Question - Keri Russell Curls
Dear Karen,
My favorite TV star is Felicity's Keri Russell. I have hair that
is naturally curly, just like hers. Do you know that products that she uses on her
hair to give it those big fat gorgeous curls?
Toni,
Answer
Dear Toni,
The beautiful and talented Keri is known for her signature
ringlets. I read an interview with the Felicity hairstylist and she confirmed that
there are not plans to style Keri's hair in any other style than the beautiful naturally
curly look that she sports.
Keri uses Bumble and Bumbles's avocado-jojoba oil-based Grooming Creme
(approximately $18.99) to create that great ringlet look.
The best way to use the B&B is to comb a little through your freshly
washed hair and let it dry naturally into its own ringlet formation.
You can get more details about the B&B by calling 800-728-6253.

Question - Perm Is Too Curly
Dear Karen,
Getting a perm seemed like a good idea at the time but not I have
more curls than Minnie Driver. HELP. Any ideas how to make it less curly?
Brandy
Answer
Dear Brandy,
You have several options. You can use a moisturizing shampoo and matching
rinse out conditioner that will soften your hair and loosen your curls.
ARTec's Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner are great at adding moisture. You can
also try using a softening leave in conditioner. Try Phytologie #9 or #7. Just
a small dab will do.
If your hair tends to be on the fine side, try combing in a good styling gel and then
rolling your hair in large rollers to smooth out the curls.
A good tip to remember, cold air enhances curls while warm air makes curl soften.
The last thing you would want to do is use a blow dryer with a cold air setting.
Best wishes,
Karen
Question - Philip B Hair Rejunenator
Dear Karen,
Can you tell me anything about a special hair care product by
someone named Philip B that is supposed to work miracles on dry and brittle hair.
Where do I purchase this product?
Cynthia
Answer
Dear Cynthia,
Philip B is a high profile hair stylist who has created his own
special hair rejuvenator product.
The product can be purchased directly from Philip B's shop for
approximately $26 (USD + applicable shipping & sales tax) by calling 800-643-5556.
I have not personally used Philip's product but Courtney Love and Paula
Abdul swear by it, as do many of his high profile hair clients.
From what I have read and heard, Philip's product is designed for very
dry and brittle locks. It is a multi-oil blend that includes various mixtures of
fatty oils such as almond, sesame along with essential oils such as lavender, ylang ylang
and tea tree.
Philip B's oil is designed to nourish hair that is damaged. The
product comes in a little brown glass bottle that is created to protect the oils from
spoiling.
The oil is applied with a little dropper.
Question - Celebrity Hair Products
Dear Karen,
I really enjoy reading about what different celebrities use in
their hair because they HAVE to look good for the public. I know that most
celebrities have access to celebrity stylists, but I imagine that stars and models still
have to care for their own hair from time to time.
I recently read an article about Claire Forlani, the beautiful actress
who appeared in Meet Joe Black. She has been photographed with a reddish hair color
as well as a blonde. Do you know what products that she uses on her hair or who does
her colors?
Please keep those celebrity tips coming. I love them.
Courtney
Answer
Dear Courtney,
I know for a fact that the beautiful actress uses Aveda's
Curressence in her hair. That is one of my favorites and so I paid attention when I
read a recent interview with her in August 1999 Style Magazine.
Claire also said that she alternates between the Curressence, which is a
fabulous conditioner for dry or colored hair, and Joico's Altima Protective Conditioner.
You may have seen photos of Claire as a blonde for promos for her next
movie which is Mystery Men. For that movie Claire had to have her hair dyed blonde
for the part that she played.
A lot of actresses have their hair colored a lot for various movie roles
and this tends to take a toll on hair. Claire admits that she uses the Curressence
and the Altima because her hair has been over processed.
According to the Style interview Claire has her hair colored by Debbie
Cochran at Umberto.
Best wishes,
Karen

Question - Hair Perfumes
Dear Karen,
I read somewhere that some companies now make "hair perfumes" or special scents that you apply directly
to the hair. Have you heard of this and if so, where can I buy them?
Also, why do I need a special perfume for my hair, why don't I just use
my regular perfume on my hair instead?
Melanie
Answer
Dear Melanie,
Yes, several different companies have recently announced
"hair scent-sations". Chanel has the Allure Tender
Hair Mist ($25) that is available in many of the Nordstrom stores (800-723-2889) or
you can try Escada's version which is Ley Perfumed Holding Hairspray
($30) that is available at Saks (800-347-9177).
The new hair perfumes are designed to match or at least blend well with
your everyday scent. They also include special ingredients to offer the hair more
manageability, shine and body. The new hair perfumes include, but are not limited to
ingredients like panthenol, vitamin E and silicone.
With all the heavily scented hair care products on the market there can
be a serious scent conflict between your hair shampoo, hair gel, hairspray and perfume.
The new hair perfumes are designed to blend with all your other scents.
Why not just use a regular perfume on your hair?
Regular perfumes contain alchol which is not considered good for most
hair. It is never advisable to apply perfume directly to your hair.
If you do feel the need to use your regular perfume, spray a very fine
mist into the air and quickly shake your hair through the mist. It is never
advisable to apply perfume directly to your hair or your scalp.
Many hair care industry watchers expect other manufacturers to jump on
the hair perfume bandwagon and announce their own versions in the near future.
Question - Limp Hair Fix
Dear Karen,
I have a short layered cut that looks a lot like Meg Ryan's hair in
Addicted To Love but my hair is so limp that I can't seem to get the same look as my
stylist did. I called her and she said to find a good product that would be good for
thickening. Any suggestions would help so much.
Thank you very much,
Elizabeth
Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
Famous hairstylist Sally Hershberger styled Meg's hair for both
Addicted to Love and You've Got Mail.
While Meg's "bed head look" seems easy, looks are deceiving.
Hershberger has been quoted as saying that while Meg usually sports a similar cut, her
style is changed with an arsenal of mousses, gromming creams and thickening lotions.
As far as a thickening lotion, everyone raves about Kiehl's Hair
Thickening Lotion. Hershberger also recommends this product and has used it on Meg's
hair to give it thickness and volume.
Apply the Kiehl's to just the slightly damp hair root area right before
blow drying. Blow dry upside down or by picking up individual sections with your
fingers or a round brush.
You can buy Kiehl's
right on the Web or you can call them directly in New York. The original Kiehl's
is located in Manhatten.
