Black Hair Is: The Complete Hair Care Guide For Today's Black Woman

Black Hair Is: The Complete Hair Care Guide For Today's Black Woman

by Marilyn Singleton

This book is still available from Amazon.com although it is back ordered and may take 3 weeks or so.  This is a small book and somewhat expensive.  I paid $9.95 for my used copy at Powell's in Portland, Oregon.  The original price of the book was $14.95. Amazon.com will still sell a new version for their normal discount.

Marilyn Singleton wrote this book to address the hair care needs of Black women. Although the book is rather small, there are a lot of gromming, nutrition, maintenance and health tips for having beautiful and healthy hair.  Photographs of hairstyles created by nationally-acclaimed stylists are included.  The photos are black and white only.

The book covers how to find a good stylist that specializes in black hair care, hair appliances, creating volume for thin hair, hair growth and styling options and care for press and curl, natural, relaxers, curly perms, Afroesque, texturizers, cornrows and braids.  There is also a good overview on hair color including glazes and jazzing.

If you have Black hair or an interest in working with it, this book does offer some good tips.  I found the information on hair color to be very informative.  There is a very clear explanation of how hair color can permanently alter the hair texture and shape of Black hair.

Overall I would recommend this book to people with a specific interest in Black hair.
