Perez Hilton Tells Ellen He Doesn't Want To Be Perceived As A Bully

Ellen introduced Perez Hilton by saying "everyday millions of people go to our next guest's website to find out the latest celebrity gossip. I have never been one of them, but he asked us if he could be here today to make an announcement in light of all the bullying stories in the news.

Ellen Advised Against Having Perez On Her Show

Ellen told a very slender and fashionably dressed Perez "when you asked to be here I've got to say a lot of people said it wasn't a good idea and advised me against it and said 'why would you want to do it?', but I believe in giving people second chances."

Ellen continued "and you said you want to change and a lot of people don't believe you. But if you say you want to change, I think it take a big person to look at themselves and say 'I'm wrong and I want to change' so I want to listen to what."

Perez Hilton Wants To Be Part Of The Solution - Not The Problem

Perez said "yeah, you know, over the last week, week and a half, two weeks I've been doing everything I can to bring awareness to the issue of the teen suicides and gay bullying and in doing so a lot of people have called me a hypocrite and a bully myself, a big one, and that's now how I want to be perceived. And that's now what I want to put out there to the world. And it was a big wake-up call that so many people saw me that way. Sooooo from now on I really want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Perez continued "I want to be the change I see in others. So I'm going to do things differently on my website than I have in the past. I'm not going to call people nasty nicknames. I'm not going to go the mean route. I'm going to force myself to try and be funnier or smarter. Just do things differently. Not doodle inappropriate things. Not out people which I've done all those things in the past."

Why Was Perez Shocked That He Was Perceived As A Bully?

Ellen got very serious and said to Perez "how did you not...why was it such a shock to you. Didn't you know that you were doing things that were hurtful to others? I mean I know, because when I came out I was the punchline on everybody. I was the joke. And I know what it feels like. So when you see a magazine or see somebody and everybody thinks that's funny, but there's somebody on the other end of that and I was that person for a long time. So I know what it feels like."

Perez nodded " yeah" Ellen asked "how do you not look at that and think 'someone's getting hurt?"

Perez Justified His Actions And Made Up Excuses For His Actions

Perez "I kept justifying my actions to myself. I kept saying 'these are celebrities, they signed up for this. They're adults. They know it's expected' and it's not me doing these things, it's a character. So I would make up all these excuses to make it better for myself. But I don't want to have to keep justifying what I do anymore. I was twenty six when I started my website and I'm going to be thirty three now and I've grown and evolved as a person. And I think it's time for my website to grow and evolve and change as well."

Ellen "but did you see, and I know a lot of people use that as an excuse, we're grown-ups and we're celebrities and we signed up for it but also I'm an adult. But when you do that and we put that out there into the consciousness people look at that and kids look at that and go 'well adults think it's funny to make fun of other people why can't we make fun of other people if adults do it."

Perez Wants To Speak Out On Gay Bullying

Perez "absolutely. And I own that. And I don't want to keep sending that message out there. I want to be able to continue to speak out on the gay bullying and the teen suicides and I want to be able to go to the rallies and the marches as I have in the past and not have people in my own community feel ashamed about me. Or embarrassed."

He continued "you know, I have, I've already started to do things differently and it was scary and it wasn't easy but I feel like it's the right thing to do for myself and for the world."

Ellen "and really for the world. Because people, I think, in the media have a responsibility to put things out that are positive and messages for everybody."

Is Sassy Another Word For Mean?

Perez "I agree. I still want to be sassy and critical. But I can do it without having to be mean or nasty." Ellen called Perez out on the word "sassy". She said "when you say sassy, that could be an adjective for being mean."

Perez said "no. I'm not going to lobotomize myself but I'm making a concerted effort to do things differently. I'm doing everything I can and I think everybody should do everything they can, as well. And that's what I hope. I hope that inspires other people who have websites. Adults or kids, or anyone to take a look at themselves. To really not look at myself as a bully. I didn't. And when so many people say 'you were'.

Perez Is More Than Sorry

Ellen "you realize you were." Perez "now I do. Yeah and I'm more than sorry for that. And"

The talk show hostess said "I've never looked at your website. I knew what you were about and I've never looked at it. And today, to get ready for this interview I looked at it and there's a lot of meanness and you said it's completely stopped and you're not going to do that anymore. But when you say 'sassy' I worry about that. Cause it sounds like you're just going to use another way of being mean."

Perez disagreed vigorously and shook his head "nooooo. I mean, I have made a big choice to make a big difference and....."

Perez Doesn't Care About Losing Money

Ellen asked "and you're not worried about losing money? You're going to lose money."

Perez said "I've been thinking about this for awhile and this was the impetus for it all. It's definitely a concern. but I don't care. I'm not motivated by money. I'm very sincere."

Ellen Offers Perez Her Support For His New Website

Ellen said "good, and you seem like you are. I'm glad." Perez "thank you."

Ellen "so now we will be safely able to go to your website because I would like to support that you really are changing and it's just going to be entertainment and news and not mean. I would like to say we should give you a chance and support that. Because that's the kind of website that should be around and not mean spirited ones."
