Question

Dear Karen,

I recently lost a lot of weight and am very happy with my new shape. I have a rather curvy shaped body with more of an hourglass shape. My reason for writing to you is that I have always worn my hair really big to offset my former large body. Now that I am at my goal weight I am thinking that my hair should reflect my body shape and that I need a new style. My hair is a little below shoulder length and in good condition. My face which used to be round is now oval.

If you have any ideas that might point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Thanks so much.

Emilia

Answer

Dear Emilia

Congratulations on your weight loss. That is terrific news. (Photo copyright Wella)

Yes, a new body shape definitely calls for a review of your current hairstyle. A new style does not have to be dramatic or involve a major change like a cut. However, you are right, a sleeker shape often calls for a sleeker do, in many cases.

Look at some of the curvy celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez for inspiration. Both women have classic hourglass figures and compliment their shapely bodies with sleek, soft hair lines. Both Jennifer and Jessica favor shoulder length or longer locks. This helps provide the look of a sleek long line. A soft cascade of small curls or waves over a shapely body is a fabulous look.

Since you have an newly formed oval face you have more options for your new look. Start your search for a new do by flipping through magazines and cutting out styles you like that are worn by models that have similar shapes to you. Then go see your favorite hairstylist for a consultation to discuss possible options. You might want to consider some face framing highlights to show off your pretty new look or to highlight your new body.

Remember, the more sleek and simple the hairstyle, the sexier it can be.

Best wishes,

Karen

Thin Body & Hair?

Question

Dear Karen,

I have a boyish stick figure and my hair is cut is a short blah bob. I want to look prettier or hotter. Can you make any suggestons? My face shape is more oval with a bit of square to it if that makes sense?

Thanks so much.

Cassie

Answer

Dear Cassie

Reinvent your bob for some hot new looks. Treat yourself to a superb new hair shaping session with your stylist. Explain that you want to experiment with some new looks for your Bob. The modified quiff or a ruffled bedhead is very hot in Europe as well as with some celebrities in the US.

If your hair is fine or thin be sure to start the quiff styling process with volume enhancing shampoo. Avoid using a heavy rinse-out or leave-in conditioner with your volume enhancing shampoo or the conditioner may make your hair too soft to ruffle well. If you must use a little conditioner opt for a good detangler that will add some conditioning benefits without too much softness. Consider using a root lift or volume enhancing product to give you maximum fullness.

To create a modified quiff apply a small amount of mousse to your damp, freshly washed strands and then use your fingers as your brush. Direct your blow dryer from the roots to the ends and "ruffle" your hair as you work. You can either leave your hair in a messy ruffled bedhead style or you can take a brush and lightly smooth the ruffled hair into a quiff style. This will give you instant heat for you style

You can also play with temporary or semi-permanent highlights or a combo of hues to also give you a fabulous new look.

Best wishes,

Karen
