Oprah And Lisa Ling Take Cameras Into China To Expose Beauty Treatments

I have to say I'm really going to hate when Oprah's show ends next year.  She has some of the most informative and interesting shows I have ever watched.

Today Oprah spent the first twenty minutes of her show about Global Beauty talking with Jessica Simpson who has been attacked about her weight and her own beauty in the media for years.  Oprah also chatted with Hollywood Hairstylist Ken Paves who accompanied Jessica and Cacee Cobb on a beauty tour which will be shown on the new reality TV show "The Price Of Beauty" which premieres on March 15th on VH1.

After chatting with Jessica and Ken, Oprah showed clips and interviews from journalist Lisa Ling in China.  Lisa was visiting China to uncover the new craze for plastic surgery.  One hospital had a dizzying array of operating rooms used for plastic surgery.  Lisa had the good fortune to chat with two women who were undergoing a very popular procedure to make their natural eye shape "more Western".

The cost of the surgery?  In China, $300.  In the United States, $3,000.

Another more controversial but popular surgery is the operation to extend a person's height by 1 1/2 to 2 inches or more.  Of course the surgery involves breaking the leg bones in half, inserting painful braces and then waiting for the gaps in the bones to fill in with new bone for the added height.

If it sounds painful, it is.  The cost in China?  Anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000.  Even more significant is the fact the person who undergoes the surgery, which is becoming more and more popular,  is basically out of commission from 6 to 12 months.  As Lisa explained it, the people having the surgery are very secretive and go into seclusion from their friends and family since they do not want them to know they had the leg lengthening surgery.

Lisa also told Oprah that no one she talked to in China about the leg surgery would allow their faces to be shown but those who had the surgery basically said the pain of having the bones broken and the braces added for six to twelve months felt the agony was worth it to be taller.

Lisa also visited a Barbie Doll store in China where the little girls wanted to buy the blonde, blue-eyed Americanized dolls and did not like the Chinese versions of Barbie.

The report by Lisa Ling of how popular plastic surgery has become in China was compelling and fascinating.  Leave it to Oprah to uncover some interesting and controversial subjects.

Now the big question, would you have your legs broken to gain 1 1/2 to 2" of height?
