Since 2003 I've been writing a series of articles, tips and published articles about celebrity hairstylist Robert Hallowell.

This blog is dedicated to my very special memories of Robert Hallowell's best hair recipes.

Everyone seemed to have a pet name for the hair superstar.  I usually called him Robert, Raw and sometimes Robair.

The Sudden Passing Of A Beloved Hair Guru

On November 22, 2015, the much loved hair guru passed away very suddenly at the age of 55.  His death was a shock to all his adoring family, friends, celebrity clients and hair industry connections.

The out pouring of love and adoration on Robert's Facebook page was both heartbreaking and truly inspirational.

His life was a never ending series of thoughtful gestures.  Whether he shared a kind word, his dazzling smile or presented a delightful gift, his actions were always designed to spread joy and love.

Robert always had time to send out his unconditional kindness and thoughtfulness.

After Robert's sudden passing I started to go back through all of my notes from our many phone interviews, chats, emails, texts and Facebook messages.

I discovered so many amazing hair and beauty gems, I can't imagine how I could fit all of them into even one blog.

The good news is I am a huge pack rat, saving every note I scribbled about my talks with him.  The bad news is how to organize my massive Robert collection.

For the purpose of this blog, I decided to focus on Robert's best hair recipes.

He had tons which he used regularly to supplement his amazing Prawduct Hair Care Line.

Honestly, I have tried all of them over the years and they all worked for my below-the-waist naturally wavy/curly hair.

They may not work for everyone, but they still work on my hair even after years of whipping them up in my kitchen.

Listed below are some of Robert's signature Kitchen Beautician (as his friends and clients called him) recipes.

At Home Hair Saver Formula

This miraculous easy-to-do recipe from Robert was designed to instantly revive lackluster and brittle locks.

The orange peel and vodka will create tons of shine, while the avocado and olive oil will make dry hair feel silky.

Ingredients

1 orange peel, finely chopped

1/2 avocado, mashed

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 tablespoon vodka

HowTo

Boil 1 cup of water, then add orange peel and remove from heat.

Let the mixture cool for 30 minutes.

Pour the water into the blender, add the other ingredients, then blend on high until the contents turn into a sauce.

Work through freshly shampooed and towel-dried hair, then cover your head with a shower cap.

Leave on hair for 25 minutes.

Rinse with warm water, then shampoo again using a very gentle formula.

Shine Booster For Your Hair

I asked Robert if he thought there are particular times of the year hair was most at risk of damage.  He told me "hair takes a beating all winter long due to daily heat styling (since it's too cold to go out with wet hair) and over-heated indoor air (which saps all the moisture out of your strands). "

Robert suggested "mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons" of my regular shampoo "to make your locks soft and shine again".

Why?  Robert explained "the baking soda changes the pH of the shampoo so it becomes really deep-cleaning."

After applying the baking soda enhanced shampoo to wet hair, Robert suggested "gently massaging the scalp using a soft-bristled brush."

Finally, after rinsing the shampoo out of the hair, he suggested applying an "apple cider vinegar final rinse" to add an instant boost of shine."

Robert was also a big advocate of the final cold water rinse.

Blasting Hair Product Buildup

Another benefit of baking soda?  Robert explained it "naturally removed product build-up" and acted "as a de-gluer".

For hair suffering from lots of styling product buildup Robert suggested amping up the baking soda mix from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon making sure to completely shake the shampoo for the best results.

To minimize hair product build-up Robert recommended using styling sprays with minimal silicone.  Yes, hair serums add shine, but at what cost?

Silicone, won't easily wash away, causing long-term build-up, dullness and possible damage.

His motto was always "less is more."

Robert's Love That Shine Spray had a very light natural silicone which penetrated the cuticle and helped to fill in any holes "so hair reflects maximum shine."

Clean & Shine Honey Mask

Ingredients

2 tablespoons vodka

2 tablespoons honey

1/2 avocado, mashed

1 egg yolk (not white)

HowTo

Mash ingredients together in a glass bowl with a fork until creamy. Apply mixture to freshly shampooed towel-dried hair and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Shampoo and condition lightly, then style as usual.

Vodka removes buildup of scalp oils or styling products.  Honey and avocado moisturizes.  Egg yolk smooths and conditions the hair shaft as well as the scalp.

Since Robert worked on a dizzying array of movie and TV sets, he had to guarantee "perfect hair" when the lights hit it.

One of his secrets was to "use a baby toothbrush prepped with a dab of styling cream to smooth fly-a-ways or other hair sins."

His favorite hair cream was his own Prawduct Dream Cream, but in a pinch he would reach for products with minimal silicone and alcohol.

A Heady Hair Brightening Brew

Robert knew I loved to play with an array of fresh herbs and essential oils.  We had that in common.

His Prawduct hair care line, founded in 2003, utilized an array of essential oils including orange and basil.  They also included organic honey, apples and a custom fruit complex.

Hallowell loved fresh chamomile herbs which he explained "adds highlights and shine to blonde to medium-brown hair and soothes irritated scalps".

Another favorite of his was "lavender oil mixed with yogurt to add gorgeous shine."  Robert also loved fresh lavender herbs as well.

He used his custom brightened recipe to enhance the blonde locks of many of his famous celebrities, including mine.

Robert applied the formula to my hair on one of my visits to his home salon.

Ingredients

6 chamomile tea bags (organic when possible or lose fresh herbs equivalent to 6 tea bags)

1/2 cup plain yogurt

5 drops lavender oil (available online or at many health-food stores)

1 cup water

HowTo

Boil water in a glass saucepan.  Turn off heat, add tea bags, and let steep for 20 minutes.

Remove bags, add yogurt and lavender oil.  Mix well.  Shampoo hair and towel-dry to remove excess moisture.

Apply mixture to hair and scalp; cover hair in plastic wrap or put on a shower cap. Let sit for 20 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water and lightly shampoo.  This recipe can be used up to twice weekly to alleviate dryness and 3-4 times a week to lighten color.

Daily Hair Tip
When towel drying wet hair never rub hair roughly or twist up into a towel. This will potentially damage delicate hair cuticles. Instead carefully blot hair with superabsortant towel and squeeze hair gently to remove moisture.
