Even Jennifer Anniston has cut her famous long locks.
Take Anne Hecht’s little blonde
‘do—there’s a gal who can change her look from fetching castaway
with Harrison Ford to high-maintenance client on Ally McBeal with a
few flicks of her brush. The sides were fluffed forward, and the ends
below her ears pulled forward to create a cute gamine look.
Check out
Jerky
Flea’s column and see some of your favorite celebrity gals
sporting newer, shorter do’s; Cate Blanchard’s (very short,
head-hugging, and charming), Rachel Lee Cook’s (white-blonde, punky,
very cute), Deborah Norville’s (her new, shorter ‘do does wonders
for those great eyes and lips), and wife of dreamy David Duchovny, Tea
Leoni’s (sleek, playful, and quite style-y). Now, take a closer look
at those pictures. Notice anything else new about these women?
They’re smiling! And do you know why? Because they not only look
stylish and pretty, but they don’t have to deal with a complicated
hairdo!
Do some research, and use your own imagination.
For example, I found that my own hair likes to grow in a point at the
back of my neck, so all attempts at making my backhair behave in a
nice, orderly fringe just does not
work. So, during that last haircut, I asked my hairdresser to shape
the back into three points; one at the back of my neck, and one point
under each ear.
The Diva has told you time and time again that
true beauty is rare, but most beauty is illusion. That illusion can be
created in the tiniest ways, too—you’d be surprised. Now, without
buying a wig, detachable ponytail, or growing out your own hair, how
can you change your look? Make it a challenge.
Ask yourself these questions:
·
New hair color?
·
New
Hair Care products?
·
Streaks?
·
High/Lowlights?
·
Hair
accessories?
There’s nothing like a brand new year to make
you take stock of yourself and your own personal look. If you’re
blonde, consider having some lighter highlights put in around your
face. If your hair is dark, lighter highlights may not work for you;
check out lowlights (a lighter color than your overall color) for an
effective and eye-catching change of pace. Redheads—lucky you! Try
gold, silver, or copper highlights to sizzle up that gorgeous color.
The lovely ladies with gray, silver, or salt and pepper hair can
benefit from highlights, lowlights, streaks, or just a quick
application of hair shine to brighten your look.
*(One gal we know who is in her seventies jazzed up her white
hair with mauve streaks at the temples, and looks fabulous!) There are
several great hairproducts on the market that can give you instant
permanent and
temporary
color, glitters and hairpaints, and extra shine.
Also babies—the Diva has told you time and time
again that proper rest, good grooming habits, attention to facial hair
(a-hem!!), and skillful use of makeup does WONDERS for your
appearance. Are you listening to the Diva? Anyone out there STILL
going to bed without removing your mascara? Ouch—I can hear your
skin screaming! Speaking of good self-maintenance, if you don’t do
this already, start immediately: go buy yourself a 3X, 5X, or 7X (or
more, if your eyesight is going) mirror and a good pair of tweezers.
Position the mirror in good light and tidy up those eyebrows, stray
chin and nose hairs, and work on that little Fu Manchu mustache we are
all fighting. Bleaching is not generally a good option—get in the
sunlight and you’re not fooling anyone.
A word for those of you who have not changed
their hairstyle in years—now’s the time! An outdated hairstyle can
detract from your good looks. If you fear the stylist, try a session
of digital/graphic hair imaging to try out different looks before you
actually commit to a hair appointment. It’s a lot like buying a car;
check out your options before you buy!
Well, that’s all for now, my lovelies. Keep
well, keep up those good habits, and have FUN with your hair! After
all, this IS 2001!

Question #1:
Boring Short Hair
Dear Diva,
I adore short hair but I am stumped with my
current short bob style. I can never get my style to look
different. Can you recommend a style that allows me flexibility
for my oval shaped face? I am bored with the same old look day in and
day out.
Please help!
Bored Badly in Boston
Answer
Dear Bored,
The key to cool for you is
aerodynamics.
Ask your stylist to give
you a classic "aero cut". This is a multi-layered cut
with a neat, short shape underneath and longer layers on
top.
Trust me doll, this
definite, silhouette style will allow you to style your hair in so
many different ways it will make your pretty little head swim.
You can wear the aero style straight and sleek, slicked back,
twisted or crimped. Add tiny curls to the longer layers and do a
Justin Timberlake. Whatever.

Question
#2: Short Hair Agonies
Dear Diva,
When I leave the house
every day my short shag looks fine. By the time I spend a few
hours at work a pesky little cowlick will pop up on the side of my
bangs. I also battle flyaways and bangs that just won't
behave. Should I just shave my head and get rid of my hair
agonies?
Jessica
Answer
Dearest Jessica,
Nothing could be easier,
sweetie! Pop a small bottle of
spray-on
volume mist or
shaping
spray in your purse and viola, you have instant hair emergency
help. Spritz some spray-on volume mist or spray on gel on
your cowlick, smooth it down with a tiny paddle brush and viola, death
to the bad hair. A good shaping spray will also smooth down
flyaways.
Happy spraying. Bah-bye.

Question #3: Shine On
Dear Diva,
My short hair is dull as
dishwater. How do I get a great shine? Any suggestions from your
bag of tricks?
Donna
Answer
Dear AB,
Darling girl it is
simple. Get a cut with long layers or get a blunt cut.
Long layers offer larger areas of unbroken surface. This
increases shine potential. A blunt cut will add instant
shine. You can also cheat a little with a
spray
on shine product. Don't worry, its our little secret.
Remember to spray the shine product into the palms of your hands and
then smooth down over the top of your hair.
Kisses,
The Diva
Well, babies, that’s it for now. The Diva wishes you all happy
and heavenly short hair days.
