Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Personal
Care for Every Body
by Dina Falconi, Alan McKnight, David Goldbeck
Dina Falconi is founder of Falcon Formulations which is a line of herbal skin
and hair care products. She is also co-founder of Earthly Extract Medicinal Tinctures.
Dina is not only a practicing clinical herbalist, but she is also a former instructor who
taught at the Albany Medical College. This woman is very active in national and
international herbal conferences and in woman's groups. She knows her stuff. This book
proves that she knows a lot about having wonderful hair.
Her book provides information on shampoos, rinses and oils. While she provides
some really nice home shampoo recipes, I was most impressed with her section on hot oils.
She has a great rosemary olive hair oil that I tried as I was reviewing the book. Her
Rosemary Olive Oil is simple to make It takes 1 ounce of cold pressed olive oil and 30
drops of rosemary essential oil. I decided to heat the olive oil first and then apply the
rosemary oil. I slathered it all over my ends and my hair, apply 2 plastic shower caps and
a very hot towel right out of the clothes dryer (my own special trick). I left the oil on
for 1 hour and then used Aveda Shampure to remove the oil. My hair feels soft and very
silky.
She has several other recipes that I will try. Under the Herbal Infused Hair Oil
section she offers a Sage, Rosemary and Thyme Hair oil along with a Chamomile and
Calendula Hair oil. Her book contains some great vinegar recipes for hair. She has a
"defunk" vinegar recipe for hair with lots of toxins or other gunk problems. She
also has a section on how to make your own hair pomades and she has treatments for hair
loss.
For hair loss and balding she provides her own recipe for a bald head balm which
includes coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, jojoba oil and essential oils (rosemary, sage,
sandalwood and nettle, comfrey or burdock). It is a great recipe and one that I have not
seen before. She also discusses how her other hair recipes will help hair loss.
I enjoyed this book. Not only does she have some very practical and good hair
recipes, she has lots of other great herbal remedies for facials, massage oil and for
various health complaints. The book is well written and the recipes contain ingredients
that are not too difficult to find.
I highly recommend this book. I certainly enjoyed it and thought it was worth the
price.
Happy herbal brewing.
