How Long Must My Hair Be For Hair Extensions?

Question

[caption id="attachment_277" align="alignleft" width="169" caption="Short Hair Style"]Short Hair Style

Karen, my hair is about 1 1/2" long now after losing it all to chemo.  I truly would love to get hair extensions for my daughter's birthday party which is coming up in the end of May.

Is it possible for me to get fusion hair extensions or would it be better to go with clip-in extensions?  Cost is not a concern at this point but i am worried that my hair may not be long enough for extensions.

Can you please make a recommendation of the best hair extensions to get.

Your reply would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Yolanda

Answer

Dear Yolanda,

At this point in your hair regrowth cycle it may not be long enough to support any type of hair extension system.  Both fusion style extensions (hot, cold, beads or similar) and clip-in extensions require enough base hair to secure the hair to the head.

Although there are exceptions to every rule most extension experts require a minimum of 6" of base hair length to successfully attach add-on hair to the scalp.  Some can make due with a little less length, but it also depends on the texture of your hair and whether it has grown back straight or with texture.

When fusion extensions are applied to base hair which is too short (less than 6") there is the danger that it will not be able to hold the add-on hair or that the fusion points or beads will show through the hair.

Clip-in extensions also require at least 6" of natural hair although in some cases more length is required for the clip-ins to be seamlessly integrated with your natural hair.

If you go with a cap style clip-in extension system your hair may not be long enough or thick to hold the snaps or if it does work there is danger of looking like you have a mullet.

My advice to you is to invest in a beautiful lace front wig that you have customized to your own head.

A lace front wig that is cut to fit your head and that consists of 100% human hair can look even better than extensions in some cases.  If the wig is of the highest quality of hair and lace front construction it can look just like natural hair.

If money is not a concern I would definitely suggest that you consult some wig specialists in your area and price a customized wig.   Lace front wigs are designed to be very lightweight and comfortable to wear.

I think at this point with your hair's natural length it might be the very best way to go to avoid being disappointed with the results.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
