Natural Hair Styles Texture Formation

Natural Hair Styles Texture Formation

One of the primary goals for anyone with naturally textured hair ranging from straight to naturally curly, wavy or coily is to manage it's styling definition so that it has a beautiful natural form and flow. When it comes to natural hair styles there are no rules, no right or wrong ways to define natural texture.

Natural hair styles can be relaxed and playful for weekend wear.  They can honor cultural trends or be appropriate for corporate or professional environments.  Natural hair styles can also be sassy, sexy and tousled.  Or they can also be beautifully and elegant.

One popular styling technique utilized for creating natural hair styles is working with the natural flow and clumping patterns of curls, coils and waves to create beautiful elongated ringlets.    Natural hair styles embellished with ringlets are a perfect way to honor natural texture.

Ringlets can be created systematically on natural waves, curls and coils.  They can also be created on naturally straight strands.  Styling ringlets works around the concept of reshaping and gently controlling the formation of the hair's natural profile.

Ringlet Curling Technique

A popular technique which has been utilized for many years by natural hair stylists is known as ringlet curling.  It's also sometimes referred to as skip curling.  Regardless of what it's called, the technique systemically helps to shape natural curls while creating ringlets on natural waves or straight strands.

Advantages And Disadvantages

With every natural hair styling system there are both advantages and disadvantages. This is the case with ringlet curling.

Advantages

Ringlet curling, when done in an organized and systematic pattern with the proper styling products and the appropriately sized sections of hair turn out beautifully.  The hairstyle honors the natural born texture, it helps separate curls, controls frizz and has long lasting endurance.    It also serves as a base for other natural hair styles.

Natural hairstyles offer the flexibility of fluidity and looseness.  They can be classic and timeless.  Natural hairstyles often blend both modern and traditional techniques as inspiration.

Disadvantages

The disadvantage with ringlet curling is that it requires methodical finger twirling on equal sized sections of hair on the entire head.  As a result, it can be very time consuming.

This is especially true if the hair to be finger curled is long, thick or requires a lot of product be applied to each individual section before it's finger curled.

While it's possible to group different sized sections of hair to create a different natural hair style, it is still a time consuming operation.

Step-By-Step Ringlet Curling Technique

1. Start with towel blotted, wet and newly cleansed hair which has been completely detangled.

2. Always detangle hair before applying any styling products, to guarantee the products will work effectively. It's also important to apply any styling cocktail to strands which are still wet in order to be able to control and manipulate natural curls, waves and coils the way you want.

3. Use a long detangling comb with smooth teeth.  Starting at one side of the head separate hair into a 1-3 inch horizontal section depending on how tight or loose a curl you wish to create.

4.  Apply a light application of styling cream, gel or mousse to the newly created section.  Use fingers or comb to make sure the product is completely distributed through the section.

5.  Lift up the section with your fingers.  Starting right at the root twist the new section around your index or forefinger.  In essence you will be using your fingers as a type of hair roller or curler.

6.  Slide your finger down the hair shaft but stopping and holding at the end.

7. Bend it and skip the hair like you would with a skipping rope, in the same direction as the twist.

Note: If your hair is naturally straight, wavy or doesn't hold he ringlet in place, you will want to use a bobby pin and pin each newly formed finger ringlet to your scalp to air dry.

8.  Allow hair to air dry or sit under a hood dryer set on a cool or slow speed.

9,  Once hair is completely dry unpin each ringlet one at a time.  Bend over at the waist and gently tousle strands.  Use fingers to arrange ringlets.

Summary

This technique is very versatile.  It can be to create any natural textured hairstyles for any hair event.

When it comes to natural hairstyles always select a hairstyle you're comfortable with and honors your natural hair texture.   Always be creative and select styles which emphasize the hair's natural texture and movement.
