Miss America: In Pursuit of the Crown
by Ann-Marie Bivans, Introduction by Leonard C. Horn
This book is a remarkable work which traces the history of the Miss America
program and brings you directly to the events that changed the standards for Miss America
over the years.
This is book about America's number one beauty pagent. However, it is also
a great respective of hairstyles starting with Miss America 1926 until Miss America of
1991. I was fascinated with all the photos of the various beauty queens over the
years and the history behind the pagent.
If you love beauty pagents or photos of hairstyles of beauty queen winners over
the last 70 years you will love this large hard cover book. It actually could work
as a traditional "coffee table" book because of its large sive and diamond
encrusted tiara on the front cover. This book has all the trivia on the pagent
including black and white photos of all the winners from the beginning until 1991 when
this book was published. It also has lots of good scoops on how the judges are
picked, what happens right after the winner is selected and interesting facts about
various scandals that have occurred over the years including the famous Vanessa Williams
scandel.
There are only a few color photographs in the book. The rest of the many
photos are black and white, but they are well done and very interesting.
I actually enjoyed this book. Not only did I love looking at all the
photographs, but I was fascinated with some of the behind the scenes information on past
winners.
I would strongly recommend this book. It is well worth the money if you
can find a published version. Be sure and check out all the big hair and the giant
curls on some of the former winners. You will be amazed that hair that looked like
that was ever so popular.
