Introduction

Jennifer Aniston
Wearing "The Rachel" Hairstyle

We can learn a lot about what the future brings for hair style trends by looking back into the past and examining popular hairstyles from days of old.

Just like in the world of fashion, hair cycles through different trends.  Truth be told, hair follows fashions.

Looking back almost ten years ago to 1997 it is interesting to note that the hot hair trends ranged from very sleek and simple to wild and incredibly wooly.

Fashion catwalk hair looks included heavily sculpted, dramatics do's, scraped-back simplicity, twin-textured crops, strong geometric cuts and disheveled romantic looks.

Fringes were worn in every style imaginable.

Supermodel (of that era) Claudia Schiffer was seen sporting a long fringe that accented her eyes on the catwalks and in her red carpet appearances.

A poll of hairstylists during 1997 netted the top five most requested hair styles from hair consumers in 1997:

  1. Meg Ryan's short tousled "just out of bed" style created by Celeb Stylist Sally Hershberger.
  2. Jennifer Aniston's original "Rachel" cut from Friends created by Celeb Stylist Chris McMillan.
  3. Liz Hurley's lush uneven sexy layers which created and uber sensuous style.
  4. Demi Moore/Sharon Stone's glossy short looks that were stunning yet sexy.
  5. Kim Basinger's original 9 1/2 Weeks long sexy blonde look that was pure bombshell blonde.

Another hairstyle that was very popular for 1997 was Kristen Scott Thomas' short cut. It was hot because it was considered very easy-to-maintain yet very fashionable.

For men, the most requested look in 1997 was George Clooney's textured short crop that he sports on the hit TV show, ER.

The hottest hair colors for 1997 were deep rich colors and included deep claret reds, rich purple infused blueberry and blackberry along with creamy caramels.  These rich hues were specifically designed to work with the sleek hairstyles that were popular at the time.
