Rogaine For Women's Hair Loss?
Question
Dear Karen,
I have been diagnosed as having
hair thinning as a result of hormonal changes that I experienced
during menopause. What do you know about Rogaine? Once
my hair is thick after using the product can I stop using it or must
I use it for the rest of my life?
Shirley
Answer
Dear Shirley,
Although Rogaine, which is a drug,
does not work for every woman that takes it, the success rate for
treatment that is linked to hormonal hair loss is higher than for
other types of hair loss.
Rogaine also known as minoxidil works
best when used at the very first signs of thinning. The later
that the product is used the less success rate there is.
Once you start using Rogaine and
experience results, you will have to commit to using the product for
the rest of your life. If you stop using Rogaine at any point,
your hair will again thin and eventually your hair will return to
its original point before using the product. At that point any
gains you made with Rogaine will be lost.
Even more noteworthy is the fact that
studies have shown that people who use Rogaine, stop and then
restart, may not experience the same results as the first time they
used the treatment.
A common complaint with Rogaine which
is known as Regaine in European countries, is that it can make the
hair feel greasy or oily.
Since your doctor recommended
Rogaine, hopefully they explained some of the possible interactions
that the drug can cause.
The product, which is applied
directly to the scalp, should never be used if your scalp is raw,
sore, sun burnt, irritated or has any obvious scratches or bumps.
This is because the drug may be absorbed into your body via an
irritated scalp and could potentially cause some serious side
effects.
Rogaine should never be used, without
a doctor's consent, if certain medical conditions exist such as high
blood pressure, heart problems, liver or kidney problems or known
drug allergies or reactions.
It is also not advised for women who
are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning on becoming pregnant in the
near future.
Best wishes,
Karen

Using Wooden Combs In Wet Hair?
Question
Dear Karen,
I have heard conflicting opinions
about wooden combs and whether they are safe to use in hair.
Do they snag delicate strands?
Also, I have heard conflicting
opinions about whether it is safe to use wooden combs, hairsticks,
barrettes or any other wooden hair accessories in damp or wet hair.
Toni
Answer
Dear Toni,
The answer is yes and no to whether
wooden combs are safe for use on delicate hair. Wooden combs
are great for hair when they are carefully sanded to a very smooth
finish that will prevent them from catching on snagging tresses.
They are not safe if they are rough or unfinished.
When buying a wooden comb be sure to
run your fingers over the combs to make sure they are smooth.
If not, either don't buy the combs or sand them yourself to make
sure they are perfectly smooth.
Is it safe to use wooden combs,
sticks, forks and other hair accessories in wet or damp hair?
Again, this depends on the item in
question and how it is finished. Some wooden accessories are
finished with a light layer of lacquer which protects them from
potential water damage.
It is always a good idea to contact
the manufacturer or distributor of any wooden hair related products
if you are unsure of the best and safest ways to use them. Be sure
to inquire if using the products on wet or damp hair will cause them
to warp or stain over an extended period of time.
Best wishes,
Karen

Using Mei Fa Hairsticks In Wet Hair?
Question
Dear Karen,
I recently discovered the Mei Fa
hairsticks at HairBoutique.com. I couldn't decide which ones I
loved best so I bought several pair and am loving them.
I wondered if you knew if the Mei
Fa hairsticks could be used on wet or damp hair. I like to put
my hair in a damp bun and let it air dry and do not want to cause
any long term damage to my beautiful new hair toys.
Lauren
Answer
Dear Lauren,
I am so glad to hear you are enjoying
your Mei Fa hairsticks. I personally own many pair and feel
that they are some of the very best hairsticks available on the
market today.
It is always a good idea to contact
the manufacturer or distributor of any hair related products if you
are unsure of the best and safest ways to use them.
I have consulted with Mei Fa on your
question and they assure me that the Mei Fa hairsticks are safe when
worn with damp or wet tresses.
Happy wet bunning and enjoy your new
Mei Fa.
Best wishes,
Karen
