Introduction
Hair brushing performed properly stimulates healthy
blood flow to the scalp nourishing the roots. It
also helps to remove dirt, dust and similar toxins from
the hair.
Proper brushing helps release sebum which helps keep the scalp
healthy and moisturized. It also helps to remove potentially damaging tangles
while adds a healthy shine.
While proper brushing can be helpful to the scalp and hair, it's
important to only use hairbrushes crafted of natural boar bristle
brushes.
While nylon or synthetic brushes are much less expensive they are
not as healthy or beneficial for hair as a all natural boar bristle
brush.
Natural bristles have tiny imbrications which naturally clean and
add luster to tresses. Nylon bristles are only recommended for
light hairstyling.
Hair Brushing Exceptions
Although brushing should always be a part of every
cleansing cycle or scalp treatment, the following
exceptions are important to follow.
Avoid brushing hair:
1. When hair is soaking wet or even damp.
2. Before the application of hair color including tints,
toners, highlights and/or lowlights,
3. Before chemical hair treatments such as relaxers,
strengtheners or related treatments.
4. When scalp is irritated or contains open sores, scratches
or scabs.
Never use a comb to loosen scales, scabs or sores from their
scalp.
Section Hair Before Brushing
Always section the hair in the following manner:
1. Part hair from the hairline to the nape of the neck down
the center.
2. Create a section about 1/2" off the center parting to the
crown of the head.
3. Hold this section of hair in the left hand between the
thumb and fingers.
How To Brush
Lay the brush (held in the right hand) with the
bristles pointed down on the hair close to the scalp.
Sweep the bristles the full length of the hair, rotating
the wrist slightly in the process. Do not over
brush or stroke hair too intensely.
After brushing the first section part the hair again
1/2"from the first parting. Continue sectioning hair and
brushing until the entire head has been covered.
If your hair is shoulder length or longer section
hair but brush from the bottom up.
Brush slowly and carefully to avoid ripping,
snagging or tearing hair. When you reach the top of the head,
use a smooth stroke all the way down.
Brushing Out Curls
A good hairstylist is a master of the art and technique of
combing and brushing the hair.
The creative skills of the stylist can only be realized what the
hair has been properly shaped and molded in order to produce and
attractive and fashionable hairstyle. Proper lines, ridges,
volume and indentations are brushed into the desired shape.
By applying good combing and brushing skills, the imaginative
hairstylist can artistically create almost any hairstyle desired.
Softness and evenness of hair flow are created by brushing,
smoothing and combing.
Cleaning Your Brushes
Brushes and combs need cleaning too. Try washing brushes once a
week.
How To Clean:
1. Start the cleaning process by first removing hair from the
bristles using another brush or a comb.
2. Once all the loose dust and hair is removed then fill a basin
with lukewarm water and a few drops of shampoo.
3. Swish the brush through the sudsy water.
4. Rinse well with lukewarm water.
5. Allow brush to air dry.
Other Brush Tips
Use a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden
handle to reduce hair static. If all else fails, run a dryer sheet
over your locks!
Never brush naturally curly hair since this can
break up the natural texture patterns.
For short hair a brush with soft
bristles works best. For medium and long hair use a
paddle brush for straight looks or a round brush to add
curves and volume.
When possible keep a
mini boar bristle brush available to pack in your suitcase or
handbag for a trip or special event.
Summary
Choosing and using the correct brush for your hair
type, texture, length and condition can make all the
difference for creating healthy tresses.
