I really want spiral curls for my upcoming Wedding. I
asked my hairdresser to give me a spiral perm but she refused
saying my hair was damaged and would not hold a strong spiral
type of curl. She advised me to look at other options
for achieving the curls and waves that I want but I want the
quick and dirty way of getting the curls with a perm.
Should I go to another hairdresser or should I try other
methods such as hot rollers or other types of curling options?

Answer
Dear Felicity Wannabe,
Give your hairdresser a big hug and kiss. They probably
saved you from a spiral perm nightmare. If your
hairdresser advised you not to get a perm, which you would pay
her good money to apply, you know that she is being perfectly
honest with you and is trying to save you from potential long
range problems including a disappointing result, hair breakage
or other related damage.
Consult with your hairdresser on your options to create curls
and waves using wet sets, rag rollers left in overnight or using
a long finger diffuser or other tools.
Keep in mind that only certain types of hair can be
effectively spiral curled. Also remember that many people
with beautiful spiral curls were born with naturally curly hair
and can more easily achieve spirals with some styling.
I am sure with some planning and help from your hairdresser
you can create a spectacular wedding style that you will cherish
for many years to come.
Best wishes,
Karen
I really want spiral curls for my upcoming Winter formal but my
hairdresser told me the only way to achieve spiral curls is to
get a spiral perm. I really do not want a perm since I
only want the spiral curls for my formal dance. I asked my
hairdresser to help me create the spiral curls but she declined
saying that my hair would not hold the curls. I have
shoulder length hair that is medium in texture.
Do you have any suggestions of what might work in this
situation?
Lusting After Spirals
Answer
Dear Lusting,
Spiral curls can indeed by tricky. When hair is too
short, too long or too slippery, they just might not hold.
If you are only in need of spiral curls for a short period of
time you are right to try and create them only for the evening.
One guaranteed way to have spiral curls is to use add-on hair
pieces that are already curled in spirals. This is not
always the best option though since you would have to weave the
add-on curls into a pre-existing updo style.
If you want to take a run at creating your own spiral curls
from your own hair, you have plenty of time to practice creating
them. Don't wait, start now.
I would suggest that you ONLY consider creating spiral curls
on "day old" hair or hair that is aged between shampoos.
Generally speaking hair that is one or two days old from the
last shampoo will hold a set better because it has had time to
accumulate some oils.
I would also suggest that you use small to medium sized hot
rollers rather than a curling iron. Hot rollers can stay
in the hair longer and thus give you a chance to have a longer
lasting set. Keep in mind that the smaller the hot roller,
the tighter the curl. The larger the curler, the softer and
bigger the curl.
Conair and
Remington both make a variety of hot roller sets that would
do the trick for you. While you can try the
various jelly style rollers or
spiral rollers, to get really tight curls, I would suggest
that you first practice on
traditional hot rollers. Once you get the hang of
creating the spiral curls of your dreams, you can always
experiment with spiral style hot rollers.
To Create Spiral Curls With Hot
Rollers
When using hot hair rollers, first spray 100% bone dry hair
with a good setting spray or hairspray (one to try - Robert
Hallowell
Rawhold hairspray). Separate hair into equal sections
and then brush each individual section smooth before you roll
it. Spray the newly brushed section with hairspray or a
setting product and then twist the section in a counterclockwise
motion before you roll the strand on the curler. The
result of twisting your hair before you roll it on the roller is
that it will give your hair a spiral curled look. After
the hot rollers have cooled remove then gently and then pin the
newly created hair to your scalp with a bobby pin. After
you have removed all the curls and pinned them, spray your
entire head with a firm hold hairspray.
Let the last spray completely dry. Right before you
leave the house, remove the bobby pins.
It is important to remember NOT to brush or comb out the
spirals curls. Instead, turn your head upside down and run
your fingers carefully through your hair to fluff your spirals
slightly. Use your fingers to carefully sculpt them to
your own personal style.
For added shine apply a few drops of
Love That Shine Drops to the palms of your hands and then
carefully run through your new curls for fabulous shine and
natural protection.
Best wishes
Karen
