Aromatherapy For Treatment Of Dandruff

Christine Wildwood is a fabulous aromatherapist I discovered in England in 1991.  Her book Aromatherapy Massage With Essential Oils have some interesting recipes which work for a variety of scalp and hair challenges.

Will they work for everyone?  Probably not just as there is no guarantee that any official prescription medication will work for everyone.

With that said I have tried many of Christine's recipes and there are two which offer a great all natural remedy for those suffering from dandruff or scaly scalps.  I  have listed these two recipes below.

If you decided to try them be sure to only use authentic natural oils and avoid the synthetic versions.  This is a key factor to consider.

Both of the recipes below include lavender which has the remarkable ability to stimulate the regeneration of skin cells which makes it wonderful for scalp conditions such as dandruff, scales or similar.

If you are unfamiliar with aromatherapy be sure to do your homework before experimenting with the recipes listed below:

Hair Oil For Dandruff

Will they work for everyone?  Probably not.  Just as there is no guarantee that official prescription medications will work for everyone, there's no guarantee aromatherapy will work for everyone.

Gather the following ingredients:

4-6 tablespoons of organic extra virgin olive oil base oil (if you prefer a lighter base experiment with sweet almond or sesame oil)

10 drops of rosemary essential oil

10 drops of lavender essential oil

5   drops of tea tree oil or juniper oil

Funnel the oil into a dark glass bottle, add the essential oil and shake well.

Apply to wet hair or else it will be difficult to remove from the hair.  Gently massage into the scalp so that it reaches the roots. Do not use your fingernails which can leave tiny scratches or tears in your scalp.  Use only the pads of your fingers and do not massage if you have rough skin or any irritation or sores on your scalp.

Leave in for 15-30 minutes.  Shampoo mixture out of your hair with lukewarm water.  Apply rinse-out conditioner from the tops of the ears down to the ends of the hair.  Use fingers or a hair-friendly smooth toothed comb to detangle.  Rinse well and finish with a cool/cold final rinse.  When possible air-dry hair.

Use as a weekly treatment.

Hair Tonic For Dandruff

This hair tonic is recommended for people with oily hair or oily dandruff.  This can be used instead of the Hair Oil above.

The dandruff hair tonic does not need to be massaged into wet hair.  If used regularly the tonic will improve the condition of your hair and scalp.  Cider vinegar is included in all the recipes to restore acid/alkali base to the scalp. All tonics need to be shaken to dispense the essences which are only partially soluble in water.

1 1/2 cups of distilled water, orange flower water or rosewater

or 50/50 distilled water and witch hazel

3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

6 drops of lavender oil

6 drops of rosemary oil

3   drops of juniper or tea tree oil

Funnel the distilled water and cider vinegar into a dark glass bottle, add the essences and shake well.

Allergic reactions

It's possible to be allergic to anything, even to the most innocuous products.  If you tend to be allergic to a lot of ingredients you either may wish to do a patch test on a small part of your skin, consult with your allergist or personal health care physician or select another form of treatment.

In Allure's 12/99 Makeover Of The Month the client went into the Hair salon as a blonde & came out a brunette minus 5 inches of hair. Beware...this can happen to anyone!
